Before completing the unlink command, Legacy displays a window containing the name of the parents and a list of any siblings currently linked to the individual. To Cindy and Cathy: Clarifying--By info I mean those items below the solid line indicating the active person. When clicking above that line the context menu would sometimes appear and sometimes not. When in Media Gallery with *All Pictures selected it seems that the uneditables are ones that may only be highlighted when a different option is selected from the dropdown list in the upper left. A starred item must be selected. There are several options named *Census. How was the list populated? Using the correct option it is then possible to select and caption individual censuses. This is when I go to Wikipedia or Google to have one of them try to show me where the place is. Then transfer those coordinates to Legacy. I will make a lot of use of the Bing satellite views to try to place the pin at the most favorable location. Once I have the location resolved, I will then create a new location with the historical name, prefixed by the current name. When editing the name, I check the box that says do not automatically geocode. Then I go to the present day location, showing the pin where the place is, then move to historical named place and right click the pin to the same place. Then edit the location to remove the prefix new name which I only added so the two places were next to each other in the place list. This may sound confusing, but once you have done it once or twice it becomes easy. And you can figure out shortcuts to the process. I have done 1000s of locations using these techniques. Please note that the Bing maps can give a more precise location than the GeoDB. But the GeoDB is a great tool for assuring that the location name is constructed correctly and all of the parts are spelled correctly. For most US, Canada, and UK locations, the less info you give Bing, the better it does. IE, adding a county will often confuse it. For US, it keys off of City and state. OK? I just entered c 01/1954 without any problem and it converted to cir Jan 1954 cir is just an awful abbreviation as far as I'm concerned so you can see I don't use the c dates much as I haven't altered the display. I have full date checking on. You turn it on again at 5.5 I entered c01/1954 without the space between c and 01 and got a warning. Note you don't need to use the separator when adding dates. I found Sherry's/Support message from 22 Nov 2010 that states she enters the burial information as a Cemetery Event (and her words - and you can do so much more with the Events Report). So when I changed 3 family members burial location to a Cemetery Event and created the report, it shows up as Alpha Name of the individuals and not grouped together by cemetery. If the other person doesn't use the internet, or has a slow connection or limited data allocation, you may be better off burning it all to a CD and sending that to them. I haven't covered everything here, but I'd need to know more about what the other person has at their end to be more specific. Is it possible that it won't open because it never fully closed? When you look under the processes tab in Task Manager is a process called Legacy there? If so terminate it. The error message: (It appears to me to be a Windows error message, rather than a Legacy error.) Legacy Genealogy Software for Windows has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program [Then the only option is to click the button that is part of the message that says...] Close the program I have now tried accessing the program through both of the alternative methods you suggested. Same thing happens each time. I have to be gone this morning, but unless I get the call about my mother, I will try these things in your second paragraph, this afternoon. I know what you are saying except that I don't know what is in the .usr files, so it will be hard for me to know whether I want to keep them or not. Also, when you say that the .usr files can be found in Help and Search for those files, are you talking about searching through the Windows search bar? Or where do I find the Help you are talking about--if it's within the program, I can't get to Help or anything else. Thank you. Thanks. Yes, the error log said: There are 25 Individual record(s) that reference a Preferred Marriage record that does not exist: and enumerated them. After performing the second check as you recommended it showed no errors. Perhaps this is somehow related to the latest release 7.5.0.217. I have Legacy pinned to the taskbar and until now it has opened fine from there. Now, however, a click on the icon gives the message Please wait while Windows configures Roxio Creator Premier 10. I quickly cancel that and Legacy opens as it should. What is causing this? Thanks. We don't know other people's financial situations and I think it is a good thing that a free program exists, that ancestry and some other websites are offered free at libraries, and that familysearch.org does so much and provides so many free materials (including recorded presentations). (3) I am thankful that Legacy offers (and was one of the first to offer) webinars. There have been a number of excellent webinars on a wide variety of topics by well-known genealogists and skilled professionals. Legacy has also given a leg up (so to speak) to some newcomers in the field - I would not be aware of Marian Pierre-Louis otherwise. I hope that Legacy will continue to look to the genealogy community for the next bright stars in genealogy. I am also thankful that the webinars are not all related to the Legacy product but run the gamut of technology, country research, organization, writing and publishing, and all topics in between. (4) In this regard, I will say from experience that putting together a presentation that is informative, entertaining and educational is no mean feat! I put together 3 short presentations for Legacy (hey Geoff - whatever happened to the June 2012 Legacy Idol recording?). It is time-consuming and a bit nerve-racking as you cover the topic and also wonder about questions or comments. I am thankful for the individuals who volunteer and spend the time to put together quality presentations. (5) Is every webinar or presentation a home run - no, but there have been very few occasions when I did not think my attendance was a worthwhile use of my time. I say this having attending many in-person seminars (genealogy, political, legal, photography, etc.) that made me want to do bodily harm to the presenter and his/her PowerPoint presentation. (6) I am thankful that Legacy provides options - you can attend the webinar live and/or watch the recording for 10 days before it is pulled back for sale by CD. This is not the case with others doing webinars (and I get why they need to have the recordings behind their pay-wall). Do I begrudge anyone who is spending the time and effort to put together a presentation to make some money from that effort - NO NOT AT ALL. We all know the value of providing a service. I don't think anyone asks their doctor, lawyer, accountant, plumber, or contractor to work for free - why do we expect teachers or genealogists to do so? (7) I am thankful that there are plenty of opportunities to learn more about Legacy from those who use the product and comment at the forum, the user groups that meet in person or on the web (Legacy Virtual Users' Group monthly hangouts - live and recorded at Google+ that discuss using Legacy), Legacy users who write extensively at their blogs (JL Beeken comes to mind with some great blog posts) - just Google it and you will find all kinds of free learning. (8) Finally I am thankful that the folks who work at Legacy seem very concerned that we get our questions answered timely and (usually) with good cheer. Whenever I have had the need or opportunity to engage with them - in emails, telephone calls, or at vendor halls - I have come away very impressed. I know from my work with the Guild of One-Name Studies that working with a far-flung membership is not easy and working with a product that is used in a variety of ways by people with a variety of tech skill levels is challenging. I have found both Legacy and the Guild do it with good grace. Simply put - there are many companies out there that want our dollars and we have to make decisions how we spend our genealogy budgets. I certainly feel I get more than my money's worth from Legacy and I think if we all give it some thought, we would agree. Geoff you might want to refer to the handouts that seem to have made some webinar viewers testy as a CD extra - whether that is copy of the slides with speaker notes, a reading list, an outline, or a worksheet.
