[LegacyUG] Switching fields in an event

2015-03-03 Thread Kirsty M. Haining
Hi, everyone -

I'm hoping someone has already solved this problem and knows what to do. I
have imported data that has information in the description field that I want
to be in my event notes field. How can I get the data from these fields to
be switched automatically (and, obviously, quickly and efficiently)?

Thanks for your help.

cheers,

Kirsty Haining

[LegacyUG] Marriage list

2015-03-03 Thread Ila East
After discussing filing systems, I decided this morning to check my marriage
list and I found hundreds of marriages with Unknown and Unknown. When I got to
investigating further I found that each marriage had either a source attached,
a marriage note, or a date. I went through a number of these marriages and
deleted all the data and then had Legacy renumber the MRINs. Several were
reused, but most were not. I then went through the same ones and made sure I
removed the marriage link. These marriages disappeared from the screen, but
when I had Legacy renumber the MRINs these were not reused and showed up again.

I am assuming these marriages were created when I imported my GEDCOM file from
FTM for the Mac after I got my Windows computer and started using Legacy again.
It looks like each marriage was created as it should have been with all the
data and then the marriage data was also placed in blank marriages thus
creating these “ghost” marriages.

I have tried compacting the family file, and check and repair but nothing has
helped. These “darling” marriages still show up. I feel like there must be
something I am missing and need help finding it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Marriage list

2015-03-03 Thread Ila East
As my mother would say, when the blood got back to my brain I finally
understood what was happening. I deleted the marriage link and that got rid of
that marriage. But, when I had Legacy renumber the MRINs it moved a “ghost”
marriage into the number I had just cleared. So, I have now started at the end
of the list and hopefully this will solve my problem.

Subject of the message. The contents is your verbiage.

I see you're using gmail as an email address, and from the contents of your
earlier messages, it is not clear whether you're using a browser logged into
GMail or an offline email client. I suspect the former. In which case, when you
click on the Compose button from within gmail, you're shown a window that has
the title New Message. Below that are two of the aforementioned envelope
fields: the To Address and the Subject. The other envelope fields are
automatically filled in for you. Below the Subject is where the Contents go,
Now, the Subject is important because it tells people concisely (or should do)
what your message is all about. Get it wrong and people are likely to ignore
you.

One other thing to mention is the thorny subject of Message Threading: this is
the grouping of related messages and their replies. Now, Google likes to think
that every message that has the same Subject line belongs to the same thread.
This is not strictly correct according to the Internet Standards, but when did
agreed standards ever bother Google or Microsoft. If you start a new message by
taking an existing message, changing the subject and replacing the contents with
your own, your message is not the start of a new thread: it's actually another
reply in the thread to which the starter message belongs to.

So, don't confuse 'Compose' with 'Reply'. The first starts a new thread, the
latter continues an existing one.

RE: [LegacyUG] Marriage list

2015-03-03 Thread Michele/Support
Ila,

Go to the Marriage List.

Highlight each marriage that is shown as unknown-unknown one at a time and then
go to Options Remove the Marriage link. If there is only one child attached
to that marriage go ahead and remove the link. If there are two or more
children attached to that marriage link then don’t remove the link, instead, go
to Edit Husband and add the surname of the children.

It is very likely you got all of the these unknown-unknowns from a gedcom
import.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Marriage list

The subject line of *this* message is: Switching fields in an event

That is not the subject line you need for YOUR question

You need one that refers to YOUR question.

Open Gmail and go into your account.

Click on compose on the left

That will open a box which has New Message at the top

Under that is a box with To at the beginning which will disappear when
you put in the address. You put legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com in
that box

Under that is another box which has Subject at the beginning which
again will disappear when you put in the subject

Next is a big box for your message

You've nearly finished :)

In the very bottom right hand corner you will see a little arrow. If
you put your mouse over that, it says More Options. Click on the arrow.

One of the options (choices) that appears in the menu is Plain text
mode Click on that option. The box will disappear but don't worry
about that. Gmail has done what you've chosen

Last step: click on Send in the bottom left hand corner of the box
you've composed your message.

In a few minutes your message will appear on the list.

I'm going to send you some pictures of the steps off list that may
help you see what I've said above.

Legacy won't let you add a sibling if there isn't at least one parent.

Maybe putting in one child automatically shows the unknown parents as
that simply because the child must have had parents.

Re: [LegacyUG] Marriage list

2015-03-03 Thread Jay Wilpolt
Leon,

This is NOT a bug.
It's just 'leftover' data in most cases.

There are many ways these 'ghost' marriages are created and they stay in
Legacy until you delete them.
Why, because Legacy knows it isnt as smart as you are,
and never assumes that just because you are removing a spouse or child from
a marriage doesnt mean that marriage isnt valid.

If you are on the Family View, and the wife has no parents, when you click
on the 'parents' field to add someone, a marriage is created in Legacy,
even if you dont add any names.

By using a gedcom validator like Bonkers or the error checking in programs
like Genealogica Grafica, you can review your files for errors like these
that build up over time.

Hope that helps.
Jay

[LegacyUG] How Many Individual Information Pages for Females?

Re: [LegacyUG] Switching fields in an event

2015-03-03 Thread Howard Cady
Kirsty, There is a work around for this error in LegacyFamilyTree, but first I
will re-report the error and then give a work around example.
My OS Windows 8.1, 32 and 64 bit computers, Legacy version 8.0.0.473 setup
to connect to FamilySearch (FSFT) with remembered name and password.
Some individuals in FSFT have under “Facts and Events” an entry “Life
Sketch” e.g. William Scott b. 25 Sep 1801, d. 1 Jun 1880, FS ID# LWQM-F3Q. The
Life Sketch Event’s description can be quite long and far exceeding 255
characters. When I try to share this type of event by downloading (sharing)
from FS to Legacy on my computer Legacy stores the information in Table tblER
and tries to store the description in a 255 character field tblER.Description
rather than the proper MEMO field tblER.Desc (What a confusing choice of field
names!). When the Description field overflows (255 characters) a message is
sent to FS that causes it to instantly drop my internet connection and generate
an OS Error on my computer. Until I have deleted the offending event I am not
allowed to reconnect to FS with that person active.
This error was reported to Legacy in September 2014 and a ticket for repair
generated, but the error was not fixed thru version 473.
I do not know anything about uploading a LifeSketch Event from Legacy to FS,
but I have my doubts.

THE WORK AROUND – BABY STEPS USING A COPY OF LEGACY’S SAMPLE FILE
1.Create an unattached male - William Scott b. 25 Sep 1801, d. 1 Jun 1880,
FS ID# LWQM-F3Q. and select him in Legacy’s Individual Information Screen.
2.Connect to FamilySearch by clicking the FamilySearch tool in Legacy –
should display 15 possible duplicates
3.Select the Share Tab – should display William Scott’s information -
Legacy on the left and FamilySearch info on the right.
4.Find the “LifeSketch” event on the right (FSFT) side and click the share
arrow to start the download to your file. This will bring up a screen “Select
action to perform” with the right side showing “Legacy” information and the
left showing “FamilySearch” with more than a screen full of information.
5.Use the Windows select feature to highlight the FSFT information and
ctrl-c to copy the information to Windows clip board.
6.Close the FSFT window, return to the Legacy’s Individual Information
Screen, and open the Individual Information Screen to add an event to William
Scott’s information.
7.Add a “LifeSketch” event to William Scott. Select the Notes field and use
ctrl-v to transfer windows clip board to the Notes field.
8.Enter anything you want into the Date and Place fields, but DO NOT enter
anything in the Description field of this event. (Anything in the Description
field will prevent connection of this individual for further sharing with FSFT)

I do not know which event caused you trouble, but I suspect the same difficulty
with any event that has lots of information in the FSFT description field.

I'm using v8.0.0.467, Win7. This latest release has introduced a problem
in creating event notes. When I try to highlight a portion of a sentence
by making it bold and/or underlined, a couple of extra spaces are
introduced before that portion of the sentence as well as after it, but
before the comma or semicolon leading to the rest of the sentence. This
has not happened before. Those extra sentences are also underlined if u/l
 is used.

Does anyone else see this happening? For example:

He was head of a household that included his wife, Elza, age 39; and
children Samantha, age 17;...etc. This becomes: He was head of a household
that included his* wife, Elza, age 39 *; and children Samantha, age
 17. etc.

This unfortunate error occurs only after one saves the event. Opening it
again will display the problem. This error is repeatable. It does not
appear when I open an existing event that already has some highlighting of
this type. However if I undo the highlighting there, and then redo it, the
error appears. Thus it appears to me that the problem was introduced by
 release 467.

know the names of their parents or even if the surname they used was
 their birth one.

Legacy won't let you add a sibling if there isn't at least one parent.

Maybe putting in one child automatically shows the unknown parents as
that simply because the child must have had parents.

Priscilla,

You enter females using their maiden name. If you select the option to
“include married names” on the Name List, you will see them under both names.
If you see her name on a document with her married name then you can add it as
an AKA. You shouldn’t arbitrarily add someone’s married name to the AKA field
unless you have a source for it.

Each person only has one Individual Information page.

Open Gmail and go into your account.

That will open a box which has New Message at the top

One of the options (choices) that appears in the menu is Plain text

In a few minutes your message will appear on the list.

Males are coloured blue and females red so I know which gender they

I suppose I could add all the children to the notes field of both the

change the relevant fields.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Switching fields in an event

Hi, everyone —

I’m hoping someone has already solved this problem and knows what to do. I
have imported data that has information in the description field that I want to
be in my event notes field. How can I get the data from these fields to be
switched automatically (and, obviously, quickly and efficiently)?

Thanks for your help.

cheers,

RE: [LegacyUG] How Many Individual Information Pages for Females?

2015-03-03 Thread David Abernathy
Always use the maiden names for ALL females. If you do NOT know the maiden name
then use something that tells you that you are missing the maiden and, so you
can always search for it later.

I never even use the “Display married name”, this way I continue to see that I
have more work to do in finding the maiden name.

Just add the additional husbands using the marriage method.

Thanks,

Subject: [LegacyUG] How Many Individual Information Pages for Females?

Should females be included in Legacy under their maiden names only or should
you enter them under each married name? For example, Mary Smith is her maiden
name. Her first husband was John Jones and her second husband was Harry
Thompson. Do I have only one Individual Information Page for Mary Smith that
includes all events in her life, even those events occurring during her
marriages and under her married names? Or do I create three Individual
Information Pages, one for each surname that she used in her lifetime?

Many thanks!

Re: [LegacyUG] Using Married Names

2015-03-03 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Gerald,
For a Calendar list, if you want both, you are going to have to keep
doing what you are now OR see below.
For other reports, if you've entered an AKA for the married name, both
will show if you choose to include the AKAs.

The standard is to always enter with the maiden name. Also add the
previous marriage and make sure you check the Husband list and put them
in the right order using the arrow keys. If you don't know the previous
husband's name, you at least usually know his surname.
I show the name used at the time of the marriage in the source for the
marriage.
You could also add a Marriage Note saying she was a widow or divorcee at
the time of the marriage.

OR you are going to have to break the standards and enter with the
married surname and use the Title Suffix field to add the maiden name-
eg nee Huffman
or formerly Davies nee Huffman

Whatever you do it has to be clear to someone else. Just adding other
surnames in brackets or just tagged on to the Given Names is confusing.

On a similar vein, and I have asked this before, but got no answer.
When producing a calendar report for birthdays for a month, I have the
option for females with maiden name OR married name, but not both. I
often need both names, since it helps identifying who a person is, and
how she fits into our family (descendant or in-law). But I have to
produce two reports, and then manually produce a separate document
including both names. Is there an easier way to do this? How can I
produce a report with both the maiden AND the married name?

I only add them under their maiden name.

How do you want to enter them? Maiden name or married name/s?

I'm using v8.0.0.467, Win7. This latest release has introduced a problem

introduced before that portion of the sentence as well as after it, but
before the comma or semicolon leading to the rest of the sentence. This

Does anyone else see this happening? For example:

He was head of a household that included his wife, Elza, age 39; and

 household
that included his* wife, Elza, age 39 *; and children Samantha, age
  17. etc.

This unfortunate error occurs only after one saves the event. Opening it
again will display the problem. This error is repeatable. It does not
appear when I open an existing event that already has some highlighting
 of
this type. However if I undo the highlighting there, and then redo it,
 the
error appears. Thus it appears to me that the problem was introduced by
  release 467.

RE: [LegacyUG] Marriage list

2015-03-03 Thread Michele/Support
Charani,
You can simply add a father with the surname of the children that are siblings.
Leave his given name blank and don't add a wife. This will keep your siblings
linked together.

I've just produced a list of marriages and found the same thing but in my case

their parents or even if the surname they used was their birth one.

Legacy won't let you add a sibling if there isn't at least one parent.

Maybe putting in one child automatically shows the unknown parents as that
simply because the child must have had parents.
