Re: [lace] Working songs
Which lacemaker was it that posted a while back a video of her grandchildren learning bobbin lace while singing and dancing. The boy emulating a trumpet player was hilarious. That was me! Here is the link to this video of a wonderful afternoon I had with our two youngest grandchildren, some 6 years ago! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSMfRepZAB0 Anneke Reijs in Baexem in the South East of The Netherlands ann...@reijs.nl www.reijs.nl - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Agnes wrote: S, do they still make any lace? No, they don't! Alicia lives in Switserland, Daan in China and that makes it hard to work with them on a lace at a regular base. They are each 15 yrs old now and have a lot of other interests ! But they are still very interested in my lacemaking so perhaps one day... [lace] Working songs
Hi arachnids The lacemakers songs or 'tells' had a distinct use in that they encouraged faster work. Sea shanties were used to keep the seamen working together when rowing and hauling ropes, the lacemakers would move their bobbins to the rhythm and it would keep their speed constant. I'm sure events in the past sparked songs, the same as they do now. I'm not so sure that the song writers did it with the intension if preserving historical facts. Before the age of the written word it was an important means of preserving thoughts. After the facts could be written down that means became somewhat redundant. Re: [lace] Working songs
I have a romantic picture of the working songs of lacemakers, that as well as keeping the rhythm of work, the songs kept everyone awake and interested with gossipy themes and a thrilling if sometimes sad end; in today's terms, a combination of soap opera and urban myth. [lace] Working songs
I found it interesting that when my granddaughter had her first go at making lace (she made herself a bracelet on the day after her sixth birthday) once she got the hang of the half stitch, she naturally started singing as she worked, and I can quite imagine that with children starting to learn at this age and younger (some were only four and a half years old) it might have been just as natural to them to sing whilst they worked - also if they were singing they couldn't waste time chatting!
