Guess I'll soon be asking questions and/or searching the archives to find out what kind of MP3 and other software can be run in Linux, and where to find it. Actually, I had most of them on the fat partition, so I could play them in either MS or linux, but I just moved them all to make room on the windows partition for some debian iso images :) The best bet for playing on the lib in linux is mpg123 which you can play with a big buffer and in mono, uses hardly any processor like that. Alsaplayer works, just, but not if anything else is playing, but it has a nicer interface and you can do things like going backwards and varispeed. It's marginal sometimes on the clocked 70 though, so mpg123 is the best bet. Other players are so heavy they won't work on the 70. Both those players are on the install list I sent you. _ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---TO UNSUBSCRIBE--- Reply to any of the list messages. Re: [LIB] L50 w/damaged sound chip or fuse on MB?
Date: Fri, 22 Mar 2002 16:33:47 +0800 From: Raymond [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [LIB] L50 w/damaged sound chip or fuse on MB? Well I really DON'T think the PCMCIA cards overheating are causing the problems simply because the processor sits right above these cards. If they overheated, the CPU would obviously overheat as well and go into thermal shutdown. My experiences with my overclocked L50 at least show that it doesn't take much to trip the thermal shutdown thing (immediately after thermal shutdown, I flip the keyboard and put my finger on the heatplate and can *JUST* keep it there for a few seconds before it gets too hot to keep my finger on it ... which means its running an awful lot cooler than, say, my old GeForce256 where I couldn't touch it at all!). Of course, it could be that Toshiba went the other way with the L70 or that I've just got a really sensitive temp diode in my old libby ... I notice that my new libby (L100) runs a LOT hotter than my old one (the heat plate could get too hot to touch even for a second yet it'll still be happily buzzing along). - Raymond I was amazed how toasty those SCSI cards were when I took them out. But as I said in another post... I haven't really feel for heat much in recent memory [that goes back at least a week or two :-)]. When I pulled the 20GB HDD out, it was hard to hold on very long, as you described on your overclocked L50... though I'm betting yours was bit hotter than my experience. Just goes to show how well these little beasts are engineered to hold up to all that heat. It's really pretty impressive. Well when I take out ANY hard drive from my L100 after its been running for about an hour (NOT OVERCLOCKED!) the hard drive comes out WAY too hot to hold onto (to the extent that when I was installing it and had to keep putting it in and out of the libby, I had a piece of paper just the right size to hold onto the thing!). Even my overclocked L50, just after thermal shutdown, never got that hot ... perhaps the L50/70's were more heat sensitive (hence the lower thermal shutdown threshold). - Raymond --- /~\ | | Does fuzzy logic tickle?| | ___ | My HDD has no reverse. Date: Fri, 22 Mar 2002 09:32:30 -0500 From: Tom Wilmore [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: Lib 1100 queries forwarded on behalf of Mike Hodish I have an ff1100v, with dual boot win98se and w2k. I have never been able to find a driver for the remote with w2k. Memory: comes with 64mb, expandable to 96 or 128, see http://www.dynamism.com/1100/index.shtml I have a 20GB drive, works fine. I could not find anything from Toshiba that would run the camera under w2k, but Tina Bird pointed me at a program called Video Capturix that works, except the little button that is supposed to take a picture doesn't work, you have to use the mouse (or keys) to take a picture with Video Capturix loaded. I had to use RATOC scsi drivers for the smart media reader, and it was not easy to get them to install correctly. If I remember correctly, I had to delete the driver and then load the new one (as a scsi device) without rebooting. If it rebooted before drivers were loaded, it found the device and assigned drivers that wouldn't work. I think the modem worked with the w2k drivers, but there are updates (windowsupdates.microsoft.com?). Dynamism said they had english drivers for all of it, but I think this is sort of pushing it. The remote and video stuff is still in Japanese (this is for W98). Hope this helps. -Original Message- To: Libretto Digest Date: Thu, 21 Mar 2002 08:30:00 From: neil barnes [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Lib 1100 queries forwarded on behalf of Mike Hodish Mike's having problems getting his messages through, so he asked me to forward: Recently picked up a lib 1100 in Tokyo for ~USD 400. I am looking for several things: first, the only memory expansion that I can get from Micsol is 32 Mb, but according to David Chien's site, it will hold more, I think 64? Anyone know where to get it? Also, I have gotten an IBM Travelstar drive... I forget if it is 10 or 20 GB right now, having just been awake all night, but it is above 8, at any rate. Any idea if this machine has the bios limit on 8 Gb requiring ez bios? I did download the recommended version when discussed a couple of months ago, so I do have it. I am confused about the EXACT process to follow so I wind up with the hibernation partition. I have a hard drive adapter so I can run the hard disk in my desktop or in the lib. I have raneesh partition freeware, and can get partition magic if need be. I want to keep the japanese os, and simply install english apps. I have already put a few in, and there is no trouble at all, just no room. Sadly, only way to tell is to pop a bigger HD in, wipe the HD clean to all 0's, install DOS and maybe basic Windows, hibernate, resume, then seach the HD with WinHex around the 8.4GB boundary for signs of non-0 bytes (remember you wiped the HD clean above). Maybe not. The 1100 series uses the hibernate to a file called hiberfil.sys on your C drive technique like some of the larger laptops. So there is no hibernation region as such. (Note: Works like a charm for me under both Win98 and Win2000. Haven't gotten around to putting Linux on the machine, so I have no idea how it would handle that. If its anything like the later Toshiba laptops then I don't like your chances ... the later ones use the operating system to help in the hibernation and write a file called toshiber.sys (check the extension) as the hibernation file onto the C drive ... you might have to be content with suspend (RAM still powered) under linux ... which isn't really so bad I guess ... hehe - Raymond --- /~\ | | Does fuzzy logic tickle?| | ___ | My HDD has no reverse.
