Linear rail or not?

2021-11-30 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
Hi guys,I am wanting some advise.Would someone be willing to start a new thread
explaining the do’s and don’ts of putting linear rails and bearings to support
the router carriage on both the x and y axis?I know the general gist but am
having trouble visualizing how the router is going to work after being raised
several inches higher than normal. My LOM is a 900.Thanks in advanceDenson

Thanks for the photos of your spindle drive. I’ll start looking for a large
pulley and motor. Your method appears less complicated than the one using a
motor drive and gears. I don’t need a Mercedes just something to spin the work
for sanding. Whatever I do it needs to be soon before we have a few nights in
South Louisiana when the temperature falls below freezing and I loose my garage
workshop to plant that have to be protected from freezing. Also I noted the
discussion about a live center tailstock. Do you have any problems with the
work spinning on the Legacy tailstock or do you have a live center.

I am unable to find it again - but I believe the other Group member that
sourced it was Joe Biuno - in New York. Have not heard from him in a

I remember the "catch" was that it was made and sold in something like 12'

That meant you had to find a source hat would cut it to the length you needed -

You might end up paying an extra "over-size" charge - on top of an already

Yes - and you are already doing that.  LoL!
A second approach - if you couldn't or didn't want to make a longer Y-axis
would be to just do it on the Y-axis - while putting the linear rails on top of
the X-axis rails.  This second way would cut your loss of depth of throw in
half.
Keep us posted as to how it turns out. 

How about mounting a piece of aluminum 90º angle stock to the outer faces of

extrusion and the other face extending outward on the upper side.   Then mount
the linear rails to the top of the 90º faces.
That should keep both the X and Y axis' down at a level close to the original

you are preserving the original max diameter for the turning stock.

Do you have any problems with the
work spinning on the Legacy tailstock or do you have a live center.

thanks Jeff, at least I don't feel so alone.
So these finds maybe we could look at splitting up the machine between the
two of us. I have
several needs so if you want to message me seperate and send me the links
I'd take a look.
I'm building a Hybrid and it requires many items on the lom X 2 because of
what I am doing to it.
So give that some thought. I have to head back out and run the laser for a
couple hours and glue
a door together for a customer so I'll be out for a while but sure would
like to find the parts.

I have a friend that actually restores really old stuff for equipment. I'
don't do a lot of old stuff, unless
it's' an old Oliver tractor lol

Re: Spindle drive

2021-11-30 Thread M.W.Foscue
Appears a concern is the sacrificing of depth of throw in the Z-axis.

Thinking a little outside of the box (Mill):
How about mounting a piece of aluminum 90º angle stock to the outer faces of
the X-axis and Y-axis rails - with one face of the 90º stock against the rail
extrusion and the other face extending outward on the upper side.   Then mount
the linear rails to the top of the 90º faces.
That should keep both the X and Y axis' down at a level close to the original
standoff.  By putting the angle stock to the outside of the X-axis extrusions,
you are preserving the original max diameter for the turning stock.

Just a thought - has anyone tried it?

Thanks for the photos of your spindle drive. I’ll start looking for a large
pulley and motor. Your method appears less complicated than the one using a
motor drive and gears. I don’t need a Mercedes just something to spin the work
for sanding. Whatever I do it needs to be soon before we have a few nights in
South Louisiana when the temperature falls below freezing and I loose my garage
workshop  to plant that have to be protected from freezing. Also I noted the
discussion about a live center tailstock. Do you have any problems with the
work spinning on the Legacy tailstock or do you have a live center.

Re: New member introduction

2021-11-30 Thread Jeff Richmond
Hi Tim,

I did reach out to Curt on the rotary table. Hopefully that will work out. I
have seen a couple of other ( longer than my 900 )legacy machines for sale on
Craigslist / Facebook Marketplace with accessories including one with a rotary
table (a 1000EX for $875 and a 1500EX for $1200 ) but they didn’t want to part
the accessories out separately and I don’t need another machine “yet”.

Regarding your legacy collection, I confess to the same addition though I stay
more local and until this point, it has been focused on various other
woodworking equipment. Possibly in the realm of “Tool Rescue, Restoration, and
Adoption” since it is far more involved than just buying a new tool and I can
never seem to part with them after. 路‍♂️

Lookout for used mills: I am always on the lookout for parts and

another (at least that what I have to keep telling myself) but in my

Thanks Tim,

I am happy for experience in any and all formats but a picture is worth a
thousand words and a video is worth a thousand pictures. It sure helps
knuckleheads like me peer through the fog. Lol

Thanks Curt for your reply as well.

Hi gentlemen,
Don’t know is this helps but I found acme 5/8-4 taps both left and right hand

I do have some short rails so support ideas to handle the extra length/weight

Hey Jeff, I actually made two angle iron brackets and used several  oval LOM

The Wood Chuck in the picture has one very important mod that was made by the
owner.  He took the 1 X 2 steel rail off the front and replaced it with a 2 X 2
That I am sure helped with a lot of the sway that would turn up in the big
bladed cuts.  The next model after the wood chuck was the Steely as we call
them.  They used square galvanized tubes to add strength.  I still use my
Woodchuck because I can do a lot more in the way of modifications when the
center points are raised and not trapped between rails.  I have done 15 foot

then we would not have had to re-invent the wheel. lol

Re: Spindle drive

2021-11-30 Thread Tim Ziegler
Mac you made a great point. I was actually just talking to Mike Pung about
that very subject.
It would be great to have a recipe to the details for that process. Also
just changing bearings.
I changed mine out on my 1200 a few months ago and yes it went fine
because of my past back
ground, diy ect but not everyone has that knowledge. Good call.
