Re: [LegacyUG] Location of Legacy Files

2020-05-10 Thread Brian Kelly
Legacy will always recreate the Legacy Folder unless you move the
location of your Documents folder using Windows. It needs to have the
_Appdata folder in your Documents\Legacy Family Tree folder so if you
move the Legacy Family Tree folder outside your Documents Legacy will
recreate it next time you run the program. Cannot remember exactly how
but I think you need to right click on your Documents folder and change
the properties to point to a new location. This move will affect all
programs which use your Documents folder to store files.

You can however use the Legacy settings in Section 6 to change the
default location of your data and media files so they can be wherever
you wish.

Re: [LegacyUG] Location of Legacy Files

2020-05-10 Thread Chris Hill

It is quite simple, but not always obvious !

C:\Program Files (x86)\Legacy9 is the running executable program and
its support files. Since Win 8? this file is blocked from normal access
by applications.

C:\ProgramData is a hidden folder used by Windows to hold
installation files, and should never be accessed.

x:\Users\\Documents\Legacy Family Tree is the default folder for
user related data. (In pre-V8 Legacy that was combined with the
executable files into C;\Legacy... ) This folder includes the
configuration files, usually within the _AppData folder, and the user
data, within the Data and Media folders, unless you move Options 6.1 and
6.2 to relocate the user data.

Don't know about Parallels but I suspect that it has mapped part of
the x:\Users\\ structure into the Mac file structure. While you
could access those from the Mac directly there is always the risk of
corrupting them.

Regards

Chris

Thanks - Likely I'll use some other date/location construct but bunching
the family names with a separator is nice way to go.

I would use:

Year-month-day_state-town_lastname_lastname_lastname

I include the date and location if known.
Of course, you could just start with the last namesseparated by the
underscore (or a comma).  Add whatever works with the way you
usually name them.
