Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Family Tree for Mac

2018-06-11 Thread Michael Feldman
I run it on my Mac without problems using Windows XP under Oracle
Virtual Box (a free program). I'm not a heavy user or a serious
genealogist, but I've found LFT to be a better program than the native
Mac alternatives. It would be very nice to see someone develop a new LFT
from scratch on a common code base that could be ported to Windows, Mac,
and Linux without too much difficulty. I wonder if Millenia has done a
serious market survey on this -- they could reach a potentially very
large market if they used this multi-platform approach.

Or if nobody is making much money these days on LFT, maybe they could
even release the VB source and let the open-source world
reverse-engineer it and rewrite it using something more up to date than
VB. The success of big multiplatform open-source projects like Firefox
is a good indicator of the progress we've made in separating
multiplatform concerns from platform-specific ones. Mac, Windows, and
Linux are not *that* different anymore.

Conversion to the current Visual Basic .NET is possible, but it is not
backwards compatible and the conversion process is not possible for most

The reason that My Heritage is making this special offer is to grow their

Re: [LegacyUG] digest mode?

2017-07-08 Thread Michael Feldman

Hi all,

If I'm not mistaken, this group is hosted under the Mailman program.
I checked the Mailman website and discovered this:

"Q. What does Mailman's "digest" checkbox do?
"A. Mailman's "Membership Management" screen shows the subscribers
to your list and the various options set for each subscriber. One of
these options is the "digest" checkbox. If a subscriber has the
"digest" box checked, that subscriber will not receive each message
as it's sent to the list. Instead, the day's messages will be
grouped together and sent as a single message. If your list sends
several messages a day, the digest option gives the subscriber a way
to cut down on the total number of messages in his or her "in box",
while still seeing everything sent to the list."

So apparently it would be possible for this list to support digests,
just by checking a box for the individual subscriber. There seems to
be no technical reason for Legacy UG not to support this. Legacy
managers, would you be willing to do it if a subscriber requests it?
    Is there a downside?

Best regards,
Michael Feldman

Re: [LegacyUG] Divorce in Legacy Charting

2017-06-16 Thread Michael Feldman

Hi all,

I've just completed a set of descendant charts for a reunion of my
mother's extended family. The event -- the first such in 50 years --
took place last Saturday in Philadelphia with splendid turnout, and
everyone had a wonderful time.

Many in attendance were wowed by the 20-page booklet showing the 5
generations starting with my grandparents who arrived in the US in
1907. My mom was the youngest of their eight children. Using v8, I
was able to control the chart content on each page by adjusting its
starting point and number of generations displayed. This allowed me
to produce a very attractive set of sub-family charts (one or a few
pages for each of the eight). A number of my relatives made clear
that this would be a tremendous resource for them and their kids.

I handled the divorce issue by inserting a little text box with
"div" just above the double line that connects spouses. (See the
"Insert" tab -- 3rd item in the chart menu.) Luckily there weren't
too many of these. I also confirmed with divorced family members
whether or not they wanted the "div" to be published in the chart.
Some did, some didn't. I made a policy decision to prioritize family
harmony over genealogical precision -- this was definitely the right
choice for the circumstances.

I found the ability to hand-edit a chart -- move boxes to better fit
them on a page, add text boxes, etc. -- to be a useful feature. I do
wish the chart were better integrated with the database; as it is,
even a slight change to a box's content (correct a typo or whatever)
requires the chart to be regenerated from scratch, so any
hand-editing is lost and must be re-done. I'd like to see a Legacy
chart work more like one in a spreadsheet -- the chart is
dynamically linked to its content so a change in the database is
automagically reflected in the chart.

I'd also like to be able to specify that a date be displayed as
year-only. In this era of privacy concerns, one's birth date has
become an important identifier (especially in health care). I'd like
to be able to flip a switch to suppress month and day, so as to show
the approximate age of a relative without exposing their full birth
date. Perhaps I'm missing something, but with v8, I found no way to
do this except to physically delete month and day from their record
in the database.

I'll put these in as suggestions. All in all, I was satisfied with
Legacy as a vehicle for this. For now, my project is complete; we'll
see what the future brings.

Re: [LegacyUG] Favorite new features of V9

2017-05-28 Thread Michael Feldman

Hi all,

I had a similar situation. I was able to regress to v.8, but it wasn't so easy:

(1) The v.9 installer deleted my installed v.8 (without my permission). Luckily,
I had kept my v.8 installer and unlock code, so I could manually uninstall v.9
and reinstall v.8.

(2) V. 9 converted the v.8 database I was working on, to its (apparently) new
file format, so it wouldn't open with v.9. Luckily, I had kept regular v.8
backups, so I could restore it in v.8 regress to the very latest database before
the attempted switch to v.9. Luckily, I made this decision before investing much
work in my v.9 database, so the only wasted effort was the upgrade --> regress
process.

(Well, I also wasted the money for v.9, because I made the mistake of paying for
v.8 two weeks before the free-upgrade offer started. Under the circumstances, I
thought maybe Sales would be friendly and honor the free upgrade anyway. Nah, no
such luck.)

Over more than 40 years of working with software, I've learned to be pretty
obsessive about keeping backups and never throwing anything away, especially
things like old installers. Luckily, disk space is now cheap and plentiful, so
being a packrat is not as hard as it used to be. Developers, it seems, have not
gotten much better at providing a friendly process for regressing to their old
version(s). I guess they figure their new versions are so wonderful and flawless
that nobody would ever want to regress.

So when you move up to v.9, just be advised. For now, I'm sticking with v8.

Mike

Re: [LegacyUG] Date display in chart

2017-05-15 Thread Michael Feldman

Hi all,

In readying my extended-family tree for copying and distribution at an upcoming
major reunion, I've decided it would be best to show birth years but refrain
from showing full dates. Is there a way in Legacy to enter a full date into the
database, but specify that only the year will be displayed in a chart? I haven't
found anything like this in Legacy 8.

I'm thinking of privacy concerns here. Some of my relatives would be
uncomfortable seeing their birth dates appear in a family tree chart, because
one's birth date is becoming an increasingly important -- thus sensitive -- bit
of identifying information. Health care providers, for example, ask patients to
ID themselves with name and birth date (instead of social security number as in
bygone days).

Thanks in advance for any advice!

to a U.S. style 4/29/2017), but this doesn't seem to get passed through to the
charting program. In my charts, I can't seem to get anything but the
British-style 29 Apr 2017. Is there a chart option to change the date format?

Thanks again!
Mike

One way would be to go into the Privacy Settings on each spouse's
Individual'sInformation page and (temporarily)cset him/her to Invisible.

Second, how do I request a descendant chart whose generations go
left-to-right instead of top-down?

Can't remember back to that version of Legacy but on 9 (and I'm sure 8 was the
same) the left-to-right version of the chart was the second one labelled
"Standard" along the row marked Descendant when selecting the chart type.

[LegacyUG] Descendant chart

2017-04-29 Thread Michael Feldman

Hi all,

I'm new to the group. I've used Legacy Deluxe 7.5 and Legacy Charting
Deluxe 7.5 for a few years, more intensively in the last few months.

I like the descendant charts.

Two questions. First, how do I create one that shows only blood
descendants, not their spouses? Specifically, I want to show my
grandparents and their eight children, but not the spouses of those
children. When I request a 2-generation chart, I now get 16 boxes on the
second line; I'd like just the 8 children.

Second, how do I request a descendant chart whose generations go
left-to-right instead of top-down?

Thanks in advance!

Fwd: Re: [LegacyUG] Step-children.... in Family Group Sheets

2010-09-08 Thread Michael Feldman
Hi all,

I'm a new Legacy user and just joined the list.

I found the stepchildren thread in the archive, and was able
successfully to set a stepson's status as step. So far so good.

Those parents and stepson are part of a descendants report. In the
report options - descendant chart - include tab, child status is
grayed out, along with lots of other options. I thought perhaps those
were enabled in Legacy Deluxe, so I paid the upgrade fee and installed
it. But they're still grayed out.

I'd also like to indicate divorce situations on that descendant chart,
but marriage status is also grayed out.

Have I missed something somewhere that would turn those options on?

Thanks very much!
