Subject: Re: Battery question

Hi Dave,
$8 seems inexpensive for Li-ion perhaps these are not. I thought the lib
packs had 6 cells in them, two (strings of 3) in parallel. Maybe the
standard is 1 string and the hi-capacity is 2 strings for the extra
capacity. I haven't opened my pack yet. I am looking for replacement cells
now. Thanks for the offer to help. I'll let you know my results when I get a
pack re-celled. The circuit is probably different on the hi-capacity pcb to
support the doubled charge current. I am reluctant to open my packs yet as
both are almost new. The mah rating is the measure of capacity but some
battery chemistries don't allow a large load (Lib vs. Minidisc) and the life
was greatly reduced. If the cells you tried were 1200mah then they should
have lasted 60 to 90 minutes (assumption from list). Something was wrong,
not charged, batts bad and wouldn't charge == cheap price, not 1200mah -
only 2-300mah. Thanks again for the info.

Thanks for helping me remember this. I'm going to find a cheaper pack
with
enough capacity to replace the cells in a standard pack (new) that I
have.

 http://www.alpinesports.org/~libretto/

I tried this with Minidisc batteries, cost me £5 ($8) for the three
needed.

  The hard part is
finding cheap cells but are available in packs for obsolete no-demand
laptops. I'll post my results after testing.

The ratings for the batteries would match up OK, but it didnt work for
very
long. I'd love to know why as I was always under the impression that the
mAh
rating was the deciding factor, and if this matches the original Libretto
 battery, then it should work.

I'd be interesting in assisting if it is any use to you, and vice versa.

 Cheers

 Dave

Formatting hard drives and instaliing Win98 -100CT

Could any one help with the issue of formatting. How do you reserve an invisible
partition of 64 Mb and where does it go. Is it absoluitely necessary. I am hoping to
fit a 6 Gb drive. I presume I can format the drive (and FDISK it) on my PC and copies
Win98 onto it - then fit it to my Libretto and go to setup in Win98. Help

AW: Formatting hard drives and instaliing Win98 -100CT

Hi George!

There are several ways to do this.
One, where you don't have to know the details about the hidden partition, is
to partition the disk in the Lib with DOS or Partition Magic or simlilar
software which runs from floppy. Then move the disk into your destop PC and
copy the WinXX CD and all the software you want to install on it. Move the
disk back to the Lib, boot from floppy and start the WinXX-Setup.

Can't the lib 50 batt be opened and better (more recent technology) batteries be
used to replace those existing?
I have not opened mine (scared of damaging) what type and mAH batteries are

Is there nothing better available?
A 12v cheater is great but I am wanting to use the lib more for dumping my

Any Ideas or Information?

GPS on Lib50?

2001-05-08 Thread Ken Kwok

Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 10:38:39 -0400
From: Ken Kwok [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: GPS on Lib50?

Thanks Dan and David for yr thots on the subject.

I was actually looking for a PC Card type GPS that I might be able to plug
into my Lib 50's PCMCIA slot, so as to minimize the tangle of wires and
avoid the use of the port replicator. I also wanted something that would
give me turn by turn voice prompts through the Libs soundcard.

I did some research on the net and the one product that came closest to
these requirements was the
Sony StreetMate http://www.streetmate.redhotant.co.uk/
But it's only available in the UK with UK maps : ( And it requires at
least a 133 MHz procesor (200MHz recomended) , so I doubt the Lib 50 is up
to it.

Other GPS kits I found included:
* TravRoute's Co-Pilot
http://www.travroute.com/products/gps/cp2001/default.html
This has voice prompts. But it uses a USB/Serial Interface.

* Rand McNally StreetFinder GPS
http://www.randmcnally.com/rmc/store/strProductDetail.jsp?OID=16221POID=-94
21SeqNo=0BV
Serial Interface? No voice prompts.

For those of u out there who might want read more about in-car GPS, this
site provides a good lead-in to the subject with some useful links:
http://www.cspry.co.uk/links/maps.html

I would appreciate further comments from anyone else who has used a GPS
system on a Lib. Cheers!

Ken

Looks like more of a Portage than a Libretto. Over 10 wide!

As someone said recently:
The largest Power of Libretto is the Smallest size but Toshiba has lost it.
The new model cannot beat Sony's Vaio picturebook.

I was hoping for something the same size as a 110 or even a little smaller, oh well...

But you can find the original hi-cap battery for something around
$130~150. $130+s/h is not cheap by any means. If it is $30 a piece, I
will buy a dozen of them.

I do realise that but the original battery would cost US447.00 from the
local Toshiba distributor!
