https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/commit/e9444ad6474543fe70f78e041227d100938deacb
macport for lensfun should now provide that upgrade script again.
hopefully our next darktable DMG will contain it.

As Roman said, it's of course all a question of available resources.
Judging from the expectation level of a "normal" (Linux) user I'd assume
that they would profit from more frequent releases. That's what most
applications do if they have something new. I would not call myself a
normal user but it has been before today that I realized something like
lensfun-update-data does exist :)

Will see what is the reason in this case.
But there is python3 on osx.

As for the general question, both ways seem nice, and both are limited by
the free time available.

No, i understand that. My comment was more about "AFAIK there is no
Windows application with Lensfun support, yet."

Roman and Ulrich, what is your opinion as an application developer how
Lensfun can help to solve this problem?

Is it necessary to improve the database update scripts? Or do you prefer
to have frequent releases with an updated database?

Well, not working means that the scripts are not prepared for a Windows
folder structure and Python is not available on Windows by default.

Doesn't seem that they are supported well on Linux either. Here with
openSUSE 13.2:

Traceback (most recent call last):
   File "/usr/bin/lensfun-update-data", line 46, in
 import lensfun
ImportError: No module named 'lensfun'

There is no lensfun.py in neither of my installed packages:

lensfun-devel-0.3.2-26.1.x86_64
lensfun-doc-0.3.2-26.1.x86_64
lensfun-data-0.3.2-26.1.noarch
liblensfun0-0.3.1-12.1.x86_64
liblensfun1-0.3.2-26.1.x86_64

darktable on osx.

There is no python3, at least not in macports, so naturally, the
script does not work.

Yes, that would only make sense for packaging Windows or OSX
applications. Linux users should use the update scripts. That's why I
would prefer this option.

That's what we were thinking. Maybe Alexander can be a bit more specific
about which platform he is working on and which application was missing
support for the updates?

I think that the scripts are not working on Windows, but AFAIK there is
no Windows application with Lensfun support, yet.

So each app that uses lensfun should bundle it?
JFYI distributions really don't like such bundling, *especially* fedora...

Doesn't that contradict the reasoning for NOT updating lens db for non-master?
