[LegacyUG] v8 Name Tags - Excellent feature
Following the problems Cheryl was having trying to figure out how to tag a family line in order to create Name Tags for a family reunion, I took a first look at the process. I must admit this is a very neat feature of Legacy v8. To be able to include a photo of the named person on the Name Tag, to include a small descendant chart of the person in relation to their place in the family and to be able to add the name of the Family Reunion really makes the Name Tags personal to each recipient! To be able to create these printed Name Tags from your database with a few clicks of the mouse is a real time saver and makes a great contribution to a family reunion. Well done, Legacy! Thanks, Cheryl, for bringing this feature to my attention. [LegacyUG] GeoLocation Database - Windows 8.1
I have Windows 8.1 and have successfully installed Legacy 8.0. However, I am not able to install the GeoLocation Database. Error message says To find a version for your PC, contact the software publisher. I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, etc. Can anyone help? [LegacyUG] How to alert to a problem
Let's say you have info about a John Doe, b 1783, but you're not sure he's the *right* John Doe and and that you have entered children, wife, bdm info, census info, whatever, that actually belong to a different John Doe. How do you alert yourself and/or others to the problem. I've been putting it in the christening field in caps w/ excl points: !!MAY BE THE WRONG JOHN DOE!! but it doesn't seem very professional, I'm sure there's a better way and I'm wonder how others handle such problems. Re: [LegacyUG] GeoLocation Database - Windows 8.1
If you had Legacy 7.5, just copy the GEO folder contents to the proper location in Legacy 8. No changes in it. Re: [LegacyUG] How to alert to a problem
I put things like [Bad Data?] or [Wrong husband?] or [See Notes!] in the given name field. That is always visible. May also put a better explanation in the persons general notes. [LegacyUG] Post about Legacy platform
Did any of you see the blog post from Louis Kessler with Behold Genealogy about some comments on various genealogy matters? He mentioned Legacy (in conjunction with the recent TMG close up). Specifically that Legacy was built on same platform (FoxPro) and that this will prove to be a problem now and in future. Any thoughts from those more behind the curtain tech folks in this group? Re: [LegacyUG] Post about Legacy platform
My understanding is that Legacy has been built using the MSAccess jet database engine and Microsoft Visual Basic...not FoxPro. However, Kessler's argument rings true as these programs themselves are now quite dated. Programming using the jet engine has been obsolete for several years and VB though it has moved to the .Net environment is not as well liked as say C# (sharp). Milennia will need to move away from these environments if it is going to survive in the long run. However, right now I still believe Legacy 8 is the best genealogy program out there. At a guess, based on experiences with programs/languages doing things more more vital than genealogy, the longer it takes them to move away the better off we'll all be. Comes under the heading of better the devil you know. If Legacy doesn't survive, something will come along to replace it in a different environment. We can always go back to pencil and paper, which would revive the printing business nicely.
