You could also have just launched with:
SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk libreoffice
SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen libreoffice
This is experimental still: SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3 libreoffice

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 98947] New: PIVOTTABLE: Drilling after sorting returns unsorted "drill" results

2016-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98947

Bug ID: 98947
Summary: PIVOTTABLE: Drilling after sorting returns unsorted
"drill" results
   Product: LibreOffice
   Version: 5.1.1.2 rc
  Hardware: x86-64 (AMD64)
OS: Linux (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: medium
 Component: Calc
  Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
  Reporter: data...@gmail.com

Created attachment 123910
  --> https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/attachment.cgi?id=123910=edit
Sort this by postcode count descending, then drill on the top number.

If you do a simple PIVOTTABLE with a list of indices and a count (for eg) and
then sort the count (either direction) and then drill into, for eg, the one
with the greatest count, you will get the result for a different field.

Initially the results I was seeing in the drill down were for the unsorted
indices, but now I see random results.

Make the constants into an enum, and use the enum in the GetAttribs

When I use a highlighting color in a text and I send the text to persons who
use Microsoft "Word", they can't take out easily the color, as I could do it in
my text.

Would it be possible to fix this so that "Open Writer" would be compatible with
Microsoft "Word" on this element.

Thanks a lot!

With "Open Writer", there is no "Edit / Review mode". It is very difficult to
edit a text written by another person so that he can see clearly my corrections
in the text.

With Microsoft "Word" I used very often that "Edit/review" fonction. My added
words in the text were indicated automatically with a different color for the
characters and the text I removed as well as my commentaries were indicated
with the same color in the margin. When a third person added further
modifications, these were written automatically with another color in the text;
the same color was applied in the margin, indicating the text he had removed or
his commentaries.

So, it was quite easy for a group to edit a text.

I hope someday this function will be available in Open Writer, otherwise I will
have to go back using Microsoft "Word".

I would like to add the following: When I open Writer it shows the "Properties"
sidebar, which for 80% of functionality repeats the toolbar. For me personally
"Styles and Formatting" are much more necessary and frequently used, and it
would be nice if the last used selection is remembered, so that is shows up
when document is opened.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 95233] UI: Use of STYLE() in conditional formatting results in continuous CPU usage

2016-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=95233

So the reason that I think that the bug is actually to allow STYLE in
conditional formatting is that conditional formatting functions are expected to
be side-effect free. The whole conditional formatting code is more or less
based around that idea.
Additionally it is absolutely an implementation detail how and when conditional
formatting rules are evaluated. Take as an example a conditional format formula
like STYLE("style1", 10, "style2") which does not what users would expect as it
would constantly apply style1. Even if we would change the code and fix the
loop that makes it constantly apply style1 it would immediately need to repaint
when we apply style2 and (as part of the implementation detail) evaluate the
conditional format formula which would force it to apply style1.

IMHO there are good reasons that something like this is not possible in MSO.
Our conditional format code is already way too complicated because of some
missing restrictions and I think restricting the use of STYLE would be a sane
one.

I still need to sleep one night and maybe talk to Eike or Kohei about it but at
least in my opinion it is the way to go.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 98942] New: =sum() does not work with =fixed()

2016-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98942

Bug ID: 98942
Summary: =sum() does not work with =fixed()
   Product: LibreOffice
   Version: 5.1.1.2 rc
  Hardware: x86 (IA32)
OS: Linux (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: medium
 Component: Calc
  Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
  Reporter: joo...@gmail.com

Created attachment 123907
  --> https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/attachment.cgi?id=123907=edit
bug is shown by example

The summation =sum() does not work combined with the =fixed() function. It
works fine for normal numbers.

When =fixed() is used to give a number with a fixed amount of decimals, the
=sum() function does not recognize the number anymore and does not sum it up.

The strange part is that adding the fixed numbers DOES work and give a good
result.
So in case A1 to A3 are =fixed(1,2), this results in =A1+A2+A3 equals 3,
whereas =sum(A1:A3) equals 0.

see example file.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 98941] New: Selecting Spell Checking language has no effect

2016-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98941

Bug ID: 98941
Summary: Selecting Spell Checking language has no effect
   Product: LibreOffice
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: Windows (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: medium
 Component: Draw
  Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
  Reporter: henpe...@gmail.com

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:47.0) Gecko/20100101
Firefox/47.0
Build Identifier: LibreOffice 5.0.5.2

After I installed a French dictionary (the top result from the available
dictionaries), it worked fine on Writer, but it seems to have no effect on
Draw.
The new dictionary didn't show up on the menu for spell-checking languages
until I set French on the options as the default language for new documents.
But now, even if I select it, it takes no effect on the existing document.
New documents are created with French as default for the spell-check, but
trying to change it to english has no effect, so it's probably not this
specific dictionary's fault.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install french dictionary
http://extensions.libreoffice.org/extension-center/dictionnaires-francais
2. Create a new Draw document. Add text and elements with text.
3. Try to change the spell-checking language
Actual Results:
The attempt to change the language has no visible effect on the document.
Right-click spell suggestions SEEM to change accordingly (inconsistent).

Expected Results:
The spell-checking should change the language it uses to highlight errors on
the document.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 98931] Insert images into cells in Calc

Sorry, one can equally question if your proposed usage of Calc is how a
spreadsheet is intended to function?

All else aside, LibreOffice Calc and its spreadsheet documents are intended to
be compliant with current ODF standards, in particular ODF 1.2 for Spreadsheet
Documents with rich data structures and methods, including increased use of the
OpenCL API, for supporting the manipulation of numerical cell content and
formulas.

That compliance sets our scope of function and is the only "direction" and core
functionality that Calc must support--in truth the project has no need for Calc
to do anything more than behave as a spreadsheet document editor and user
environment.

Standards allow OLE content holding other ODF to be embedded into a cell
(charts, graphs, even Draw images), as well as image/graphics can be
embedded/linked to a cell. But the table structure of the spreadsheet is
primarily to hold textual and numerical data for manipulation based on the
content of cells.

All else: Cells, Rows, Columns and Pages can be formatted by style, or direct
formatting, for display of text or numerical content and formula results.
Add to that styling for printing and report generation rounds out the
functional requirements for LibreOffice Calc. Handling of images and OLE
objects is limited to the styling that can be applied to their frame
container--that is the scope we are obliged to support. And that alone is the
scope of development and "direction" of Calc.

In other words, Calc is *not* an image/graphic display environment and will
likely never be made one in the sense you propose.

Not saying it could not be done, but it would be out of scope for what a
Spreadsheet document is intended to be from the projects perspective.

Again, IMHO believe that LibreOffice Base and the OpenDocument Database Front
End Document Format (ODB), of the OASIS ODF 1.2 standard, is the only correct
way of populating styled Table reports holding and manipulating images and
their metadata. Manipulation of that image data does not belong in a Calc
spreadsheet.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 98618] LO hangs

2016-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98618

Needing to solve the problem, I uninstalled all the pgms I had recently
installed, unfortunately without result.
I repeat that no scan detected malware (AVG, MS Windows Malicious Software
Removal Tool, DISM.exe/Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth, SFC /SCANNOW,
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe).

In the absence of alternatives I restarted from a previous backup/image and
step-by-step reinstalled all the pgms I had lost except for
Advanced Pdf to Word Converter
(http://download.cnet.com/Advanced-PDF-to-Word-Converter/3000-10743_4-10900586.html)
and PDF sam Basic (https://github.com/torakiki/pdfsam/releases) and its
corequisite Java 8 Update 73 (https://www.java.com/it/download/:
both them were running fine but I don't need.

I then performed a clean boot without encountering problems.
Finally now LO is working regularly.

Therefore is it logical to assume some incompatibilities with some of pgms not
reinstalled? perhaps Java or PDFtoWord?
At the moment, having lost a lot of time, I do not dare to do other tests at
the risk of destabilizing the PC again.
If, by analyzing the documentation provided, you spot some cause, let me know.
Thanks anyway.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 98940] New: -1 Max length Multiline Input Text Box form controls are no longer editable, and max length is way less than the textbox can handle

2016-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98940

Bug ID: 98940
Summary: -1 Max length Multiline Input Text Box form controls
are no longer editable, and max length is way less
than the textbox can handle
   Product: LibreOffice
   Version: 5.1.1.3 release
  Hardware: x86-64 (AMD64)
OS: Linux (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: medium
 Component: Base
  Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
  Reporter: cont...@anthracitelaw.com

Previously I could set max size to -1 on multiline input text boxes and the box
would still be usable and editable, up to an arbitrary length (I know it worked
well to at least about 57k chars before, because I used it to input and edit
that much text without issues in previous versions, at least up to around 4.0
or 4.3 or so). Now, I can do that but the box is readable but not editable
with a -1 maximum length, unless it has a nonzero maximum size.

It's pretty easy to reproduce, any multi line input text box with max length of
-1 is uneditable as far as I can tell, even a text box that's part of a table
control.

The issue only affects multi line input text boxes, and not single line input
text boxes. Single line text boxes still work great with a max length of -1.

The maximum maximum size is 32767, which is way too small. (This may or may
not be different than before, I always used -1 before). Anything higher is not
allowed when I go to the form control properties field and try to set the
maximum size higher.

I don't think it matters, but I'm using a MariaDB backend, using the MySQL
connector. (It works single line input, but not multiline input, even on the
same field in the same form at the same time, so it's hard to imagine that the
connector could be the problem, otherwise it would probably fail single line
input too).

I'm using the version of libreoffice in debian jessie backports,
1:5.1.1-1~bpo8+1.

1) Please fix the regression, and make -1 max length multiline input text boxes
editable at arbitrary length again like it was before. I think this is by far
the best solution. Any other solution would break a lot of people's forms,
including mine.

2) (Should also be done in addition to (1)) You should also probably nake the
maximum maximum length (not a typo) a lot longer, say the length of a
MEDIUMTEXT, or at least as long as your current textbox class can take which is
clearly much more than 32k based on past experience. I know the text box can
handle more, because it did previously, so even if the length of a mediumtext
is too high, 32767 isn't nearly enough.

Thanks for your hard work, I love base!

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 75826] Conditional Formats using STYLE(...) suck cpu when doing "nothing"

2016-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=75826

Hi Marcus,

Would you please post more about why this is a user error (or unreasonable
use)?
I read your comment#7 in bug 95233, but don't yet understand why STYLE() in a
conditional format is inherently a problem.

You said "Now as STYLE changes the cell we of course need to recalculate the
conditional format again"

... Yes, that would be true if the cell kept changing. The problem is that
infinite re-calculation keeps happening even when the cell does NOT change
value, i.e., after all cells have reached the intended steady state. That's
the bug as I understand it.

Thanks,

-Jim

When reporting a bug you should "Write the expected behavior and the actual
behavior", per https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/BugReport
Here there's no expected behavior, so: how else could this be done and why?
Maybe page number or header/footer shouldn't be printed at all.
I tried MSO, it doesn't let you print selection from multiple pages.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 98931] Insert images into cells in Calc

2016-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98931

Hi Stuart, thanks for your comment. Thank you for correcting the type to
"enhancement".

I disagree that an SQL database is somehow a replacement for LibreOffice. There
is obviously no way to use a database the same way you would use a desktop
application, a lot of features are missing, let alone ones specific to Calc. If
you say "but you could build a GUI", to this I can say, why implement any
features, if everything could be built in assembler? An SQL database isn't even
far fetched.

I see your point with regards to file formats. This does however fall under
"stuff is not implemented so let's not implement stuff". If you have a
prerogative to absolutely never implement features unless they are portable via
ODF, then I question that prerogative and would like to challenge it with
whomever is responsible for that.

"Insert image" is not sufficient. I'll quote the original post below:
> when you resize or sort data the images don't follow the data, since an image
> anchored to B3 will always be anchored to B3, even if the data moved down to
> B12. Second of all, I can't easily resize the image to look at it in detail.

Or in other words this does not implement list points 2-10 from the original
post.

Is this a legitimate core requirement? You have not supported your argument
other than say "our data format is not flexible" and "here are a few things you
could try" (which don't work). I believe it remains to be shown if it's not. My
argument is that it is, because I need it when I use Calc, and the same feature
has been requested by a multitude of people over time. It's not even a
completely new feature. It's just fixing the "insert image" feature to make it
actually usable beyond what it is now (it is useless). It's there, so someone
already committed to it being in Calc, what remains is for the feature to
become complete.

Running latest Fedora 23 with Gnome 3 using the open source nvidia drivers

When adding a video ( mkv in this case ), the video was bigger than the
presentation screen. The video I was using was 1080p and my presentation was
set up as 16:9. The video offsets for top and left were negative values and
the width and height were greater than the size of the presentation screen.
When playing the slide from design mode the video played ok. Playing in
presentation mode crashes gnome-shell.

When I resized the video layout to fit the presentation screen, everything
worked great.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 85264] RFE: computed conditional formatting

2016-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=85264

Comment added to bugt 95233:

What I usually do for cells with formulas is

=a1+b2+STYLE(LOOKUP(CURRENT(), FooRanges, FooStyles)

where FooRanges and FooStyles might be adjacent columns that look something
like this (this is an actual example -- number of meters I've rowed in a
session, to be precise):

0blank
1slow
1000default
2000slow1
4000200
5000158
6000155
70001525
8000151
1150
12000149
15000148
17000147
2146
21097145nb

23000fast
24000fast1
25000fast2
26000fast3
27000fast4
28000fast5

I'd like to be able to do this for text entry cells, but easily change the
breakpoints (which are used elsewhere) without having to change both the lookup
table and the conditional formatting (which won't even work in this case due to
the number of ranges).

Reopening 85264 would be one way of handling this.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 95233] UI: Use of STYLE() in conditional formatting results in continuous CPU usage

2016-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=95233

I think that actually _using_ STYLE() inside of conditional formatting is a
strange thing to do. What I'm trying to do, though, is as ddescribed in bug
85264:

"Request the ability to apply the format returned by a formula. This is in
essence like the STYLE() function, except applied via conditional formatting
rather than by explicit use of STYLE().

"Use case: applying a style to manually entered data. For example, a formula
that returns a named style based on the year of an entered date (perhaps by
means of LOOKUP()) would have the style applied by conditional formatting to
the entered cell.

"The date method of conditional formatting is not appropriate for this case;
the basic conditional formatting could be used, but only up to 10 years (or
other ranges). It's also less flexible, because the formula to be used for the
computed conditional format could actually be a name; editing the value of the
name changes the formula, which would allow the computed style to be changed
easily everywhere."

Conditional formatting will not work for this case because I have more than 10
possible styles to apply. In addition, I'd like the style to be the result of
a formula, which I can change on the fly, rather than a purely static list or
one of the limited options provided by conditional formatting.

What I usually do for cells with formulas is

=a1+b2+STYLE(LOOKUP(CURRENT(), FooRanges, FooStyles)

where FooRanges and FooStyles might be adjacent columns that look something
like this (this is an actual example -- number of meters I've rowed in a
session, to be precise):

0blank
1slow
1000default
2000slow1
4000200
5000158
6000155
70001525
8000151
1150
12000149
15000148
17000147
2146
21097145nb
22000143
23000fast
24000fast1
25000fast2
26000fast3
27000fast4
28000fast5

I'd like to be able to do this for text entry cells, but easily change the
breakpoints (which are used elsewhere) without having to change both the lookup
table and the conditional formatting (which won't even work in this case due to
the number of ranges).

Reopening 85264 would be one way of handling this.

(In reply to cheater00 from comment #0)
> I would like to be able to view images in Calc which are located inside
> cells. As simple as that.

Well, lets see. For starters this would be an Enhancement. Not a bug in any
sense.

Cells can in fact hold images, a simple Insert. But default is to anchor to
sheet (page) --so need to change to anchor to cell for any formatting or
styling of the frame holding the image. Then the image does stay with the cell
with any reformatting or sort.

The frame takes a table:end-cell-address (when anchored to cell), and the image
is either held as binary or as a link.

What is admittedly missing is any handling of a cell's ()
and content as anything more than a rendered image.

What you fail to understand is that this is driven not by LibreOffice
requirements, but instead by requirements in the ODF 1.2 standard as to
function of an OpenDocument Spreadsheet Document the container for Calc
documents we create.

There are several ways the Exif and other meta details of a source image could
be incorporated into cell attributes--but none are specified in ODF 1.2. There
is no established format meaning anything done for LibreOffice
would not transition to other ODF processors. Even if we extend the .ODS
container for our use, we'd be making an interoperability issue.

Also, most of your use case is already more correctly handled in a database
with SQL column to hold BLOB and meta data of images.

So is this even really a legitimate core requirement? I'd have to say no.

When printing slide handouts, Impress refuses to print in portrait orientation,
even though the page payout for the handouts specifies portrait orientation.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open Impress, create a new presentation.
2. Create 1 or more slides.
3. Switch to "Handout Master" view.
4. Go to Slide -> Page/Slide Properties to confirm that the page orientation is
set to portrait.
5. Go to File -> Print and choose to print "Handouts" from the "Document"
drop-down list.

The print preview will continue to show landscape orientation, as will the
actual printout. This is not a printer-specific issue, because even if I
"Print to file", the output is still incorrect.

Thanks!

I'm not yet sure if that is a bug or an user error.

STYLE applies a style to the cell while the conditional format wants to apply
one as well. Now as STYLE changes the cell we of course need to recalculate the
conditional format again.

Honestly right now I believe that using STYLE inside of conditional formats is
a bad idea and see no reason to fix this problem. I would need to see a valid
use case that actually does something that can't be done through adding a
conditional format.

Currently if I would do anything it would be to make using STYLE in a
conditional format an error. I'll remove the regression and perf keyword as I
think we don't have a bug around here.

The issue is still not resolved. The cursor position still doesn't reflect
where it actually is. I am using a custom defined text style and it seems to
happen there. If it looks like the cursor is after a word and I hit the space

Still no crash here.
I give up, hope someone will be luckier than me.
Since I got no other questions here, I'll put back to UNCONFIRMED.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 98918] Crash - Bug in Footer handling - Page formatting

2016-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98918

Receipe (I've here a german version - maybe the translation is not absolutely
correct!):
-> Open document
-> Change to 2-sided view (one sees two pages for a better comparison)
-> Goto ~ Page 4
-> Goto the footer with mouse and wait until the blue tab is appearing
-> Right mouseclick on a left page: Format footer
Don't use dynamic distances and don't use left-right the same footer
-> Change distance between footer and text (e.g. from 0.5cm to 2.5 cm on one
side

And sometimes there's no reaction.
BUT if one checks out there's 2.5cm in thew menue.
OR now I have the case: left footer is changed in menue, but the other footer
changing distance.

The point is, if you select a very large number of cells, and then paste, then
LO Calc doesn't warn you that LO is going to be down for several minutes, if
not hours. It may appear to crash.

LO consuming 100%CPU and failing to update menus, window content

I think I have been observing the same bug. I do not have a clear idea how to
trigger it, but it is related to pasting content and then formatting fonts etc.
via right-click menu.

Observed behaviour - LO starts to consume 100% CPU and fails to refresh window
content. Resizing window helps a bit, still menus and dialogs come up blank,
including right click menu. Text selection is not visible but works. Only way
out is to restart LO. As I do not observe similar problems with other Gtk
applications, it should be LO bug.

I was trying to get some reasonable backtrace, but it doesn't seem good to me:

more specifically: Search for format breaks seems not to work either.
Edit / find & replace / other options format / text flow Breaks /
This submenue seems to be inactive / not selectable.
I couldn't find a way to search for the manually inserted (page-) breaks

As a testcase a attach "LoremIpsum_break-hh.odt" (created with Writer 5.0.5.2
pasting unformatted text from attachment "Lorem Ipsum, italic manually.odt" and
inserting a manual break prior to Duis autem, to start page 4.
Is there a display option to show manual breaks (not just by beginning a new

Did you find a precise step-by-step process to reproduce the crash.

Just to be sure, crash are only on Windows or did you have some on Linux?

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 95591] Autosave appears not to be working

2016-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=95591

Thanks, Alex. Ubuntu's apport, when I tried to report the bug, said it
couldn't because various packages needed updating. I ran Synaptic, and 30 mins
later all was done, and I restarted just LO, not the whole machine,
fortunately. While waiting, I made notes as best I could and then spent the
next hour trying to remember and redo the changes as best I could.

So, thanks for the tip. Yes, I found the relevant doc and copied it and
renamed it, and it does have most of the work. So I can compare to what I did,
"Bare brained", so probably I won't have lost much, except very precious time.

Anyway, thanks for your advice, it will be really useful.

I hope you can persuade someone to increase the priority of attending to this
bug, however.

Thanks again.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 98931] New: Insert images into cells in Calc

2016-03-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98931

Bug ID: 98931
Summary: Insert images into cells in Calc
   Product: LibreOffice
   Version: 5.1.1.3 release
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: medium
 Component: Calc
  Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
  Reporter: cheate...@gmail.com

I would like to be able to view images in Calc which are located inside cells.
As simple as that.

This is an actual need, I am not making this up, so don't close as "not needed"
or "works for me". If you do, it'll show you don't necessarily care about what
your users need and instead would like to push Calc in the direction of your
own vision of what Calc should be. Currently Calc missing this functionality
has me and others like me relegated to ugly hacks (see below), Google
Spreadsheets, or a myriad of web-based solutions cobbled together from
Wordpress or Drupal. This shouldn't be necessary for legitimate uses of a
spreadsheet. This functionality can do a lot for Calc, from enabling uses of
Calc that are perfectly natural for the users (and are already being done by
inferior, kludgy web software), to drawing the attention of skilled minds and
developers in the Machine Learning and Computer Vision communities.

I will describe the functionality I'd like below, but first let's dispell the
myth that this feature is not necessary in Calc. Here are reasons people have
cited for not implementing this feature over the years:

Q: Calc cells are for data. Images are not data. / Calc is not Writer. It does
not need pretty images.
A: Calc needs images. I have a spreadsheet of physical things and when I have
to pick it up from storage I need to know what it looks like, because that's
what I search for. I am not going to describe them like "small round object
with green sides and a blue dot" just because I can't have images. Or let's say
I have a list of people who are working with me, I would like to see the
picture of the person so they're not just faceless numbers on a list and I can
immediately associate the data to who they are. Or maybe display stock tickers
on a spreadsheet of stocks. Myself, I would like to see how much items are
currently being sold for on the internet, so I would make graphs of that, to
see trends and buy/sell smart. Images are data. Calc is NOT a programming
language. If you think "data" only means text, then you are terribly wrong.
Calc is made for usage by humans, and images carry a lot of information for
humans, information which can NOT be replaced by text information. Calc is for
data, and calc is for humans, therefore it should display data for humans, and
that means images too.

Q: Calc cannot make meaningful use of image data.
A: So implement features like this as well rather than go "stuff is not
implemented so let's not implement stuff". Examples: search/sort by color, by
EXIF data, by aspect ratio. Ability to access the bitmap from the scripting
language to perform machine learning algorithms. Ability to modify bitmap data
to display visualizations. For example, LO already has the ability to run
JavaScript. With a place to output images we could have d3.js visualizations
associated to our row or column data in a meaningful way. We could have
location data displayed as an *actual map* in the cell. We could have addresses
displayed beside street view photos of them to help finding them.

Q: Add an image and anchor it to a cell.
A: Doesn't work for me. First of all it's very fiddly. Most importantly, when
you resize or sort data the images don't follow the data, since an image
anchored to B3 will always be anchored to B3, even if the data moved down to
B12. Second of all, I can't easily resize the image to look at it in detail.
Also, the functionality often doesn't work, images get distorted, get resized
improperly, or don't show up at all. When you save and re-open the document,
they get shifted around and you don't know what cell they were assigned to
before.

Q: Use a comment. Put it in the background, and edit its formatting options.
A: Doesn't work for me. Even though sorting makes images move around together
with the data, it's still pretty crappy. First of all, I can't easily resize
the cell to get a larger image to see it better. Second of all, the amount of
manual work you have to do is huge. I need to add a comment, add some text
inside it, exit the comment, right click the comment, select the background
options, create a new bitmap, import it, then resize the comment, move it into
the cell, and resize the cell, then move the comment into the background. When
resizing the comment I need to get it just right because this ugly hack makes
the image tile and I need the image once only. Additionally, since *none* of
the images I have on disk will be the right size, I will have to resize the
image in an external

I have switched off the Open CL and this made no difference, the corruption
still occurs.

This is reliably replicated by saving the sheet, closing it, re-opening it and
then changing cell B3.
