RE: [LegacyUG] Why don't I receive emails?

2015-11-17 Thread gregandlaurel
I don’t receive emails either, but I think it is a good thing! I can access
the Mail Archives at my leisure to read all new emails, and I don’t have to
deal with dozens in my inbox. I can also correspond with the Usergroup if
needed. A win, win in my mind! Laurel

Re: [LegacyUG] LFT under Linux?

2015-11-06 Thread gregandlaurel
Just a quick comment about Windows 10 and Legacy. My 6 year old laptop on
Windows 7 had been freezing and crashing several times a day - especially in
Legacy. About 3 weeks ago I installed Windows 10 and my freezing/crashing
issues totally disappeared. The only problem I have noticed in Legacy since
the Windows 10 install is that I sometimes get hung up in the Name Index - I
have to use Task Mgr to close the program, but this only happens
occasionally. I feel like I have a brand new computer! ~Laurel

RE: [LegacyUG] unsupported file format

2015-09-02 Thread gregandlaurel
I use IrfanView – a free program. You can save a PDF as a jpg, tiff, whatever.
Or visa versa. Lots of options. I just make a copy of the picture or document
and work from that. You can also resize documents easily.

[LegacyUG] illegible data

2015-07-22 Thread gregandlaurel
I would simply enclose the missing information in square brackets and
question mark:

... enlisted 181[?]

or if you think you know what the illegible date is, but are not positive:

... enlisted 18[13?]

I don't think it needs to be followed with explanation. Laurel

RE: [LegacyUG] Possible glitch in programming

2015-06-16 Thread gregandlaurel
Hi Jenny, I have this exact same problem. I thought I had fixed the glitch
after trying several things – but in the last couple of days the issue is
back. In addition to the text glitch, the event pictures (in some
situations) are overlapping on top of each other. Quite a messy report
result. Laurel

[LegacyUG] Informant Event Definition?

2015-06-07 Thread gregandlaurel
Hi Rob, I think adding or not adding the date of the event in addition to
the date of registration is a personal choice. I like to include both. My
event sentence format is different than yours, but here is a Birth Informant
event from my file:

1886 Feb 15 - Birth Informant - Annie registered the Dec 28, 1885, birth of
her daughter Charlotte with the Superintendent Registrar's District of
Swansea in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales.¹

and under the daughter Charlotte's events, I would have a Birth Registration
event:

1886 Feb 15 - Birth Registration - Charlotte's mother Annie was her birth
informant registering the event with the Superintendent Registrar's District
of Swansea, Registrar's Sub-District of Swansea in Swansea, Glamorgan,
Wales.¹

I wouldn't refer to the birthdate in the daughter's event because I would
have a separate Birth Event just prior to the Birth Registration event.

[LegacyUG] Newest Update - Pictures

2015-05-27 Thread gregandlaurel
I am seeing several issues with pictures since the update. In both Desc and
Ancestor reports, some pictures are on top of each other. For example, a
picture of my mother is partially covered by a picture of someone else. On some
reports there are 2 or 3 instances of this. Also, some of the captions under
these piled up pictures are also piled on top of each other (so unreadable). In
the Individual and Family reports, the captions are missing from event pictures
altogether. The option to include captions is greyed out. I think we used to be
able to include captions? In Picture Centre, I can’t get any Attached Pictures
to show. Also, one other item not related to pictures, when I hit the Indiv or
Family Report button it goes immediately to a preview of the report – it skips
the part where you could select preview, print, report options etc... This
actually doesn’t bother me as I usually use these 2 reports to just review data
I have entered, but I thought I would mention it. Is anyone else having these
issues? Laurel

[LegacyUG] Newest Update - Pictures

2015-05-27 Thread gregandlaurel
Thanks for responding Leon and Cathy. Leon, the picture reset didn’t work, but
I did find out what the problem was. For some reason the update changed the
location of my media files (Customize – Locations - Default Location of Media
Files). I changed it back to the correct location and now Picture Centre and
Reports are working normally. I have no idea why my reports were still
including the correct pictures, but just in a muddled piled up way. It was very
strange.

Cathy – yes I am accessing reports thru My Toolbar so thanks for explaining
that going straight to preview is a requested feature not a bug. I actually
like it as I only use those reports for a quick check of data I am entering –
making sure it looks good! Laurel

[LegacyUG] Fw: Latest Build Issues

2015-02-17 Thread gregandlaurel
So no one has had the below issue after the latest build? Sorry, I just
noticed that I referred to the symbol that has replaced the periods in
Reports as 2 horizontal lines – not sure where my head was, but it should be
2 VERTICAL lines. I just did a google search and it is called a vertical
broken bar (or double vertical broken bar in my situation). I have since
noticed that this only happens to Events in Reports. Even if I go and delete
the event and re-enter a new event with the same wording, the vertical
broken bar shows up in the same place when I run a Report. For example, the
abbreviation St. -- anywhere that I have referred to St. Paul's Cathedral,
or St. John, the period is removed and the broken bar symbol is in it's
place. If I go to the event and delete the period, the Report looks fine.
If I go back and add the period, the broken bar symbol is back in the
Report. The broken bar symbol is also replacing periods between sentences.
How do I report this to Legacy? Thanks for your help. Laurel
__
I just downloaded version 8.0.0.467 and have come across the following after
the update: 1) Additional spaces between words were added to my transcribed
sources under the Text of Source screen in Master Sources. About 25% of my
sources were affected. The extra spaces were just random – anywhere from an
additional one to 5 spaces between words. (Eg: a BronzeMemorial has
beeninstalled). I was able to go in and delete all these added spaces –
it was just time consuming to have to do so. 2) Anything that was bolded
was particularly affected - there were extra spaces before and after many
bolded words. But after removing the extra spacing around bolded words and
saving, the extra spacing would come back. I actually had to change the
words from bold to normal to be able to remove the extra spaces. If I tried
to rebold the word afterwards, the extra spacing would come back. 3) In
reports – Indiv., Family, Ancestor Desc., in random places the period and
any spaces around the period, have been replaced by 2 horizontal lines.
(Eg: Married in the Anglican Church of St||Paul’s||Witnesses were
Sally). The horizontal lines have a break in the middle, but I don’t
have the symbol on my keyboard to show you. I have ran a Check/Repair,
Compact File and booted my computer, but these issues are still there. I can
live without the bolded words, but the reports don’t look too pretty with
the missing spaces and || in place of periods. Is anyone else noticing this?

[LegacyUG] Repeating Source Pictures/Documents on Reports

2014-09-22 Thread gregandlaurel
Hi, I subscribed about a week ago, but I am not receiving any emails. I
see a question I posted shows on the usergroup and I was hoping someone
could help me with it. Here it is again:

I just recently upgraded to Legacy 8 and I use the Basic System for sources.
I have a 2 part issue: firstly, does ibid not work? Under Customize
Legacy - Sources, Section 7.8 it says Use ibid for repeating Master Sources
(this only applies to Basic-Style sources). I have this ticked, but so far
this has failed to work on all types of reports. The 2nd part is that I
like to attach a jpg picture of documents to the Master Source. The
picture always appears twice on reports - once with the first Full Citation
and then again with the subsequent citation (hence my question about ibid).
Is there anyway to only have the picture appear with the first citation.
Twice is overkill. I have gone through and tried numerous things with
report options, but nothing works. My reports printed fine with the older
version of Legacy that I was previously using. Any advice would be
appreciated. Thanks.
