 Component: Calc
  Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
  Reporter: so...@web.de

Description:
LO crashes often by normale usage.
mostly I only use calc, so I'm nbiot able to tell if it crash also with
writer/draw etc.

as soon as I have activated skia, I notice the performance advantage, I also
need...
I only have to expect LO to crash 3-6 times in a working day.
The crash occurs when I quickly switch between my three screens or within a
large file in the registers or when I scroll quickly and perform a mouse click
at the same time. Sometimes it just happens when I change a cell, I could not
really provoke or reproduce the error.

since which version.

I am pretty sure that this one is not Skia, but Hardware Acceleration related:

Follow https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=152641#c7 Steps
10-12
Now you have Unchecked Hardware Acc., Anti Alias. and Skia

21. Open Example file, for Presentation mode
» Gradient lost
22.
23. Menu Tools ˋOptions → View → Check both Skia options → [OK] → Restart LibOˊ
24. Open Example file, for Presentation mode
» Gradient still lost 
  SKIA doesn't any change

31. Follow https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=152641#c7
 Steps 10-14
» Hardware Acc. now is active
32. Open Example file, for Presentation mode
» Gradient works fine 
33. Menu Tools ˋOptions → View → Check both Skia options → [OK] → Restart LibOˊ
34. Open Example file, for Presentation mode
» Gradient lost
35. Menu Tools ˋOptions → View → Unceck both Skia options → [OK] → Restart
LibOˊ
36. Open Example file, for Presentation mode
» Gradient works fine 

So I currently think that not not Skia is the root of the problem, but that
Sika disables Hardware Acceleration..

> But lets say this being different until proven otherwise.

Yes, you are right, my explication was a little short.

Although my knowledge is very basic, I am pretty sure sure that they are
related. Please
10. Launch LibO (Start Center)
11. Menu ˋTools → Options → View → Uncheck "Use Hardware Acceleration" → Use
anti aliasing" → Uncheck "Use Skia"ˊ
12. Quit and Relaunch LibO
13. Menu ˋTools → Options → View → Check "Use Hardware Acceleration" (if not
yet checkedˊ
14. Quit and Relaunch LibO
15. Uncheck "Use Hardware Acceleration"
16. Check "Use Skia ..."
   » You will see that
"Use Hardware Acceleration" becomes greyed out
Unexpectedly checkmark "Use Hardware Acceleration" appears ⁉

(16) might indicate that there is a relation between Skia and Hardware
acceleration.
But I'm still not sure whether we already have collected all aspects.

Dear almos,

To make sure we're focusing on the bugs that affect our users today,
LibreOffice QA is asking bug reporters and confirmers to retest open, confirmed
bugs which have not been touched for over a year.

There have been thousands of bug fixes and commits since anyone checked on this
bug report. During that time, it's possible that the bug has been fixed, or the
details of the problem have changed. We'd really appreciate your help in
getting confirmation that the bug is still present.

If you have time, please do the following:

Test to see if the bug is still present with the latest version of LibreOffice
from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/

If the bug is present, please leave a comment that includes the information
from Help - About LibreOffice.

If the bug is NOT present, please set the bug's Status field to
RESOLVED-WORKSFORME and leave a comment that includes the information from Help
- About LibreOffice.

Please DO NOT

Update the version field
Reply via email (please reply directly on the bug tracker)
Set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED - FIXED (this status has a particular
meaning that is not
appropriate in this case)

If you want to do more to help you can test to see if your issue is a
REGRESSION. To do so:
1. Download and install oldest version of LibreOffice (usually 3.3 unless your
bug pertains to a feature added after 3.3) from
https://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/

2. Test your bug
3. Leave a comment with your results.
4a. If the bug was present with 3.3 - set version to 'inherited from OOo';
4b. If the bug was not present in 3.3 - add 'regression' to keyword

Feel free to come ask questions or to say hello in our QA chat:

Dear Yousuf Philips (jay) (retired),

4a. If the bug was present with 3.3 - set version to 'inherited from OOo';
4b. If the bug was not present in 3.3 - add 'regression' to keyword

Feel free to come ask questions or to say hello in our QA chat:
https://web.libera.chat/?settings=#libreoffice-qa

Thank you for helping us make LibreOffice even better for everyone!

Warm Regards,
QA Team

Nope! It again illustrates the bottom line that PDF (ISO 32000-1:2008, or
2:2020) is NOT an editable format, it is a presentation/publication format.

Also, it demonstrates reality that LibreOffice is not a PDF editor as we will
only ever read content of a PDF to filter import to an ODF XML compliant
document canvas.

Fidelity of the filter import varies (poppler to sd Drawing objects, or pdfium
as image/meta streams as image to a vcl canvas), but in no sense do we do more
than read from PDF.

Export/print from ODF module to PDF is then a completely different process with
a different set of export filters.

And it highlights the project's need to scrupulously manage user expectations
reinforcing that PDF is not an editable format, and that LibreOffice is NOT a
PDF "editor".

Improvements can be made to LO filter handling as a PDF reader to import
content--witness the adoption of pdfium libs for the insert as image filter
paths.

But simply put, the internals of the presentation optimized text runs within
PDF do not support extraction with the lexical syntax of the original source
document from which a PDF was generated.

We can provide tools to better organize results of the import filters,
reformating them into either paragraph objects or sd draw objects--but there
are very real limits to what the project can or should do.

Indeed. Note however, that this would be less than the original idea here - to
have two style categories open at once. Plus, (or minus) you remove the top
toolbar, so it will be less than full 5 categories height.

Let's implement it first ;) - if it would happen, I'd hope we'd not need to
keep multiple choices.

I have implemented a minimum blink rate of 500 milliseconds in the code
identified in comment 13 in the following patch:

https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/c/core/+/144775

In the above patch, I set the blink rate to the maximum of
500 milliseconds, NSTextInsertionPointBlinkPeriodOn, and
NSTextInsertionPointBlinkPeriodOff.

The patch needs still needs to be reviewed and tested before it appears in a
nightly build. But if there any people who have a macOS LibreOffice build that
can test the patch, that would be very much appreciated.

This is not a Skia 'only' issue.

See in dupe

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151703#c4

where in a dual-headed system, shows the gradients get handled differently for
each of the three canvas renderings--presentation, next-slide and preview.

There are definite issues with the non-Skia rendering of the linear and axial
gradients and apparently the quadratic forms. It is just that Skia seems to
make them worse and shows during a slide presentation when the presenter
console is NOT in use.

Yes, abbreviated "Chapter Numbering" label change of bug 107573 was a poor
decision, "Chapter and Outline Numbering" would have been better replacement
for "Outline Numbering"

That said, the adjustments (UI and help) here to use "heading level" are all
reasonable,

Note this recent (and relatively popular) YouTube video by "The Linux
Experiment", decrying several usability issues with modern Linux distributions.
In the section on PDFs, it explains how, to edit a PDF, you use LibreOffice
Draw. Then it goes on to complain about how bad it is as an editor, and
particularly: How the text is broken up into separate lines.

The (very common) use-case described in the video: Signing a PDF by adding a
signature image to it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0re63X2nY0s

This illustrates that, at the bottom line, LO is a PDF editor, and in fact, is
_the_ PDF editor for users who aren't experts in locating software.

It also illustrates how addressing this issue will make both LO and FOSS
desktop environments more attractive to users.

LibreOffice 7.4.3.2 also hangs up when run under macOS 10.13.6. In the absence
of an ability to test LibreOffice 7.2+ under macOS 10.13 (High Sierra), perhaps
it would be safest for the LibreOffice downloads page to state that LibreOffice
7.2+ requires macOS 10.14 (Mojave) or later.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 148071] change about info Mac OS X to macOS

2022-12-22 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=148071

LO's About window unfortunately still says "Mac OS X" rather than "macOS".

Version: 7.4.4.1 / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 988f4a351a6fa8cf4bdf2bdc873ca12cf8cbe625
CPU threads: 10; OS: Mac OS X 13.1; UI render: default; VCL: osx
Locale: de-DE (de_DE.UTF-8); UI: de-DE
Calc: threaded

Version: 7.6.0.0.alpha0+ (AARCH64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 8635c9aa8c6f1078a9e220076d5a08daf30077e8
CPU threads: 10; OS: Mac OS X 13.1; UI render: Skia/Metal; VCL: osx
Locale: de-DE (de_DE.UTF-8); UI: de-DE
Calc: threaded

My first guess has been, it comes from reading the ProductName key value of
/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersionCompat.plist
(ProductNameMac OS X) rather than that in
/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist
(ProductNamemacOS)?

Short explanation concerning these two files and which one to choose or to
prefer, see
https://eclecticlight.co/2020/08/13/macos-version-numbering-isnt-so-simple/,
section "Interpreted and JIT languages" and especially the last sentence of the
last paragraph of that section.

Correction: as I see in the patch by Julian Nabet, it seems to be a tiny
hardcoded string in /vcl/osx/salinst.cxx, line 890:
https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/c/core/+/131836/1/vcl/osx/salinst.cxx#b890

Following that all – maybe it would be better anyway, to determine and
extracting that info via the OS itself based on

/usr/sbin/system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType
resp.
/usr/sbin/system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType -detailLevel mini ?

or simpler getting it with

/usr/bin/sw_vers -productName
/usr/bin/sw_vers -productVersion

instead of hardcoding it per string?

BTW: /usr/bin/sw_vers seems to read
/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist, if I interpret its manpage
correctly.

@Rob, @Mike Kaganski, @Patrick Luby: maybe one of you to make a short and easy
patch & commit or at least commit Julien's patch proposal?

This is NOT a duplicate of 37134. The screenshots clearly show Calc and Impress
being tabs for different documents. (Same file prefix, different file
extensions.) The screenshots are asking to be able to open Writer, Calc, and
Impress under the parent application.

That is different than Writer having one tab per document. 37134

It is also different than having one tab per section/division within a single
Writer document. 33173

Neither of those indicate having completely different applications under the
tabs.

Hi, In my case, the .xinputrc file did not exist. From my reported

$ echo "$GTK_IM_MODULE"

shows it is getting set somewhere.

/etc/X11/Xsession.d/70im-config_launch:export GTK_IM_MODULE

referenced, but not set here.
Still can't find where getting set, but found a solution, at least short term:
$ export SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen
$ LibreOffice-7.3.3.2.basic.help-x86_64.AppImage

now the scrollbars (most visible change) and menu fonts are different, looks
like openoffice-3 from years ago.

Today I created the ~/.xinputrc file with the line:
GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus

and started LibreOffice without the export above,
the flickering is gone, but the slowdown is still there.

With query

I found "Bug 145845 - Impress gradient is not displayed the same way in edit
mode and slide show", which already is concerning this issue – without having
recognized the root of the problem. Same in "Bug 147645 - Linear and axial
gradients lost in presentation mode", possibly others.

Please decide which one is DUP of which one.

This issue depends on disabled Hardware acceleration, as I learned from
"Bug 152641 - SLIDESHOW Shape gradient angle not reflected when presenting"

Hi Sierk,

I thought that this might be a difference between our two configs (I had Skia
rendering disabled), but I activated Skia rendering, and it still crashes as
soon as I click on any key of the virtual onscreen keyboard.

The only other immediate difference that I can see is that I'm on 13.0.1 with
my Macbook Pro, and you've already moved to 13.1

Very strange.

@Patrick
Only a nudge :-). Feel free the ignore if uninterested (it's a bit of corner
case). The problem here has been identified (comment 11) and a patch proposal
suggested (comment 13), it 'only' needs someone checking the patch & pushes the
patch to gerrit.

[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 149857] Cell Styles pane is not visible/accessible/grayed-out when a sheet is protected

I reproduce in Version: 7.4.3.2 / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 1048a8393ae2eeec98dff31b5c133c5f1d08b890
CPU threads: 4; OS: Linux 6.0; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3

Calc: threaded

Protect cells, sheets, is different than protect styles.
I understand that when you change a style in use in a protect sheet, this may
be effect on the sheet, but this comportment not seems good.
If style in use in a protect sheet need editing, an alert may be use but I'm
not sure that editing should be disabled.

Maybe it's a new option to have for the protect sheet diag ?
