Re: [LegacyUG] What to do with genealogical files after death of compi ler
I would be very interested in your 5 page and reference sheet. Do you mind if I share it with my genealogy class. You can send to me direct, eb_pacnw at hotmail.com , thank you. Erin If anyone is interested I will be happy to send them a five-page rationale and a one-page quick reference sheet, both in MS Word format, or to publish that rationale here if there is sufficient demand. Re: [LegacyUG] Baptism and Christening
Al, Personally, I do not distinguish between chr and bap. I had a Catholic raised father that told my mother that we could be baptized as long as it was not Catholic. So to me I see it the same. I was bap. Baptist and my father and his ancestors were bap. as christened. I chose to enter the additional line after born and christened, because I have trouble deciphering the Catholic priests writing for their records and don't really have birth dates. Paul, Thank you for that extra tip. Using the default Legacy folders C:\Legacy\Data.. works fine, as will anything up in the 'root folder', often C:\something. I actually use Dropbox, but have installed it as C:\Dropbox, rather than the normal default C:\My Documents\Dropbox precisely because of the multimedia linking issue. Re: [LegacyUG] UnSourced Internet Trees
I have a perfect example of unsourced trees. I contacted a woman on Ancestry that had included my great grandfather Merret. She even had a copy of his deaf certificate with cause of death. When I contacted her to ask how she was related to him (I had a copy of his Bible record with all the children listed), she responded saying that all the Merrit families in Wayne County, Illinois were related. I responded back - really? Because my great grandfather was illegitimate. (I knew his mother and was lucky enough to have copies of letters written by her.) I never heard from this woman again. And she no longer included my grandfather and his family in her tree. Re: [LegacyUG] UnSourced Internet Trees
Tom, I would not have been against including her in our family. But she obviously didn't want to be part of mine. I do go back to a family reunion of a branch of descendants and when asked which line I belonged to, I replied that actually I was descended from J. C. Merret. The lady then said, Oh, do you know that he was illegitimate? I said, yes, that I'd heard that. It was a great group of people. My only point in my story was to verify the info as you have said. I also have had to correct family oral history on my father's side. So I have been in the same boat. Luckily Legacy is a gem of a program and makes documenting the information so much easier and professional (which I am not). Re: [LegacyUG] Dictation question
I am using it on Vista to transcribe 19 chapters of a autobiography written by my husband's great grandfather in the classified ads of his local newspaper. If you take the time to work through the speech recognition setup so the computer gets used to your speech idiosyncrasies then it works very well. Also take the time to learn the commands for correction, etc. I am impressed and my hubby thinks it is easier than DNS. I am glad to hear that it will work in Legacy even in some part. I will test it on the individual input pages. It should work by saying tab to get to the next space. Re: [LegacyUG] Dictation question
Actually, I know I couldn't properly pronounce them in the first place so I'd type those. But if you say spell it and it's something you know you'll use a lot, you can choose to add the word to it's memory. Of course, there will always be times that you just couldn't dictate. I am sure that in family of names other than English language, as French, Polish, and other than have special characters, an English language based speech recognition just wouldn't work. [LegacyUG] Surname input
What is the best way to input the surnames in the following situation? I have the surname Cummings but the family used the name Vien or Viens in Quebec and Cummings in the USA. I cannot use the AKA feature, because some of the family never left Quebec so their name remained Vien(s) and the families that were baptized in Quebec began with that name, but died with the name Cummings. One family moved back and forth several times, so in alternating records their name changed. For instance I have Marie Viens who married Louis Duval. They remained in Quebec. Her brother Joseph moved back and forth and used both names and in US records listed his father as Joseph Cummings, But I cannot link the father to Marie Viens and still list the father as Cummings. I thought of putting the Surname in as Vien/Cummings or vice versa but legacy doesn't seem to like that. Also the brother Joseph is listed in Quebec census records as Vien until 1891 when he is listed as Cummings . His children, at his death, then moved to Vermont and from then on used Cummings. Yikes!!!
