Re: [LegacyUG] uppercase surnames

2020-05-11 Thread Brian Kelly
Not sure that there is any formal statement on use of mixed case
surnames so here is my take on the change.

All Uppercase surnames are a holdover from the days BC (before computer)
where genealogical records and reports were either hand written or
typewritten. All Uppercase surnames were used to highlight and give
emphasis to surnames making them more visible.

Nowadays it is so easy to have the computer change the display and/or
output of surnames in all uppercase when needed that now it is just
easier to use Initial Caps or mixed case in surnames and let the
computer do the work of translation to uppercase when needed.

It is much more difficult to translate an all uppercase surname to mixed
case because of surnames which have an internal uppercase letter like
McKenzie, MacDougal VanGough etc. The computer cannot correctly change
the case from uppercase to mixed case in those cases.

That is a GREAT question. And one I struggle with so I generally list them with
my most recent genealogical interest 1st, then others, date of pic, place. I’d
love to hear what others do.

Example 1: Bennett 3, Wm Robt & Icephenia KENNEDY, 1 gparents Miles & Laura
JORDAN & 2 parents Rich. & wf Luann GAUNNT [which is a tryptich, entered 3
times, each time with a different photo listed 1st]

Example 2: Taylor, Tommy R & Hope WALDEN, Bob & Helen Walden, Lyn & Gary & Lee
Murray abt 1968 MA [this one I feel badly about as I listed my father 1st even
tho he is not on the left side of the picture]

See? I’d love to know what others do.

The use of RIN numbers in identifying images and documents may have a downside
if you are in the habit of merging individuals together with their immediate
families were two RINs become one. If you also have set your RIN numbering to
use “Reuse abandoned RINs” (Option 4.4) this could lead to further
complications in your image and document identification.

Just a thought.

No judgement here, just something to think about - our genealogy data is
not really ours.  It is a legacy for those to come after. I personally
weigh my preferences against the "standard", keeping in mind that my
data is there to be shared.  The more standard formats I can follow, the
easier it is to share the data.

Yes, right-click, select Properties and then the Location tab. I have

moved all those System folders like Documents and Pictures. Works fine.

Re: [LegacyUG] Location of Legacy Files

2020-05-11 Thread Cathy Pinner

Here's a full explanation of the folders Legacy uses.

I understand that those using Parallels do better when everything is on
the Windows side of the Mac.

Legacy from version 8 on should be installed in the Program Files
folders - the default installation.

In addition Legacy uses ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\
folder for Legacy settings. This cannot be changed. It will be recreated
with defaults in the computer users Documents folder wherever that may
be. [The default in Windows 10 is C:\users\\Documents\ The
Documents folder can be moved but you need to do this using the Tools
Windows provides. You right click and choose Properties and then the
Location tab.]

Legacy data is by default saved at ...\Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\Data\ folder but can be saved anywhere and you tell Legacy the
default Data folder at Options - Customise 6.1 Also note that
Options-Customise 1.2 controls which file is opened when you open Legacy.

Legacy media is by default saved at ...\Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\Media\ folder but can be saved anywhere. You tell Legacy the parent
folder for media at Options - Customise 6.2. There is a problem if the
path + filename gets too long so it's wise not to have too many layers
of sub-folders.

Legacy backups by default are saved in the Data folder as that's the one
Legacy knows about but obviously should be saved elsewhere (and a folder
that syncs to the cloud like Dropbox is the easiest way to get the
backup off the computer).. The backup path is saved into the Family File
when the backup is done from File - File Backup but doesn't appear to be
saved if you make the change when backing up on exit. [I think it is now].

Your data files can be in Dropbox or similar BUT don't have the file
open on more than one computer at a time. AND make sure that the sync up
from one computer is complete and the sync down to the other computer is
complete before you close the first computer and before you open Legacy
on the other EVERY TIME you switch computer or you'll get conflicted copies.

Yes, very easy. You can use Options and settings 6.1 and 6.2 to
specify where you want the data and media files located, within the
area that Windows can see.

In a normal windows based computer the Legacy Family Tree folder is
located in the user's Documents folder. It looks like your Parallels
is using the Mac side for the user's Windows documents folder so that
is where Legacy created your Legacy Family Tree folder to hold all the
user related data it needs.

The sub-folders in that folder should include _AppData which Legacy
uses for settings and working files, Data where the user's Data files
are stored by default and a variety of other folders like Media,
LegacyFS (used with the FamilySearch interface module), LegacyCharting
(self-explanatory), Sample-Media (for media belonging to the Sample
file provided with Legacy) and web (for use when creating web pages).

The first two folders you mention on the Windows side are created by
the install program and contain the program and its support files. You
should not attempt to make any changes to those two folders since they
are in restricted access areas.
