Here's another one off that I built for one of our members.  He's
a shy guy so I posted this one a long time ago.  He built his own
rotary table from car parts and a drill.

The main feature is an index ring that allowed him to index the
table and lock it with an adjustable index pin. I made the wheel.

I laid out the hole pattern that he wanted. I don't remember the
details but you can see the hole pretty well in the picture. This
was a laser cut index wheel.
Here's the adjustable index.  On the right side you can see the
top of a bolt that is loosened and the spring loaded arm is moved
to the correct ring of indexes.

The large gear is off a flywheel from a car.  This thing was
built extremely well. The rotary table was connected to the
headstock with an adjustable arm with steering knuckles.

And finally, the only shot I have of the rotary table.

If you look closely, you can see a vacuum pump underneath the
rotary table.  He used that to vacuum clamp the items to the
rotary table.  The plastic blocks on the table were used for
  registration.

Well that's it for today folks.

Here's a little transition to gear talk.  I can make any gear that you
need.  I've attached a pdf of the possible pitches available.  I've made
gears from 10 teeth, all the way up to 135 teeth that needed a little
modification to fit the machine.  The 10 tooth is really small and I
feel not reliable and also need a slight modification to the machine. So
the ones I've listed are all possible.

Re: TK Made Items

2019-09-19 Thread Timothy Krause

Hello All,

Another little missing feature on the rotary table is a method to lock
it in place when making a straight cut.  There is excessive play in all
of the gear train. To solve this, I made this little lock for several
members.  A twist of the handle 180 degrees and the lock clamps on the
gear locking the table in place.  Release is opposite procedure.

The one problem that made this one limited in numbers was because the
rotary table ships with so many different heights. I had to make the
bottom part of the lock a custom height to an individuals rotary table.
Plus the location of the hole required to mount the lock needed a level
of precision that most wood workers cannot do.  So in the end I had our
members send me their tables to install the lock.

I also added the center holding option.  You can see that here.

https://ornamentalmills.com/tips/threaded_insert/rotary_table_threaded_insert.html

It's one of the most early modifications that I made.  I have one final
modification to the rotary table that could be seen on the post where I
showed the eccentric turning on the rotary table.  I use a single Kreg
mini t-track on my rotary tables.  It gives me several options for
clamping.  I'll post those later.

Re: TK Made Items

2019-09-19 Thread Timothy Krause
More rotary table tweaks I have made.  As mentioned in the last post,
the direct connection to of the rotary table to the spindle is how I use
my rotary table.  I do not use the crank handle provided that is used
inside the rails. So here's a link to an old page that shows what I did
and have sold the lovejoy connection to double locking collar adapter
all over the world.

http://artscopes.com/legacyornamentalmill/tools/rotary_table_mods/index.html

The first item has been made obsolete because of availability of zinc
couplers.  I can't find them anywhere.  The steel replacements are way
out of line for a simple adapter.

The O-ring solely for the purpose of holding the pieces together. It doesn't
protrude outside of the chucks. When using, I only lost a couple out of
hundreds. Some were lost to over tightening and the grain split. However it
might also have been the wood.  Hard to say for sure.PVC is a very grippy
plastic compared to other polymers. That is why I chose it. I thought of steel
and aluminium but I decided I wanted to use a sacrificial type of material. Of
course it's really nothing to a carbide bit to eat those up!Great question and

Re: TK Made Items

2019-09-18 Thread MWF
I realize you can determine the max diameter that will fit, starting out, on your Mill.  That is determined by the width between your rails.  Thinking about it -  that max will also be influenced by the finished "edge" you want.  If you want there to be a 1/2" or 3/4" edge vs having it taper down to essentially no edge - you will have different limitations.  Those "results" will drive the width and thickness of the stock you can mount on your respective Pilaster Mounts.  Tim sort of have the right idea for calculating it - on the drawings in his posting of:Subject: RE: TK Made Items

Hi Tim,Pretty cool!  For sure!  Thanks for sharing. You mentioned that the assembly is held together by the o-ring.  The unintended consequence of the feature is you are also benefiting from the slight amount of friction (grab) that the o-ring provides - helping to keep the block being secured from slipping.  Have you given thought to using two o-rings - each in a groove 1/3 down/up from the top/bottom?I'm going to have to label you "The Alexander Graham Bell of the LOM"!  Great work. Thanks again.Mac-Original Message-

2019-09-08 Thread Tim
After using the index ring on the rotary table for a while I learned that it’s
useful only for the odd degrees. A turn on the handle or ¼ turn is accurate
enough. I do also have a index wheel that mounts on the underside that engages
a pin that works extremely well for a control freak. Unfortunately, it’s
limited to the number of index plates you own.

If I were to buy another laser for engraving, I would find a guy that owns one
and use him to cut your parts. C02 lasers you see available for cheap die from
simply sitting around. The tubes are like a pop bottle, they loose their fiz
and you have to buy another one. So I think let the other guy spend his money.
Only problem is finding one that knows what they are doing.

TK Made Items

2019-09-08 Thread Tim

I’ve been asked by a lot of members in the group if I have a catalog of
everything I’ve ever made for the Legacy Mill. I don’t. So I’m starting a
topic of items that I’ve made and have long forgotten or still would make if
there is enough Interest. I’m going to post them slowly over the next few
weeks as I find them. There will be no specific order. So here it goes.

Taller Legs for model 900 2” extension, also made 3” and a 4” extension legs.
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/legacy-ornamental-mills/LukcjELgxvg/Owpgaq7DxeoJ

My QC Direction changer. After talking with Curt George about the idea of a
better direction changer I came up with this.

https://groups.google.com/d/msg/legacy-ornamental-mills/LHkNujx8wkc/eewTSJa8wNoJ

That Post shows my TK Reciprocator inspired by the Atkins reciprocator from an
antique machine. Mine has more travel and options. It needs to be updated.

http://www.artscopes.com/legacyornamentalmill/tools/waveattachment/waveattachment.html

where does the time go…

One of the easiest way to level you 900 bed was with my TK Bed Height
Adjustment Tool. Four plates with a specific hole pattern to enable close to
infinite adjustments My extended height legs shown already implemented a
similar hole pattern so the rods could still be used for leveling your bed.

http://www.artscopes.com/legacyornamentalmill/tools/bedheightadjustment/bedheightadjustment.html

An extended gear set that fills in some holes in the standard set of pitches.
The truth is I can cut gear from about the 16 tooth to 120. I don’t cut Legacy
gears that are available from the factory.

http://www.artscopes.com/legacyornamentalmill/tools/extra_legacy_gears/

I made some horizontal clamps using 80/20 and a shopfox clamp. They worked
like champs and cost less than the legacy versions and had a quicker setup.

http://www.artscopes.com/legacyornamentalmill/tools/horizontal_clamps/

Then I really started thinking to much about indexing. I made a couple pages
that some people have not seen.

http://www.artscopes.com/legacyornamentalmill/tools/index_system/

This is different than from crank handle indexing, that’s Mike Input.

Here’s another thing I made for my rotary table. I don’t like having the
handle in the inside of the machine so I made two versions, and sold the
second. It makes so much sense to just shim your rotary table and direct
connect to the spindle and therefore the crank. So Simple!

http://www.artscopes.com/legacyornamentalmill/tools/rotary_table_mods/

Making life even easier I sold and x and y lock system for the 900’s Simple
lock plates and knobs and a bracket and you can ditch your slipping shaft
collars on the acme screws. The nob on the y axis has been replaced with the 5
star comfort fit knob.

http://www.artscopes.com/legacyornamentalmill/tools/x_axis_lock/

So that’s the easy stuff that I have found. I’ll continue to show other items
as I dig into some old computers and flash drives. I hope this helps others.
