Libretto 50ct not booting anymore

Subject: Libretto 50ct not booting anymore

PLEASE HELP! I use this tiny machine so often, the second it went down I
missed it! My libretto is not booting anymore.

After pushing the powerbutton, the powerLED turns and the harddisk spins
up, but that's all. No screen. No beep-signals. No further drive activity. I
checked the hard drive in another machine, not a problem. I also removed the
additional RAM, but that wasn't the problem either.

The strange thing is, when I spank (yeah, I know, but I get frustrated) the
Libretto, it sometimes boot into Windows and it's working. But when there's
some pressure on the left side (where the harddisk is placed), the machine
turns black and the problem starts from the beginning (e.g. no screen,
etc.).

It looks like a loose contact, but there's nothing I can see. Has anyone a
solution?

Please help me!

Sounds like dodgy memory...try removing then reseating any expanded memory
you might have - under the kb on the left, and you might also try reseating
the hard drive. If the bios doesn't see the drive, there's a *long* pause
before it decides to complain.

Plus - load a copy of the bios onto a floppy using a desktop - onto a
bootable disk. Try and flash the bios (um, can't remember exact sequence but
I think it's hold the backspace key on powerup, with the floppy in the
drive) and see if it gets through that.

The tech manual isn't helpful - there's a lovely flowchart of things to do,
90% of which end up with 'change the motherboard' :(

First take a recent distribution. RedHat level is 7.0, Mandrake 7.2
My preference is Mandrake the easiest for Libretto
PCMCIA Install is fine with Freecom CD, or SCSI CD with Adaptec 1460

RedHat method cannot be used (without any change) on Libretto:
After the boot floppy, RedHat asks for the drivers floppy.
But connot read it, because RedHat has not loaded the floppy driver !

Caldera; I have not tested

Corel; no install method for libretto

from there.
I never got redhat to install.

From: "neil barnes" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: Libretto Digest #1248

This works for Mandrake 6.1 and 7.1 with reservations. I'm working from
memory here so excuse a certain amount of vagueness...

Assuming you have a suitable space on your disc (if you have to move things
around to make such a space, then something like partition magic will do it.
The cut down version that comes with Caldera2.4 is fine for this if you can
accept the limitation in partition size choice)

OR format a clean hard drive on the lib with about 700M for dos and the rest
unused. Use whatever means necessary to read the CDRom and copy it all to
the hard drive. Remember where you put it! You get to format the rest of the
disk later as part of the install - don't forget to leave the last 40M or so
unused for the hibernation space.

Man6: go to the \dosutils and run autobot.bat from dos. It will ask for the
location of the mandrake install directory.

Man7:go to the \dosutils directory and follow the instructions to make a
boot floppy for a hard disc install (it needs to have initrd.hd as the boot
image). Then boot from the floppy and type 'install text' and you're away.
It wants to know where the mandrake directory is as well. One word of
warning - make sure you don't try and load in expert mode - there isn't
enough memory on the Lib to do that.

One other option - do it all under windows with PhatLinux
www.phatlinux.com This uses a huge windows file that pretends to be a
linux file system so it's a little slower but it's an easy install as it's
all in windows.

Cheers,

Neil

On a recent trip to japan, I was looking for such a beast, and they all
require cardbus support, which we don't have. Those look like normal type 2
cards, but have a brass or copper strip along the top edge of the
connector,
4 or 5 mm wide, with little bumps on it. They are not supported. I did find
a serial port to usb adapter, that is just a little dongle, driven by a
software driver. It might work thru the docking station, I don't know. I
bought it for another application. Mike Hodish

I think what he mentioned is just a USB adaptor that allow you to plug in
serial port device to USB bus. There is no other way around because (1)
serial port only support up to 115kbps of speed while USB needs 12mbps (2)
USB is a host based protocol (that means you need a processor behind it
directly to make it work), it is impossible via serial port.
