[lace] IOLI Magazine - Arrived
Thanks for all the replies. It seems that delivery is very spotty and I was happy to find I was not alone in waiting for the Bulletin. Today my DH brought in the mail and tried to hide the fact that under the fliers was the magazine.  I was anxious because it seemed ages since the online version was available but can now do a happy dance. Looking forward to tomorrow and the start of the IOLI Uncon.  Getting up for 7:00 am might be hard though, and luckily, I don't think I have to worry in folks seeing me all bleary eyed as I do for my lace guild Zoom meetings held in Illinois. I got mine, in Canada. However, I would suggest that anyone who hasn't received theirs should contact The Lace Guild directly. They may decide that in view of the current situation, that they will want to wait another couple of weeks before sending replacements. [lace] the Magazine
Hooray, - some decent reading for later on!!! The IOLI Bulletin has just arrived, so mail is getting though, though slowly. With everything closed â including Libraries, - Lockdown has been rather boring!! Thank Goodness for our Lacemaking!!! At least we all would have had lots to do â and even, perhaps, finished a few UFOs. (shock! Horror! ð ) We lost our âState Branch of the Guildâ Librarian, early on in the Lock-down, and had to watch the funeral on the computer. It was SO sad to see her family â only 8 of them allowed, all sitting apart, due to regulations. They needed to be together and hugging and supporting each other. We will miss her a Lot. She will be a âhard at to followâ. She was always telling us to Finish what we were working on, so as a tribute to her, we decided we would each finish a UFO in her memory! I have found the discussion that Devon and others have been having on Lace IOLI Identification and History has been fascinating. Thank you for all the photos and information. Lace has such a complex, but wonderful, history, and I am so glad there are people who can delve into it, and write it up for people like me!! Very Many Thanks. Regards from Liz. L. Re: [lace] Lace magazine 172
November 3, 2018, 7:28 AM Yes, the e-version is now available online. Unfortunately 5 pages don't load fully. I've sent an e-mail to the Lace Guild asking if it can be fixed. I'm assuming this is a problem at their end, not mine, but I'm not really tech-savvy enough to know. Perhaps someone else who gets the e-version could take a look at pp. 28-33 and tell me if the bottom of the pages is missing for them too? [lace] Lace (magazine) - and use of magazines for research
When my Post Office burned to the ground on Feb. 21, 2017, the only mail I knew was lost were the end-of-January Lace magazine from England and a PieceWork magazine. Very rumpled sooty waterlogged copies were delivered to me. Certain magazines are so important to documentation of the present that my guest bedroom has 20th - 21st C. publications in bookcases and boxes that fill the room.  In this case, I went to a bookstore and replaced PieceWork, and then phoned The Lace Guild in England to order a replacement, plus calendars for the following year (gifts that are fun to give), and renewed membership. All in one call. So fun to speak with someone in the office.  The bonus for lace scholars who visit here is that they sleep in the library, surrounded by 4,000 + books that tell of the history of needlework in many nations since the beginning of researched time. It is a real celebration of the talents of unknown and known women. Guests probably have interesting dreams. At the least, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The librarian here has read all the books that are in English. Other languages are represented and shelved by nation instead of author name. Research goes much faster when you have her experience to draw on.   If you are a member of IOLI, there is a photo of my research library on page 33 in the Spring 2018 bulletin you just received. It is in the article by Jane Atkinson, of the U.K. What a surprise! Jane took pictures, but I did not know how she would use them. There are still many IOLI members who do not know about this library, because they are not subscribed to Arachne, so thanks for sharing, Jane.  NOTE: If you are receiving this in a round-about way because my AOL and Gmail and the Arachne server are not compatible and if you send me your Gmail address, I will add it to my bcc list, so you can receive posts directly from me. Please tell me a little about your lace connection when you write.  Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center  - In a message dated 4/26/2018 7:50:54 AM Eastern Standard Time, mous...@live.co.uk writes: Lace is due out at the end of April, Liz. Re: [lace] Lace magazine
Hello Jeri, I am a member of the Executive Committee of the Lace Guild. If anybody wants to contact the Exec Committee then holl...@laceguild.org is the best way to do it as your question might be best answered by one of our paid staff, somebody on the Museum's Committee or a member of Exec. I hope that when I have been promoting the Guild it has been helpful to the person I replied to (for example when somebody was looking for second hand books). The reason I asked people to let me know when they got their copy of Lace was because I didn't think Arachneans wanted to get loads of messages from people says 'Yes mine arrived on ' and it is easier to just hit [Reply] to my post than remember to send an email to holl...@laceguild.org. My email address is the one I use most and therefore the one I look at most often, I am not in the process of collecting addresses, I have enough clutter in my life already ;-) Clare - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] PieceWork Magazine - More Lace Fun - July/August 2014 Issue
Dear Arachne Members, May/June 2014 was PieceWork magazine's annual Lace issue, so imagine my surprise to receive the July/August 2014 issue and find mostly lace! (Wait a week for this to be delivered to book stores.) If you are far from North America and you are not a subscriber, _www.Pieceworkmagazine.com_ (http:// www.Pieceworkmagazine.com) will lead you to free projects and a way to order back issues plus this one. 1. On the cover are Irish crochet cuffs to make. Instructions accompany an article about an early 20th century linen duster (a coat worn over clothes to protect from dusty roads that were not paved at that time). The duster belonged to Edith Graham Mayo, wife of one of the founding brothers of the Mayo clinic in the state of Minnesota. It is interesting to see how the crochet collar and cuffs were appliqued to a satin lining, then attached to the duster. The author of this article is Mayo's great granddaughter, Laura Esther Ricketts. 2. Catherine of Aragon's influence on the development of blackwork embroidery on evenweave linen is told by Mary Polityka Bush. From a distance, this embroidery looks like black lace. Instructions for a project included. 3. A graceful lacy compass rose shawl to knit - instructions included, by Katrina King. 4. Giant Bobbins, Cords, and the Franciscans (of Malta). This is most interesting research from Angela Peel. Especially if you ever met a chunky bobbin you could not identify. The cords were made to hold closed the brothers' habits. Each cord has 3 knots, representing poverty, obedience, and chastity. Several antique cord stands (with holes in center top) are shown. The work was done standing, so the stands are tall. The technique is similar to Japanese kumihimo. No instructions given. 5. Honiton Lace - One of England's Loveliest Laces is a 6-page article co-authored by Jo Ann Eurell (IOLI) and Laurie Waters (Lace News). You will recognize that both correspond with us on Arachne. Instructions can be had in eBook format for a Honiton motif. See _www.interweavestore.com/a-taste-of-honiton_ (http://www.interweavestore.com/a-taste-of-honiton) 6. A Chain of Netting by Rita Bartholomew (Rita taught this technique to the New England Lace Group in 2013). A generous 9 1/2 pages are devoted to her Netting history and a bookmark project. _www.knotsindeed.com_ (http://www.knotsindeed.com) 7. The rarely-made Yap lace is featured in a 5-page article with instructions, by Bart Elwell (IOLI). Yap lace is a combination of crochet and needle lace. 8. Finally, a duo of knitting articles. A) Icelandic sweater, with instructions. B) A Shoal of Ganseys - The Knitting Legacy of the Fishing Community exhibition at Sheringham Museum, Norfolk, England, until September 10, 2014. Ganseys are sweaters worn by men while fishing. _www.sheringhammuseum.co.uk_ (http://www.sheringhammuseum.co.uk) One of the photos in magazine is of Herring Lasses Off Duty, knitting as they walk along, in period costume. This reminds of embroidered Panel 112 - Herring Girls, in The Great Tapestry of Scotland. [lace] Lace Guild Magazine - Christine Johnson
Dear Spiders, My Lace Guild magazine arrived yesterday and I was over the moon to see the pattern and working diagram of Christine Johnson's Medieval Garden and for which Christine was awarded the John Bull Trophy for 'lace by a lacemaker who is not a teacher'. I just had to write to thank Christine, who I think is a member of Arachne - she will not know me, I am generally a 'Lurker' but I felt compelled to write to Christine for being so generous in submitting this pattern to the magazine and the time spent originally working out a coloured diagram of the technical drawing. I first saw the photo of the finished lace on the back of issue Number 151 and just 'drooled' over it and wished it was a pattern available to us. Well my wish came true as here it is, looking absolutely beautiful again in the current issue. I have been floundering a bit for the past five or six months due to some sad family circumstances and doing a little bits on pieces already on the go but none of them seem to pull me in to get enthusiastic again. All I keep saying to my friends is that I need 'inspiring' but had no idea what to do, that is until I opened the Lace Magazine yesterday and Woo Hoo! I cannot possibly do any justice to your amazing piece Christine but you have spurred me on and at last I have found my 'get-up-and-go' and diving into my cupboard for a spare pillow, bobbins and thread!! I cannot wait to get started J I guess this is also giving advance warning to Jacquie Tinch, our lace tutor just what I will be turning up with in class - she is probably turning a nice shade of puce at the thought - only joking Jacquie, she relishes a challenge! That's it and all that is left is to say once again a huge thanks to Christine for unknowingly lifting my spirits. Re: [lace] Lace Guild Magazine - Christine Johnson
Christine is currently on a cruise and may not have email. She is on Arachne so she will get your message. In 'real life' Christine is a talented and generous lacemaker. She gave a wonderful presentation in February on the use of Gimps. The presentation was at a NSW Lace Day. She is going to give a lecture on her work on Tonder Lace at the NSW October Lace Day and in November will give us a 2 day workshop on gimps. She acts as 'mentor' to most of us at the Epping Lace group. I wish there were more people like her! As an aside, the NSW Lace Days this year are featuring our local lace researchers, we have had Barbara Ballantyne talking on Irish Crochet, Rosemary Shepherd on early laces. In June we will have Annette Meldrum talking on Boris lace followed by a workshop in August on Boris Lace, and Christine in October. We are blessed that some of the best researchers are locals! Anna in Sydney where winter has come! [lace] Lace Guild Magazine
Publication date for April's Lace is 30th April, ie yesterday, so given the occasional vagaries of the postal system I don't count it as late yet (others might disagree!). You should get it within the next day or so, but if you haven't received it by 10th May either email or phone The Hollies (contact details are on the website at www.laceguild.org ). What happens with the April magazine is that it has the renewal form in, so cannot be sent for printing until the members have decided the subscription rate for the new membership year, and with the AGM being in April it is a tight turn around for the printers and mailing house. (This meant having the renewal form ready before the AGM, so that if the recommended subscriptions were not passed it would only need a quick amendment before going to print, thankfully the new rates were approved!). You will also have the Trustees Report and Accounts Summary with this magazine, and a spare membership form (as with the renewal form, these form the centre inserts) to pass on to a friend - we need new members! On the back of both of these forms you will find direct debit forms - the new year will see a reduction in subscriptions for those in the UK paying by this method, but we need to have the applications back by 31st May so that they can be processed before the renewal date of 1st July. A copy of the membership application form is available on the website. Any reports on convention (we welcome submissions from members!) and the minutes of the AGM will be in the July issue - it would delay the April magazine far too much to attempt to include them then. [lace] Lace Magazine
My Lace Guild magazine arrived today but DH didn't tell me. I spotted the envelope after dinner and settled down for a read. Imagine my surprise when, on page 21 there is a photo of my needlelace effort for the Lace Street. I sent the photo I based the design on of my home along with a scan of the lace and Susan put a note in that it looks just like the real house. Then, on page 30 there is a design based on a Viking Stone from St. Martin's Church in Kirklevington which is the small village in Cleveland, UK that I moved from to the US. Imagine, there were lacemakers nearby and I knew nothing about them. I moved here in 1982 and didn't start making lace until 1993, Wow - 20 years ago!! Anyway, now that I know how to get my photos on Flickr, I have added one of the Lester piece after I cut the bobbins off. Looks like spaghetti lace. And, now that the house has appeared in the magazine, I added that one for you all to see in my gallery on Flickr. Thanks also again to Sue Babbs for the review of Lace8 which I have now got to work on my Macbook in VirtualBox. [lace] Lace magazine overseas packaging
Dear overseas Lace Guild members! As you know we had some issues with the mailings for the last membership year (now hopefully resolved) and we are pursuing this with the mailing house. I know this is a long shot, but if any of you still have the packaging from any of the last year's issues of Lace (April 2012 back to July 2011), would it be possible for you to scan it and send it to she...@laceguild.org If you can remember roughly when it arrived, that would be even better. The only person who I thought to ask to do this is Malvary when her April issue arrived, and it clearly shows no airmail markings but now there is some dispute as to whether they were all sent the same way (very probably as they mostly took a long time to arrive) or whether hers is an anomaly that was sent surface mail by mistake. Here magazines are considered 3 class mail so it sits in a bin there is room on the planes. First class has priority. Once it gets to the destination it can go through customs and they sit there until customs clears them. I have mailed magazines to Brazil and it has taken 4 months to get there. I think I could of walked there faster. To mail a magazine first class for overseas is at least 3 times the cost of the subscription. I wish I could give you a good suggestion but I have none. Tracking a parcel going to a different country means you do the tracking on that country's postal website. I have had to explain the same thing to companies in the US when they say they won't ship to Canada, because they can't track it once it hits the border. Duh, I can, because I track it on the Canadian side, not the US sideWhen I ship something to the US that is trackable, I have to track it on the USPS website once it hits the border. Now that most mail services have websites, makes it a lot easier to track stuff. Hi Malvary and Arachnids, You are very welcome to it as we are about to grow gills. It is raining yet again. We had drought conditions and a hosepipe ban (which was only lifted on 1st July in my area) earlier this year, so I am sure your turn will come. However, the rain gives us a good reason to make lace instead of doing the garden ;-) So there is some sunshine despite the rain. Malvery, I begged the same thing last week as our fires are getting worse. Pretty soon the Rockies will have no trees or vegetation left!! The smoke has finally abated somewhat, but it has been very difficult for the people who live in the areas where the fires are the worst the firefighters have had a very difficult time. The worst part is that not only is nature causing The fires both here in Wyoming and Colorado, but people are causing them too!! In Fuernsey, Wyoming near the very famous Orwfon Trail site Signature Rock were the pioneers craned their names dates of passing through, the fire is supposed to have been started by humans!! So, we are also praying England will share their rain - BUT no more lightening!! Sue, Please accept the Guild's apologies for the long delay, and thank you for your patience. We suspect that the overseas magazines were sent out surface mail by the mailing house (which should not have happened), and they may not have been processed as quickly as we would have liked before posting - as you quite rightly say they should have been posted at the end of April. Certainly items can still be sent from the UK by surface mail, which tends to take around six to eight weeks. We discussed possible solutions to this problem at our Exec meeting last weekend and hopefully you will receive your magazines a lot faster from now on - the first issue of the new membership year is due out at the end of this month, and we are well aware that there may be some late renewals!. If any other overseas members of The Lace Guild have not received their April magazine (which had the renewal slip sent with it) yet, can they contact the Hollies, please? Last week when I attended the Palm Beach Fine Craft Show, I was discussing the womensjourneysinfiber with another member of South Florida Fiber Guild when she let out a whoop! [lace] Spring magazine reading
Our spiders have been very quiet, so I'm sending a long article to inspire. In the major book store chain here in the U.S., the magazine racks are situated near the in-store cafe. Reading the magazines that are for sale is encouraged. Magazines are also available for free reading in public libraries, though probably not the British ones. Below are some I just found at BN. The American magazine Sew Beautiful Anniversary Issue - 25 years of Spectacular Sewing! My library has every issue of this magazine, which features beautiful sewing techniques (hand and machine) often featuring lace. This edition has the most popular garments of the last 25 years, for christenings, small children of both sexes, girls, and women (wonderful for inspiration). Toward the back are some technique articles on sewing lace-to-lace, lace to fabric, lace to entredeux, puffing, gathered fabric to entredeux, shaped lace, plus some designs and templates. 130 pages for $10, and worth every penny. The American magazine Victoria - March/April. This is a life style magazine, with beautiful/romantic fashions, homes, gardens, recipes, etc. My library has every issue of this magazine. Do look at the cookies on page 35, which have had paper lace laid over them, and then were sprinkled with confectioner's sugar. Nice refreshments for a lace guild meeting! Of special interest is an 8-page article about Ireland's linen and lace, starting on page 42. $5 The British magazine Mary Hickmott's New Stitches Issue 226 (my library has most issues). Has a chart for a 13th C. Norwegian stave church of blackwork embroidery - looks like black lace on linen, pages 24-29. For those who have been writing to us about the costuming in the Downton Abbey TV series, there is an article on pages 46-7. Some of the costumes were shown in Glasgow at a Creative Stitches Hobbycrafts Show earlier this month (pg. 9). The British magazine Stitch published by the British Embroiderers' Guild - February/March. There are 2 magazines from this EG. Embroidery is by subscription, and Stitch can be a subscription or found on magazine racks. This issue has an article called Mrs St Osyth Wood's Sampler Book, by Chris Berry (a neighbor of our Jean Leader) which is very interesting, especially the white pulled-thread sampler, with many lacy leaves - all different, pages 12-15. Pulled-thread work is a coarse version of Point de Dresden/Point de Saxe, which some go so far as to call lace (though it has a foundation of evenweave fabric). Our costumers must not miss the 4-page article about Monsieur Ollivier Henry, of Paris (pg. 50). How does he manage to create so many masterpieces? Perhaps by living in a 18th C. home without modern distractions! His focus on lavish period details is remarkable. All spiders - there are key names and titles in the above 4 magazine reviews. [lace] UK Lace Guild magazine
I have replied to Pene personally. There is a difference in the posting/delivery times for magazines sent abroad, so the fact that those of us in the UK have received ours might not help to see if there has been a hold up somewhere. I've asked Pene to keep me informed as I shall be at The Hollies later in the week - in the meantime, can any members in Australia, or other far flung places, confirm (off list, to me, might be better) whether they have received their magazines yet? I think what is happening now, with the new distributor, is that all of the magazines are being sent out at the same time, whereas before the overseas copies went out a few days earlier so that all were received around the same time. It can take 4 to 10 days to get from the UK to the old Zone 2 countries, so it may be that these magazines are still in the postal system somewhere. In return, can anyone else in the UK who ordered the French stamps let me know if they have received theirs yet - I'm wondering if there has been a delay in sending those out? In message 4eb50234.9040...@eggo.org, pene piip p...@eggo.org writes I'm just wondering if anyone has recently received their copy. I was informed that they were mailed out last week. Re: [lace] Lace magazine
I was one of the naughty members who forgot to renew! I saw Sue Dane last Sunday (7th August) and she asked if I'd received the full colour magazine? I hadn't, but the ladies who were demonstrating with her had. On Monday I phoned The Hollies, they confirmed that my subs were outstanding, a cheque went in the post that afternoon and the magazine arrived yesterday. RE: [lace] Piecework magazine/ Carrickmacross Lace
Hi Sherry I agree that the lace issue is worth having! BTW, The Wedding dress was not Carrickmacross lace, but the Carrickmacross technique of appliqué was used to transfer the machine made motifs in the lace to the tulle of the dress. Brenda posted this url last week which is a video clip of the making of the dress http://www.france24.com/en/20110514-fashion-Lace-Alexander-McQueen-Sarah-Bur ton-Wedding-Middleton Annette Meldrum, Wollongong Australia On Behalf Of Celtic Dream Weaver Subject: [lace] Piecework magazine/ Carrickmacross Lace I thought I would let you all know with the talk of the Royal Wedding dress (which I didn't think the lace looked like Carrickmacross to me) bring me to the May/June issue of Piecework magazine Years ago I took a lace class of Carrickmacross Lace with Mary Shields in Ithaca, N.Y. After that class Mary had said she would love to have a lace bobbin painted by me. In exchange she said she would design a Carrickmacross pattern for me that I could use to make a pin. Imagine my surprise when I got a pattern in the mail along with the material I needed to finish it along with fan sticks to frame my lace into and make a pin. [lace] Piecework magazine/ Carrickmacross Lace
I thought I would let you all know with the talk of the Royal Wedding dress (which I didn't think the lace looked like Carrickmacross to me) bring me to the May/June issue of Piecework magazine. I don't have a car and there was no place near me where I could go to the store and buy this issue of Piecework but once I found out there was an article about Carrickmacross lace I had to have it. So I ordered it from Interweave Press. I hate ordering magazines online for you have to pay for the postage which made that magazine cost me over $11.00. But I am glad I have it now. Years ago I took a lace class of Carrickmacross Lace with Mary Shields in Ithaca, N.Y. I am pretty sure it was the same year that the twin towers were hit because I remembered the worry about Mary flying in from Ireland in October and so soon after that awful day happened. Anyhoo...I remember that Mary had some beautiful examples of Carrickmarcross lace with her for all of use to see. The lace was so beautiful and Mary was so nice. I do believe that Marion Jones was also in my class. The Carrickmacross Lace was written by Mary and Marion both. There is also a beautiful corner hankerchief pattern in the magazine. Since seeing the article in the magazine it is making me think of making that pin. There is the letter S in the middle for my first name. As somebody has said lately and it has been in the news...and I am going to steal the expression...There is a fire in my belly . Ahh Lace so beautiful!! [lace] Piecework Magazine - annual lace issue
The annual lace issue of Piecework is going on the news stands soon. I haven't seen it yet, but it sounds as if most of the lace is knitted. There is also an article about the Alencon lace made for France's Empress Eugénie's trousseau. [lace] Lace magazine arrival story
Hi all It is quiet on the list and herewith a bit of chat. The 'Lace' magazine arrived at the PO box last week, but I didn't know except for a claim card. Of course I knew right away after presenting the claim card and seeing the piece of mail. It had a bulky bit in it, and the people who sort thought the better of trying to force it into the narrow mailbox (I have had to pry mail that was rolled tightly, out of it, ever since the powers-that-be decided to install smaller boxes to fit in more addresses...how efficient is that...). Now what was this bulky bit all about? It was at one end of the envelope, as if something had been tucked in to the magazine. All it was, was a crimp in the fold below the staple, that must have happened when the envelope was stuffed. It was so rigid that the envelope was thumb-thick at that point, and it 'crackled' - (as thick paper does) must have been of interest to the people-who-sort! I popped the bent bit back into place and it was a 'whole magazine' again. That and a stat holiday for Remembrance Day caused a bit of a delay in the mailing to this end. Since then, enjoyable read and visuals ;) (that's my story and I'm sticking to it) -- Bev in Shirley BC, near Sooke on beautiful Vancouver Island, west coast of Canada - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here.
