u r right about us needing to win to go through to next round. If we don't
Southampton will.

It's clear the U23s are being trained in the same way as seniors, playing out
from the back, and quick movement. maybe a little too much pfaffing around by
their 18yrd box.

Re: [LU] 2-1 UP

2019-01-26 Thread nat...@sky.com
Yes - these are the victories that get you promoted - very mediocre first half
and a goal down to a brilliant / lucky strike and then under the cosh for the
first 5 minutes or so of second half, then from nowhere a total mess up in
their box and Klich / defender gets it to trickle over the line. From then till
injury time there was only going to be one winner - at times it resembled the
old attack and defence game as we totally dominated. Roofe lost his bearings
but could have scored, Alioski should have scored, a few wayward shots and
total possession.
A nice run by Harrsion and a good lay off and Klich who has found his scoring
touch and jabbed home the winner
We had a bit of last minute panic not helped by Casilla going full Felix and
coming out for a corner and getting nowhere near it, he also got booked for
time wasting when he took miles too long but a few seconds less than their
keeper had on numerous occasions to take a goal kick.
A Norwich v Sheff U 2 2 draw puts us 3 pts ahead of second and 6 from auto
promotion so a massive 3 pts even if not fully deserved in some ways
Need to get James or the Wolves lad in for next week - Clarke not up to
starting every week just yet, and get the win v Norwich and things will be
looking very rosy indeed
It is all in our hands with the only 3 teams within 10pts of us all having to
visit (fortress?) Elland Road

Re: [LU] 2-1

2016-09-14 Thread - -
Yes, I was one of the alleged 19009 attendees...

It was a similar team but with a very different feel. Back 5 the same
as Saturday...and played pretty much the same as they did on Saturday.
The midfield was the difference - Bridcutt as the lynch pin protecting
the back 4 until he went off injured, Sakko and Dallas wide...and
intermittently very effective (at other times anonymous) O'Kane and
Hernandez tucked inside nearer to Bridcutt. And just Antonsson up
front. We were set up pass, on the ground, move and support - and for
the best part of the first half that is exactly what we did - if you
give some leeway for being a team low on confidence and not comfortable
   at home.

We pressed well when they had the ball - O'Kane in particular looked
useful, at least for 60 minutes or so. Sakko ran their left back
ragged...but too often chose to double back and try to beat him again.
B'burn quickly got to double/triple marking him at times. And we did
   have several shots on goal.

We lost our shape after Bridcutt went off early in the second half -
he'd been clattered towards the end of the first - and Phillips came
on. That cost us some of the energy and certainly some of the bite. Not
long after that Wood came on for the hard working Antonsson. And almost
immediately got gifted a goal - Sakko beat 2 or 3 coming down the
right, got to the dead ball line and then cut in before delivering a
low hard cross which came to Wood 4 yards out on his own at the back
post - he just had to let the ball bounce off him. We were saying that
Antonsson never once got a pass like that all game. But fair play, Wood
was where he needed to be.

We had another five minutes of pressure and it looked like a second was
imminent...then of course it didn't come...we sat back/were forced back
as B'burn upped their game...they were getting a lot of joy down our
right - Ayling isn't all that and his positional play can be suspect,
but he wasn't getting much cover from Sakko. Eventually a decent move
down that flank came across the edge of the box and one of their guys
let fly a similar goal to Town's on Saturday. Personally I think
Silvestri would have saved both. But then Green made and excellent
   double stop minutes later...

Mowatt came on midway through the half...which proved useful when we
got a free kick in the 85th minute out on the right wing 10 yards from
the deadball line. Swung in with reasonable pace, up went Bartley, in
   off the post 2-1.

It should have been 3. Sakko, on the half way, best one then two, slips
it inside to Hernandez AND KEEPS RUNNING...Hernandez returns it first
time round the back and Sakko is through on goal...coming in from the
right and he kept running and kept running and in the end almost ran
into the keeper before toe-poking wide. It was a lovely move, deserve a
   goal...and he fluffed it.

GREEN - not convinced - 2 very good saves at 1-1; clownish injury in
the first half, coming a long way out for a ball that was never his and
not getting it, but smacked heads with one of theirs - cue a long break
for treatment and a very sad bit of head bandaging.

AYLING - again, not convinced...one paced...sometimes out of
position...and often not that much of a bonus going forward. Made one
rash challenge which I described as the stupidest tackle by a full back
in a long time...immediately followed by an even worse one that got him
   a yellow

TAYLOR - whatever is ailing this lad needs sorting, he is a shadow...he
does not press forward as before and does not look like a threat going
   forward.

BARTLEY - solid - good goal

JANSSON - won absolutely everything in the air - which is just as well
cos they had about 8 corners

SACKO - hot and cold - when hot, too hot for B'burn - did really well
for the first goal and should have scored for himself at the death

DALLAS - as above with less of the dramatic contributions, but more
solid in terms of team work and cover with Taylor

BRIDCUTT - best player for 45 minutes - snuffed everything out, moved
the ball quickly, a few over ambitious longer passes (was missed when
   he went off)

O'KANE - good hard working performance - if he keeps up like this he'll
forma good partnership with Bridcutt and Hernandez

HERNANDEZ - a bit in and out - but when on it, really on it - several
really good passes almost went through...just not quite, except the one
   for Sacko at the end

ANTONSSON - like this guy, he's a grafter and has an eye for a
chance...just needs a couple of breaks is all

   subs

Phillips - I know he's home grown but I think he's a yard off the pace
and a definite second choice behind Bridcutt

Wood - came on, scored...what more can you ask

Mowatt - why do we end up with people like Harte and McPhail and
Mowatt...its odd. Nice free kick for the

A narrow home victory against a team at the bottom can hardly be considered a
turning point, but nonetheless a welcome victory.

It is obviously too early to say, but has Monk finally hit on a system which he
can work with?
4-2-3-1, becoming 4-1-4-1 to go for it a bit, with 4-4-2 up his sleeve for when
we are desperate for a goal.
Perhaps someone who was there can confirm or deny that last night was more
encouraging.

It sounds as though Green is not the long term answer in goal. We don't have a
lot of options in the back 4, but that is not the biggest problem IMO.
Finding the right partner for Bridcutt seems to be an issue, and he does have
about 6 to choose from there.
Sacko on one wing with Roofe or Dallas on the other.
Hernandez or Mowatt in the No 10 role.
Choice between Wood & Antonnson up front, with one replacing the other after an
hour or so, or joining him if need be.

There is probably even a place for Doukara in the squad as 3rd choice C Forward.

Our first headed league goal of the season. We are on a bit of a run now - need
to keep it going. Commentators seemed impressed with Bamba on his debut even
though we sounded very dodgy at corners as per usual. Silvestris kicking
sounded atrocious - no reason for it. Murphy started like the new Murph but
spent the last hour as the old annoymous Murphy.
Have to be happy with 3 points even if we do not fully deserve them in a game
that sounded awful for much of the second half. Morison really is the new Billy
Paynter in terms of his (non) goal scoring - two decent chances today that he
did not score from.
Need to see now if the rumours about Fraser Richardson are true and how / where
he will fit in, plus the new lad Ngoyi.
Good day though

Fraser Richardson - there's a blast from the past. Hope he's improved with age.

Our first headed league goal of the season. We are on a bit of a run now -
need to keep it going. Commentators seemed impressed with Bamba on his debut
even though we sounded very dodgy at corners as per usual. Silvestris kicking
sounded atrocious - no reason for it. Murphy started like the new Murph but
spent the last hour as the old annoymous Murphy.
Have to be happy with 3 points even if we do not fully deserve them in a game
that sounded awful for much of the second half. Morison really is the new
Billy Paynter in terms of his (non) goal scoring - two decent chances today
that he did not score from.
Need to see now if the rumours about Fraser Richardson are true and how /
where he will fit in, plus the new lad Ngoyi.
 Good day though

From what I've seen from Morrison I think he has the makings of a good striker
at this level. His two goals against Palace showed he has real ability. I think
his injuries have prevented him progressing. I would be optimistic that if he
keeps injury free he would be a decent front man for us this season.

Swindon B team apparently, however a win is a win and I am looking forward to
seeing the new Italian imports. It's something new, it's a gamble and there is
no Plan B but I'm looking forward to the new season.

It will be great to watch The Hock outwitting his peers. I see parallels
between the Hock and Haribo ( can't remember his name), both clueless to the
point of funny, although the amusement factor might wear off pretty soon. It's
going to be an interesting season.

2014-07-30 Thread rhys hodge
Did any of the players have any socks left after last night, if so they
obviously didn't put in a decent shift.

By heck we could get good at these post game comments by season end.

by the way it could be worse, we could be like West Ham. I went to Wellington
and watched them and the Barcodes play A league opposition on Saturday. West
Ham lost to both the Wellington Phoenix and Sydney FC, and were bloody awful
against Sydney. They are I suspect in for a very long season. However it could
be that when MC disposes of the Hock he can get Big Sam. I suspect he won't be
at West Ham much longer.

cheers

Rhys

I'm only moderately concerned:

- with the exception of McCormack we've kept the good players and binned out
the dross entirely (except maybe Kenny Warnock and i too hold some belief
that Morison may come good)

 - if we have a bad start it'll be short, Cellino will simply boot him out
after 3 or 4 games.

Re: [LU] 2 1 victory

2014-07-30 Thread Kevin Lewis (UK SBS)
As I work in Swindon, I though it might be nice to toddle along and see what
the team looked like.

The game itself was played as a typical friendly. Teams trying to knock the
ball about, no blood and thunder. Leeds dominated the first half, and had 4
real chances. Apart from the goal which was well worked by Byram, Bianchi
Doukara to give Morison an easy knock in. Doukara and Pearce both hit the
post, and Doukara dithered when presented with a chance from 6 yards, allowing
a half block. Swindon scored from their only real opportunity after poor
defending from a corner.

The 2nd half saw Doukara brought down by the Swindon keeper, and Austin score
emphatically from the spot. After that Swindon dominated possession.
Difficult to know how much was them playing OK, and how much was Leeds sitting
back. The Swindon fans I know said it is typical of Swindon to keep
possession, and not do a lot with it. Their only real chance came late on when
a deflected shot fell to someone coming in from their right. Instead of going
straight for goal, he tried to bring it down and end up chesting it back to
Taylor. Leeds couldn't have complained if Swindon had equalised, but were
probably worth a win on the basis of the first half

As for the team. No scores - just impressions.
Well it was 4-1-4-1 again with Morison wide on the left and Doukara up front.
Byram and Bianchi worked well down the right, but that threat subsided in the
2nd half when Gerardi came on for Byram. Gerardi did very little wrong, but
had no threat going forward.

Peace looked good defensively, and Wooton looked good on the ball, but not
quite so good as a pure defender. Warnock was just Warnock. Austin protected
the back 4 OK, but lost the ball too often and nobody seemed to cover for him
when he went forward. Murphy was tidy without being dominant, Tonge was OK in
the first half, but can't get forward quick enough to help out a lone forward.
Morison put in the proverbial shift, gave Doukara some sort of help in the box
and scored a goal. Although reasonably quick for a Centre Forward, for a
winger he is a bit pedestrian. If they are going to play 4-1-4-1 Doukara looks
to be the best option. He is quick, shows well and has good control. If he
scores a couple early in the season - who knows.

Apart from Doukara, the team lacks pace in every department, but the starting
11 last night could well be 1st choice at the start of the season. The squad
at least needs a proper winger, and it would be interesting to see what Bianchi
could do playing more central instead of Tonge.

Back to lurkdom
KOT.

2012-04-26 Thread Brendan McWilliams

H, i have to disagree slightly.

FCB and RM are both sides of the same coin: enormous, big histories, huge
support, devour the majority of the tv rights from La Liga making it evermore
uncompetitive and neither are true businesses - at least if we consider the
debt they carry.

I came to Spain as a neutral and in fact went to the Bernabeu 2 days after my
arrival in Madid for a cup match with an entirely open mind and without
prejudicenow several years later, the lesser of the two evils by any
measurement is FCB. RM are tedious beyond belief.

This week apart, this present FCB team and squad are the best I've seen at any
time and i'd like to know of what team has ever played with style in the modern
era. Their squad has been in large part developed from their youth teams and
surely that is the aim of all clubs?

RM on the other hand dominate EVERYTHING in Spain, you'll find more coverage
regarding them on the main news (i.e. equivalent of BBC1) than you'll find on
e.g. Syria, Afghanistan, you name it. Their fans are wildly disloyal and expect
Harlem Globetrotter levels of performance and see conspiracies everywhere when
a team has the temerity to put it up to them and shock horror beat them.

The atmosphere in both grounds is usually pitiful - but that's more due to
their being all seating - and if anything you'll find that in the Bernabeu the
fans will quite often start whistling or booing at half time if they have not
scored.

The common charge that RM were Franco's XI is not strictly true as other
teams won just as much domestically - although di Stefano mysteriously went to
Madrid and not Barcelona... - but it's a charge often levelled due to their
main competition at the time being Athletic Bilbao and FCB - both nationalist
strongholds.

Anyhow, i was disappointed that FCB were knocked out by Chelsea - a club that
is the anithesis of all that football should be about and whilst i wasn't
too disappointed last night when RM got knocked out, it's impossible to say
anything bad about Mou this year (poking his finger in the FCB coach apart):
great powerful football and CR7 is only a whisker behind Messi.

Mario Gomez will charge through Chelsea and Bayern should easily win it, plus
it's in their stadium.

Yeah, but no Leeds supporter can support Barcelona either. Whining sods,
always getting favour from the refs and UEFA. I will never forget how somehow
they managed to get FOUR MINUTES of injury time at Elland Road in a half when
the physios hadn't come on once (not to mention getting Gordon McQueen sent
off in 1975). And I can't stand how so many folks in the news media just fawn
over them, not to mention the way people all over the world who've never been
to Spain, let alone Catalonia, declare themselves Barcelona fans. Good
 riddance.

I agree about the atmosphere, both games I have seen (AC Milan and Ath Bilbao)
had good sized crowds (99k and 88k respectively) and even though folk were in
full voice it was very quiet, I was expecting it to be better, I presume that
the open bowl design with a lack of roof makes the difference.

The thing that surprised me most though was the lack of alcohol in the ground.

Re: [LU] 2-1

2012-04-26 Thread Neil Hackett

As a fan of the sport I enjoyed the drama of both of the games this week.

Having grown up outside of the UK I am not all that bothered about historical
grudges from the distant past, besdies ManU. I see where they are from, but
don't share them.

I was glad that Bayern won. First of all Ronaldo lost and that makes me happy.
Also, I really like how Bayern played. A complete team game; organized,
physical and solid without the ball yet constructive and positive with it. They
are going to tear Chelsea a new one and if England meet Germany this summer it
will be the same there.

They attack with the pace that Rich always refer to.

I agree about the atmosphere, both games I have seen (AC Milan and Ath
Bilbao) had good sized crowds (99k and 88k respectively) and even though folk
were in full voice it was very quiet, I was expecting it to be better, I
presume that the open bowl design with a lack of roof makes the difference.

The thing that surprised me most though was the lack of alcohol in the ground.

  consider the debt they carry.

I came to Spain as a neutral and in fact went to the Bernabeu 2 days after
my arrival in Madid for a cup match with an entirely open mind and without
prejudicenow several years later, the lesser of the two evils by any
measurement is FCB. RM are tedious beyond belief.

This week apart, this present FCB team and squad are the best I've seen at
any time and i'd like to know of what team has ever played with style in
the modern era. Their squad has been in large part developed from their
youth teams and surely that is the aim of all clubs?

RM on the other hand dominate EVERYTHING in Spain, you'll find more
coverage regarding them on the main news (i.e. equivalent of BBC1) than
you'll find on e.g. Syria, Afghanistan, you name it. Their fans are wildly
disloyal and expect Harlem Globetrotter levels of performance and see
conspiracies everywhere when a team has the temerity to put it up to them
  and shock horror beat them.

The atmosphere in both grounds is usually pitiful - but that's more due to
their being all seating - and if anything you'll find that in the Bernabeu
the fans will quite often start whistling or booing at half time if they
  have not scored.

The common charge that RM were Franco's XI is not strictly true as other
teams won just as much domestically - although di Stefano mysteriously went
to Madrid and not Barcelona... - but it's a charge often levelled due to
their main competition at the time being Athletic Bilbao and FCB - both
  nationalist strongholds.

Anyhow, i was disappointed that FCB were knocked out by Chelsea - a club
that is the anithesis of all that football should be about and whilst i
wasn't too disappointed last night when RM got knocked out, it's impossible
to say anything bad about Mou this year (poking his finger in the FCB coach
apart): great powerful football and CR7 is only a whisker behind Messi.

Mario Gomez will charge through Chelsea and Bayern should easily win it,
  plus it's in their stadium.

somehow they managed to get FOUR MINUTES of injury time at Elland Road in
a half when the physios hadn't come on once (not to mention getting Gordon

Unlike some people (Including 'the old' me!!) I love football and not just
(But still for my sins) LUFC. Hence I can happily watch another game and
appreciate it. I love the way Barca (And Arsenal) play 'The beautiful
game' BUT until those teams adopt a Plan B, and are able to change their
tactics when someone Parks the Bus in front of the goal (Defending is
also an art BTW), then they won't be TRULY great, like the 1970's Brazil
team, the late 70's Liverpool Team, Real Madrid of the 60's and dare I say
it, THEM in the 90's (That's me on some hit list then!).
But to counter this, I am really struggling with a number of aspects of
the modern game:

The Media - Just fawning, manipulative, objectionable, trouble causing twats.
The Money - Just too much, absolutely killing the game, alienating the
Professional game from the supporters (And reality!)
The Cheating - Ashley Young, three match ban for the dive against QPR,
followed by the next one, and the next ... see how long that continues
then!
A lack of support for the officials - With all the above combined, plus
the sheer athleticism of the players these days, expecting basically two
men per half, to be able to manage this without some 21st century
assistance is surely Luddite'ism (If there wer such a word). Until we
allow the men in charge to be able to (therefore) clamp down on the
cheating, be able to have eyes in the back of their heads (Full marks to a
linesamn last night for FINALLY getting involved and actually helping the
referee). Unless they get this, fewer and fewer people will be daft enough
to put their hands up and actually become a match official, and without
them ... no game!

P.s. Don't get me wrong mind you, when playing I was a referee's WORST

The highlight of the entire game for me had to be the moment during post match
interviews when Geoff Shreeves told Ivanovic that he wouldn't be playing in the
final. You could almost hear his heart rip in two. Priceless.

Personally, I think the wrong team went through.
Can't stand Chelsea, hate the way the media ejaculate over their every move,
hate the way they are run, John Terry is a wanker I wouldn't give him the steam
off my piss if he was freezing to death. Hate the way the tea lady puts the
milk in first.
Hate the way they play football, if any other club had played the way Chelsea
did last night they would have been slated for being negative.
Bollocks to the 10 man argument, Chelsea were as defensive when they played at
home with 11.

Whilst Barcelona seem to have only one dimension to their football, so what? So
do Leeds (if being shit can be classified as a dimension). I would put money on
Barcelona stringing more passes together in the second half last night than
Leeds have managed all season.
Whilst I support Leeds through thick and thin I know which style of football I
would rather pay to see.

Hopefully Madrid will get through tonight and stuff Chelsea in the final.

And breathe..

2012-04-25 Thread Jeremy Adams

I hate Chelsea as much as the next man, well maybe more since my brother's a
Chelsea fan ;-) However I have to say that they did what they needed to do,
nobody expected them to go out and try and outplay Barcelona that would have
been madness. Besides, even my brother admits he has no idea how they won the
first game and readily admits to being astonished that they drew the second
game considering the amount of efforts Barcelona had, how much would anyone
have bet on Messi missing a penalty. They were exceedingly lucky but that's
what makes football so interesting, the best teams don't always win (though
money is indeed making great inroads into making that statement a lie). At 2-0
down with ten men it looked game over for them but they didn't quit and their
effort was rewarded.
What Barcelona should have done was just shut up shop at 2-0 and not kept on
attacking the way they did. Top marks go to Barcelona players for being
gracious in defeat and shaking the Chelsea players hands.

Anyway, we're a million miles from that so I don't really give a tinkers cuss
either way who won last night, it's all about Saturday and finishing the season
with 3 points against Leicester and Beckford not scoring. Curious to know
who'll be playing with so many suspensions and injuries!

Yeah, I know. There's nothing worse than a team who develops all their own
players, fills the side with 11 players with perfect touch and vision, and
always always always pass the ball with intelligence. Why don't they just
get some rich criminal to bankroll them and go out and buy loads of prima
donnas like a proper team?

Depends what you mean by 'grew up' - he's been at Barcelona since he was 13.
Torres on the other hand was born in West London and has played for Chelsea
since he was five.
However, I don't actually care who they are playing, I can't fathom how any
Leeds fan can be rooting for Chelscum EVER.

Yeah, but no Leeds supporter can support Barcelona either. Whining sods, always
getting favour from the refs and UEFA. I will never forget how somehow they
managed to get FOUR MINUTES of injury time at Elland Road in a half when the
physios hadn't come on once (not to mention getting Gordon McQueen sent off in
1975). And I can't stand how so many folks in the news media just fawn over
them, not to mention the way people all over the world who've never been to
Spain, let alone Catalonia, declare themselves Barcelona fans. Good riddance.

Cheers!
