my kitten always goes straight for the pins too. Luckily for me he likes the big ones with the shiny beads on top so damage to the lace isn't usually too bad, I just worry about him swallowing them!! Re: [lace] sympathy needed
Nancy You have my sympathy as I have had upended pillows a couple of times now - once the cats were at fault (they knocked over the whole table p laying a wild game of chase around the house) and once it was the fault of my cleaner's sister-in-law, who came to help her. But I would like to thank you for making me laugh in the way you  told the story. Lorelei, I too meet up with the cat in the closet syndrome - more or less any closet works for that game! And sometimes the silly animals get completely shut in. The best story was probably the previous cat, Astrophe, who loved ladders. We have recessed lighting in three tiers in our hallway, and had an electrician in to repair one set. Some hours after he left we heard miaowing from the hall, and found her looking down at us from abou t 12 feet up! Thanks Alex! The Greek Gods piece is stunning. I like the banner you have across the top of your pages too--is it in one of your books? What a great website. Hi Alex Just had a look at your books in the pipeline. I hope you will keep us all up-to-date when they will be published, as I am sure that alongside myself, quite a few ill be interested in them. [lace] Sympathy needed
Sorry about your lace, Nancy, - but the piece is lovely - as shown on your blog. Well done. I hope you get it all untangled successfully. We had a budgie, in years gone by, that loved to play with the pins on the pillow and pull them out. unfortunately, he always went to the front pins, not the ones at the back, where removal would not have mattered much!! Grrr! I spangle with fishing line, and a dab of glue on the knot, - and he loved to pick at the knots, too - or the dried glue!! Picking up a bobbin and dropping it down in another place was a favourite game of his, so he was trying to help me make lace - which was not appreciated!!! [lace] sympathy needed
One of my ferrets (they both still live because I don't know which one) climbed up my stack of lace pillows last night to the one I've been working on. Ferrets like to dig, and they like things that rustle, click, or otherwise make noise. Image the little beast's delight when s/he discovered that, when s/he dug at bobbins either in or out of holders, said bobbins made an interesting noise. All my bobbins are in disarray, tangled, dragged out of their holders, and otherwise in a jumble. The only blessings are that so far I have found no broken threads, and there's no damage to the finished lace. And oh yes, the kind of lace is old valenciennes/binche, so there's no particular pattern to what the last stitch anywhere should be (see picture at the link below) and I'm reconstructing by both un-tangling and un-lacing until I can recognize where I am from my shadow pillow (the working diagram on ethafoam with pins to mark my place). This is all without mentioning ferret hair on the pillow... Anyone who has had a pillow dumped by a cat will appreciate the situation! A picture of the lace at a much earlier stage: http://laceioli.ning.com/photo/from-kobe?context=user (if it doesn't go straight to the right picture, it's the one on the red pricking card.) You have my deepest sympathy, Nancy. That's why I have a large dog - does not climb on anything. Watch out, Agnes. Our Newfoundland, Sirius, (after Harry Potter's Sirius Black) wags her tail, and if she's in the right place, the bobbins move. And since the pillow with the altar cloth is right by the sliding glass doors in the kitchen, where Sirius will go in and out, I'm sure some day she'll bump into it a little too much when I've forgotten to move it to a safer place, and bum. Fortunately it's 40/2 linen, so breakage is minimal. It's ok as long as I move it closer to the kitchen table where it is somewhat braced, but nothing is perfect. And then there's the long black hair in the fine Flanders and Valenciennes lace reverse tweezers work well there. I am quite disciplined: when I stop my lacemaking, I always lift the pillow off the stand and onto the table in my craft room. Agnes Watch out, Agnes. [lace] sympathy needed
Nancy: my commiserations. One of my cats did that once. I got home from work and found my pillow with spangled bobbins upside down on the floor, 2 broken bobbins. One was my only bone one. Time elapsed from the disaster meant both cats were puzzled about why I was yelling and waving my arms around. Looking innocent. It took me 2 hours to untangle the mess and make knots in the 3 broken threads. Then I had a guy I met at a craft show build me a pillow cupboard large enough to hold them all safe from the cats. But with ferrets, you might need a pillow cupboard with a combination lock on it to keep everything safe overnight. The cupboard hasn't entirely solved my problem, because when I open it my cat makes a beeline for it and sneaks into a crevice between 2 pillows on one of the low shelves, looking all snug and happy. Then I have to fight with him and try to drag him out. I get him out and reach for the pillow I had to move to reach him. There is something soft and squishy at the back of the shelf. While I was reaching for the pillow he snuck back into the cupboard. At this point I start yelling with frustration. He usually gets the message that retreat is the better part of valor. Every time I open it I have to calculate where the cat is and how long it will take him to dash into it. I've sort of exchanged one problem for another. The whole time I'm trying to move faster than the cat I'm laughing because it is nearly impossible. Re: [lace] sympathy needed -cat deterrent
Hi Lorelei, You might try carrying a spray bottle of water - a quick squirt in the face should deter most cats. If plain water doesn't work, add a dash of white (distilled) vinegar (though I guess vinegar could be bad for the lace...) Or, you can leave little loops of masking tape (sticky side out) on the shelf between your pillows. We had a cat who liked to sit on the gas stove top, right above the old-fashioned pilot light. I worried that he might try to jump up there when a burner was on, so I put about 20 tape loops on the stove top, mostly along the edge and above the pilot light. He jumped up once, got tape stuck to his paws, jumped down and kept shaking his paws until the tape came off. He never jumped up on to the stove again.
