[LegacyUG] Reinstall legacy

2014-03-16 Thread rfalz...@yahoo.com
Hello
Here is a question for all the savvy computer techs.

My computer died yesterday but before it did I got everything backed up to my
external hard drive.

If I replace my hard drive do I just copy and paste all my files back to my
computer?

When I re load legacy from my external hard drive will it still be deluxe? Or
do I need a password to reinstate the deluxe version?

Thanks
Rich

Number 1 rule of backup:  If you can't restore, it isn't a backup.

From your message, it is difficult to tell if you have a full computer backup
or just copies of some of the files.  A full computer backup should be useful
in restoring everything that you had on the computer to the time when the
backup was made.  If you only have copies of some files, then you will have to
re-install the computer operating system and programs followed by copying the
files back to where they will be accessible by the software.

Re: [LegacyUG] Reinstall legacy

2014-03-16 Thread Wendy Howard
Your Legacy Customer Number is stored in a file somewhere on the
computer. Whether you have included that in your backup, and whether
that file is restored, is another matter.

Regardless of that, when you get your new computer up and running if I
were you I would go to the Legacy web site and download a fresh copy of
the program, rather than restoring a backup of it. That way you get the
latest release, installed the way it's meant to be.

(I know that a good backup/image should be able to restore the system
fully, but I do not have the knowledge/skills to do that myself and be
sure of the outcome. As always the old adage your mileage may be
different applies, but the fact that Rich is asking these questions
says he probably doesn't, either.)

Once you've done that, and restored your data files, open Legacy and see
if your Deluxe number is there or not. If not, put it in the right
place, and you're away laughing once again.

If you don't know your Deluxe number and can't find it anywhere, contact
Legacy Support and they will be able to help you.

Hope this helps. :-)

Rich,

How and with what did you backup your hard drive? I only know that a lot
of backups are not complete enough to just copy to another hard drive
and have the system operate as it did.

Good chance you will need to install all your software, Windows, Legacy,
etc., from scratch, and update all of them, then restore your Legacy
data by using the Legacy program, or copying the Legacy data files into
the new installation.

Be sure you have anti-virus software running as soon as possible!
