Hi Diane and fellow Arachnids,
I think that one or two twists on the edge of a half stitch or cloth stitch
section respectively, strengthens the edge and helps to keep its shape
better. I certainly teach my students to do use twists. We may put an extra
twist on a cloth stitch section's edge where we have to sew in to make a
fractionally larger hole. But your best bet is to try it out for yourself to
see which you like best.
Please, remember that in some areas cloth stitch can also be named; linen
stitch or even whole stitch). Similar alternative names can be used for
weavers (workers or leaders). It depends on where you are and how you
learned -or were taught- the terms. :-)

Subject: [lace] Twist around the pin?
I have been watching some youtube videos this morning of bobbin lace demos
and noticed that two different lacers do not make a twist at the start of
their row in cloth stitch. I don't know where I picked it up, but I always
make a twist with the worker after placing the pin and working back in the
other direction.
Do you? Is there a reason for or against the practice?
