It looks like they use[0-8] and value[9-11,15-16] free software, as well
as value free culture[12-14,15-16].

Admittedly it's not clear whether everything they use is free software,
or if that's an unstated goal currently. That much I'd say is worth
asking them for clarification.

As for "[using] this ML to beg for money", that wording is a bit
extreme, but I can see your point. However, it's worth noting:
1) it wasn't RiseUp themselves who emailed this list
2) should RiseUp not be using completely free software, there have been
many other cases where nonfree software has been promoted to some degree
for its other freedom-respecting values. Examples include: flattr,
duckduckgo.

But GNU.org and FSF.org use CC-ND, which is also non-free in terms of
"free culture", so I am not sure that's a great argument.

Source code, however, I am not sure about indeed.
This[1] is all I managed to find.

Perhaps a message to the admins would be in order?

AFAIK the user panel at https://user.riseup.net isn't free software yet
because it needs a security revision ;) ;)

other services are free software based:

* pad.riseup.net => etherpad-lite
* lists.riseup.net => sympa
* we.riseup.net => crabgrass
* vpn => bitmask

etc

This is indeed correct. Sorry if my message implied CC-ND meant non-free
software. As I've said before on this list, I agree with the separation of
free culture and free software in terms of concepts and movements, and am
more of an advocate for free software than free culture.

Indeed, we should message the admins. The way I see it there are two
outcomes:

   1. The software is indeed proprietary, and now we know for the future.
   2. The software doesn't have a license, and we can maybe convince the
   admins to apply a free software license.
   3. The software is free, but the admins are just not publicizing it (due
   to laziness, lack of awareness, etc.) and we can convince them to do so.

Re: [libreplanet-discuss] Aseprite is now proprietary software

The problem with BitCoin is that it's a separated currency. It doesn't
really serve to manage existing currencies. I can't use Electrum BitCoin
wallet to manage my Brazilian Reals (I don't have any, but anyways, it's
an example). GNU Taler seems to try to solve it, since it doesn't create
a currency on its own, but serve as a mere/simple transport agent.

I like this idea. There have been times when I want a feature only to
find the project is nearly dead or dying. I think the hurdle will be
creating a payment system that works for all parties. I think Bitcoin
shows promise - but as already mentioned, it can be hard for some to
easily acquire.
