Re: [LegacyUG] Ethnicity

2014-10-14 Thread M Sandvig
I changed 'christening' to 'Tribe'.
On Oct 12, 2014 2:07 PM, fersken fers...@verizon.net wrote:

Since the emergence of the Origin’s Report, I have been considering the
difference between place of birth and ethnicity. I have Montaukett Indian
ancestry in my background but on the Origin’s report, the only thing they
represent is U.S. The *Montaukett* or *Montauk people* are a Native
 American
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_Americans_in_the_United_States tribe
 of Algonquian http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algonquian_languages-speaking
people from the eastern end of Long Island
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Island, New York
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York. I have in my direct ancestry a
chief of the Montaukett named Wyandanch. In the the second half of the
1650s, Wyandanch had acquired enough power and influence to be considered
the main alliance chief on a Long Island by the colonists. My Origin’s
Report shows United States and I began to wonder if Legacy 8.0 had any way
of showing ethnicity? I could find nothing on the subject. In this 21st
century in the United States, there are many who are of mixed ethnicities.
While I understand the problematic concept of setting up a column to show
ethnicity and the possibility of offending some people, I wonder if there
isn’t some way to include race* if the researcher wanted to*. The census
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_and_ethnicity_in_the_United_States_Census
officially recognizes six ethnic and racial categories: White American,
Native American and Alaska Native, Asian American, African American, Native
Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and people of two or more races; a
race called Some other race is also used in the census and other surveys,
but is not official. The United States Census Bureau also classifies
Americans as Hispanic or Latino and Not Hispanic or Latino, which
 identifies Hispanic and Latino Americans
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispanic_and_Latino_Americans as a
 racially diverse *ethnicity*
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_and_ethnicity_in_the_United_States_Census
that composes the largest minority group in the nation. Apparently,
this concept of including ethnicity rather that place of origin is too
“touchy” for any genealogical software company to touch. My question,
therefore, is this: Is there any way I can indicate (other than in the
notes) that some of my direct ancestors are Native American and not mix
 them together as United States?

Re: [LegacyUG] American Indian ancestors

2014-05-27 Thread M Sandvig
I would like to weigh in on the other side of the question. I am an
American Indian, I am enrolled at Colville.   Chief is not a first name;
it's a misrepresentation of a Title, usually something on the order of
Head-Man. The way Legacy handles names is one of the reasons I chose it.
In instances where the person only has one name, I have placed it as the
given name, not the surname. I also place tribal affiliation in a
'Nationality' category.
As for researching these people, try the Lenape nation's website. Send a
message to either their Historian or Probate Officer.

Then they've got his father as Chief Unami, Delaware tribe Lenape Nation
 Nutimus.

 How would you handle this?

[LegacyUG] Obits

2013-07-24 Thread M Sandvig
I need advice on sourcing an obit. It is a regular obituary from a
newspaper. Do you recommend using Sourcewriter / newspaper? Or should I
create an 'Event' Obituaries?
I am struggling with this as I know it will make a difference in Reports.
My ultimate goal is to have the obituary print out with the individuals'
information in a book style report.

Is it possible to add/change one of the Family View labels? The five

I have looked through the Custom Display list and what I want isn't there.
Can I add one of my own making?

(we're American Indians; I would like a label that indicates whether the

If there isn’t a place to record race (if there is I couldn’t find it) it

I want to record place names in accordance with the common standard, that
is, at the time the event occurred. I have an entire family who came from
Saint Wendel, which is in the Saarland of Germany. Tracking the history of
this region is not easy, as it has been, at various times in the last 200
years, part of Lichtenstein, Prussia, Bavaria, the German Empire, Germany,
an independent state, and a protectorate of the United Nations.

If Centennia does nothing more than show me the change in borders of
Germany, that's probably not enough detail for me. I'd like to see the
evolution of the Rheinland-Pflaz, and even, if possible Sankt Wendel Kreis,
the district that Sankt Wendel sits in.

So, particularly for users of AniMap, is Centennia worth its price?

 Thanks,
 Scott
