Re: [LegacyUG] Picture Center - Undo Set Preferred

2009-09-14 Thread Paula Ryburn
Bill,  Having just recently ustarted usig the Picture Gallery and pretty
intensively, I think I have a quicker answer for you.
Highlight the individual in the name list on the left.
You should then see all the photos/images attached to whichever events in the
Attached Pictures window center bottom.
Click on the Attached Pics tab on the right.
See the Set Preferred button?
Highlight the photos/image you want to be preferred and click on Set Preferred.
The * automatically moves from the gravestone picture to the one you want.
(provided you have another picture you want to use.)
Hope this helps.

I looked through the manual, but did not find a way to reset an image to not be
Preferred.  In other words, I have images of grave stones for people that I
don't want to include as their profile picture.  I also do not have a photo of
these people.  Does the program automatically assign at least one photo as
preferred?  I am in the process of moving a lot of tombstone photos from
Individual to my Grave category.  I just figured out how to do that and noticed
that a lot of these tombstones are set as the preferred image.

Yes, it does!

Help says The picture in the number one position is considered the
Preferred Picture by default This picture is displayed on the Family
and Pedigree Views whenever the individual is current. The Preferred
Picture is also printed on reports that include pictures.

Obviously if you only have one picture it will be in the number one
position!

You can prevent a picture appearing in reports by the use of Picture
Tagging and Report Options, but it will still show on the person's
profile.

What you could do is create a blank or dummy image and attach it in
the first position.

RE: [LegacyUG] Picture Center - Undo Set Preferred

2009-09-12 Thread William H. Boswell
That's a great idea. It really isn't a big deal, I just don't want the
person's profile photo to be a tombstone. I think I've figured that out
though. I figured out how to move the images from Individual to my Grave
position using the Pic Center.

It's taking some time getting used to Legacy because there is a big
difference between FTM and Legacy. For instance, sources can be viewed
instantly in FTM 2009 when you click on an event, name or anything else.
The way Legacy is set up to do this is very awkward to say the least and not
very efficient in my opinion.

I also found that when I converted my data over to Legacy, the photos and
information were duplicated for each time they were used. I'm having to go
into the Picture Center's Picture List, select each image and re-enter the
information, remove the old image then relink to those same people. I found
this out when I had to edit the text information (date, name, etc.) on one
individual and it didn't update for the others.

I think doing things over manually is the better option since I find other
errors along the way.

This is a lot of work reorganizing all this stuff again. I did this last
year in FTM and it took almost a year. However, Legacy has better output
than FTM ever will.

I'm wondering if my Grave field for individual tombstone photos is the way
to go with this. Somebody else said they put it under Cemetery. I'm
thinking later on when I want to print out a list of people buried in a
particular cemetery I would like to have all this information included.

I don't know enough about Legacy to figure out the best way to organize this
data. Although cleanup has to be done.

Another suggestion - import a test file of you data to Legacy and just
play around with it for awhile. Try entering information in different
ways and then checking various reports and the many options within
those reports to see how it looks, what you like and don't like. In
general, get familiar with all of the features. I did this for about 2
months when I moved from FTM v.16 to Legacy a couple of years ago and
I think it was time very well spent. During this time, I tried to
clicked on everything in Legacy to get a feel for what could be done.
Then after I felt comfortable with the software and had an idea of how
I wanted to set things up, I imported a clean file, tagged everyone in
the file with Tag 1 and started to work. I looked at each person,
added events and photos and made sure they were set up like I wanted
then deleted the tag so I knew I had finished that person. That took
some serious time (and I still have some cousins I haven't done) but I
started with my direct line and the siblings of my direct line because
they are the people I have the most details about.

As to your question about whether or not Grave is the best way to go
for tombstone photos - it's really just your preference. I added an
event Grave Marker (the event name doesn't really matter) to which I
attach tombstone photos. My main emphasis is a website and I wanted
the tombstone photo to be the last thing displayed on the person's
webpage.

Legacy is broken and won't load without crashing. I've given up on it.
While I think it's a great program with a lot of features, I can't get past
the crashing especially when working with images. If it won't cooperate
with the images, then I have no need for it.

I'm going back to TMG until something better comes along. I just wasted the

If what your feeling is that your only picture for a person is the grave, which
you don't want to look at continuously, you might want to take one of the
default pictures with Windows (flowers, skys, animals, etc.). They are already
in the DB, so no downloading, and minimal space requirements. It is better than
removing them and misplacing those photos you want in the directories. I have
also added photos of buildings family lived in, and churches they attended, and
finally postcards for the area. You may never find a 'mugshot' of your person
but you can find something positive to memorialize each one.
