ANTaR SA (Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation, South Australia Inc) Please keep an eye out for the 45th Candle Light Walk to be held around Government House Adelaide in December 2003, which will mark the 80th Anniversary of a remarkable Ngarrindjeri petition to the Governor in December 1923. This petition was a heartfelt plea from the Ngarrindjeri mothers from Point McLeay for their stolen children. This was not the first time the Ngarrindjeri had drafted and presented a grievance petition to the Crown authorities. The first was in 1867 when the Ngarrindjeri gave the Prince of Wales a memorial which they asked be presented to Queen Victoria and which is now in the possession of the English Crown. The forthcoming eightieth (80th) anniversary of the unfulfilled Ngarrindjeri parents' call for recognition and respect for family values needs to be acknowledged as the enlightened and understandable quest for equal rights protection from South Australia that it is. The people of South Australia have a unique opportunity through the Governor of South Australia, Her Excellency Marjorie Jackson, to now establish a permanent partnership with the Ngarrindjeri people by re-enacting this 1923 petition presentation this December. To ensure your participation or attendance at the forthcoming re-enactment please ANTaR on 8227 0170 or [EMAIL PROTECTED] FAIR TRADE COFFEE Big developments with Fairtrade - a Fairtrade accreditation and labeling system has been introduced into Australia. tanks rolled through the Ardennes Forest and into Paris, Prescott Bush continued aiding the Nazis. As Allied forces fighting to defend France were forced literally into the sea at Dunkirk by the German Army, Prescott Bush continued aiding the Nazis. As German war planes rained bombs down on London, killing 50 thousand English men, women and children, Prescott Bush continued aiding the Nazis. As millions died at the hands of the most ruthless and violent organization the world has ever known, Prescott Bush continued aiding them. And of course, as Hitler and the Nazis planned and carried out the extermination of Europe's Jews, Prescott Bush was an eager and active partner. When did Bush stop? When we made him stop. In this case, George W. Bush won't have to worry about the US Government shutting him down. That's been taken care of -- he is the US Government. As debate rages back and forth across the Atlantic over the morality and acceptability of this assault against Iraq, it is interesting to note the German position. It was Germany who bought most completely into the war lie during the past century. It was the German people who, with their faith in country and leadership, and even their loyalty to the Fatherland, made possible the greatest nightmare the world has ever known. It is those same German people who stand today before Europe and the world in unflinching opposition to this latest world conquering force. How well do the German people know George W. Bush? Better than they want to. (Highly recommended.) Why hasn't this information shown up with any media? The people in this country should be aware of all this background on the Bush family. Remember, our country did not just change with 11 September, it has gone 180 degrees since this administration began. One cannot blame 8 years of the previous administration for all that is going wrong now. Even if one thinks of the typical cycles in the economy, we are now being controlled by a family with a sick background. God help us all! . . Until now, US nuclear policy (to use nuclear weapons as a last resort) has been based around the use of nuclear weapons as deterrents. A secret Nuclear Posture Review would expand the kinds of situations in which the US would be prepared to countenance the use of nuclear weapons by its military. The Review states that nuclear weapons could be used by the US in three types of situations: against targets able to withstand non-nuclear attack; in retaliation for attack with nuclear, biological or chemical weapons; or in the event of surprising military developments. The report also identifies seven countries against which the US would be prepared to use its nuclear armoury. Consistent with recent changes in foreign policy, this Nuclear Posture Review, if adopted, would see yet another sharp move towards increased US unilateralism. Refusal to participate in the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty; an announced intention to withdraw from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty; and commitment to the National Missile Defence system have all signalled a renewed unilateralist inclination in the US. These suggested changes to US policy on the use of nuclear weapons are provocative in the extreme and, if adopted, could only be regarded as irresponsible, says Mary Ziesak of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). If this review is adopted, the US would be giving itself carte blanche to use nuclear weapons even against nation states which possess only conventional weapons. Despite US denials, this new policy review would amount to nuclear weapons being regarded as conventional battlefield weapons. These are moves which would make the use of nuclear weapons more likely and could only result in increased international tensions. We need to be reducing political and military tensions not increasing them, says Ms Ziesak. This new nuclear posture would diminish the safety of all, including the safety of Australian citizens. At Pine Gap, Australia hosts a base which plays its part in the US nuclear war fighting strategy. There is ample room for a middle ranking power on the international stage such as Australia to stand up against these belligerent and provocative moves on the part of the US. WILPF believes that the Australian Government now needs to take a firm stand against the changes proposed in this policy review. Please circulate this email to any of your colleagues you think may be interested. --- ABOUT ART OF DISSENT--- At a time when so much in our lives is uncertain - both here and overseas, and the challenges our humanity faces are so immense, we think it is time to host a national arts symposium where the discourse is set exclusively in a social and cultural context; where economic considerations are suspended - if only briefly. We want to acknowledge the function of dissent as an essential ingredient in any democracy and especially crucial in the quest towards cultural democracy. We want to explore the arts=B9 connection with communities in all their diversity and with the prevailing social issues that face us all. Through all of human history artists have been at the forefront of social change, challenging as well as reflecting, contemporary realities. These days, with the impact of globalisation, massive technological change, and the consequent challenges these present to environmental and social sustainability, we need our artists more than ever to help chart a more humane future, and to help us build closer links with each other and with our planet. In recent years, discussion and debate within the arts industry has increasingly focussed on essentially structural, economic elements. Conferences in the sector examine the creation of arts product, develop strategies to penetrate new markets and advocate the role of artists as value-adders to corporate or government programs. The Art of Dissent will take a larger view. It will encourage a freer and more courageous debate about the role of the arts in society. We are delighted that two of the country's flagship arts festivals - both with a record of commitment to community works - have joined us in developing the Art of Dissent program. All we need now is for you to join us and offer your ideas. LL:PR: AUSTRALIAN COVER-UP OF TNI-PLANNED ATROCITIES IN ET
Campaign for an Independent East Timor (South Australia) Inc. (Affiliated to the International Federation for East Timor, the East Timor Relief Association, the Australian Coalition for a Free East Timor and the Free Timor Campaign) c/o Global Education Centre first floor 220 Victoria Square ADELAIDE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA 5000 MEDIA STATEMENT:THURSDAY 10 MAY 2001 for immediate use ALLEGED AUSTRALIAN COVER-UP OF TNI-PLANNED ATROCITIES IN TIMOR MUST BE INVESTIGATED The CIET (SA) Inc released the statement below through a spokesperson following the release of yesterday's allegations by Australian Army Captain Andrew Plunkett and Australian Federal Police Officer Wayne Sievers that Australian officials had covered up information about an Indonesian planned atrocity in the Maliana police station in September 1999. Information Officer, Andrew Alcock said: The Campaign for an Independent East Timor congratulates Andrew Plunkett and Wayne Sievers for having the courage to speak out about what they know regarding the Indonesian military (TNI) plans to instigate a massacre in Maliana if the East Timorese voted for independence in the August 1999 referendum. This latest allegation reinforces what human rights, solidarity and aid workers were saying from late 1998 that the TNI had a plan to step up its genocide and destruction through militias if East Timor seceded from Indonesia. Those who called on the Australian Government to cease all military cooperation with Indonesia because of early reports of the arming of militias were scorned and belittled by government leaders. Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, especially attacked such people as alarmists and preferred to blame rogue elements in the Indonesian military. A recent leak of a human rights report prepared for the Indonesian Government strongly suggests that the so-called rogue elements included many senior TNI officers ranging up to former defence minister General Wiranto. During a meeting with Mr Downer approximately 6 weeks before INTERFET forces went into East Timor, he told a CIET deputation that they were irresponsible for requesting that the Australian Government call on the UN to send peacekeepers. It appears that when he said this, Mr Downer had been advised of the security situation. The decision to give the TNI responsibility for maintaining the peace during the referendum after its 24 year history of genocide and human rights abuses was grossly irresponsible and led to the loss of at least another 2000 East Timorese lives and the forced removal of more than 200,000 across the border around that time. CIET notes that East Timor's independence is not fully assured and there is much death and destruction in other parts of the region due to the criminal actions of the TNI leadership [eg East Timor/West Timor border, West Papua, Maluku (the Moluccas), West Kalimantan (part of Indonesian Borneo), Aceh etc]. These activities are directed at bringing down the present Indonesian Government which is dedicated to democracy and respect for human rights, but has little or no support from the military. It is therefore impossible for President Wahid to take action against those generals accused of war crimes in East Timor, West Papua and Indonesia. We consider it disgraceful that western governments like the US, the UK, Canada and Australia have resumed military cooperation which gives tacit support to the destabilising actions of the TNI generals. Western leaders like US President George Bush Jr and Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer cause great problems for President Wahid and those Indonesians who work for peace, justice and democracy when they criticise them for the crimes of the TNI. The Campaign calls on the UN and member nations for the following actions to be undertaken to bring justice, peace and stability in the region: To support the call by John Dowd of the International Commission of Jurists to establish an international war crimes tribunal to try alleged TNI war criminals To stop all forms of military cooperation with the TNI To keep their promises of aid, money and equipment to help rebuild East Timor To cooperate with the Wahid Government and the Indonesian democracy movement to explore ways of freeing the East Timorese hostages in West Timor, restoring peace and stability in Indonesia and allowing the West Papuans to have a UN-supervised act of self determination (which avoids the mistakes made in East Timor) Further, it calls on the Australian Government to instigate a full inquiry into the role of its security and diplomatic services throughout the entire period of the illegal Indonesian occupation of East Timor and its involvement in West Papua. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING * BAN IMPORTS OF ASBESTOS * BAN ASBESTOS USE The International Day of Mourning is a day when ordinary working people recall lost work mates and can give solidarity to the grieving loved ones. This year, we remember large numbers of Australian workers who have suffered cancer because of contact with dusts or chemicals. In particular, we reflect on the fact that asbestos dust is the biggest killer of workers. The National Occupational Health Safety Commission (NOHSC) estimates that during the period 1987 - 2010, there will be 16,000 mesothelioma deaths and 40,000 deaths. While most of these deaths are due the mining, processing and widespread use of the material, there are now groups of other workers who are being affected. Mesothelioma is now appearing in the so-called "well controlled" industries such as friction part manufacture and repair. It is also a problem for domestic workers and those working in buildings which contain asbestos-containing materials. In July 2000, the World Trade Organisation supported the 1997 French ban on the importation of white asbestos (chrysotile). This is because, like other forms of asbestos, it causes asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. There have been bans on chrysotile in nine other European countries for much of the 1990s . They are: Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, Netherlands, Finland, Italy, Germany and the UK. These countries are complying with an EU directive that chrysotile will be banned by all EU member states by January 2005. Brazil and the Gulf States also intend to follow the EU lead. The Australian Government shows no inclination at this time to take similar action. Despite the great death toll caused by asbestos in this country, Australia currently imports 1500 tonnes of chrysotile for the manufacture of a million asbestos-containing products. The ACTU Executive carried a resolution in October 2000 expressing its belief that the continued import of chrysotile is a national disgrace. It stated that if this is not stopped, innocent workers, their families and the general public will be exposed to the killer dust. We should use the IDM 2001 to seek support from the wider community to pressure Workplace Relations Minister, Tony Abbott, to halt the im
