I opened up an extended pattery pack for the 50/70
libs that was working, and another for my 100/110
Libs so I could swap the guts of the 50/70 over to
the 100/110 shell. I learned that from a bunch of
listers who had gotten the 50/70 packs off EBay for
that purpose, as they're cheaper and more available
 than the 100/110 packs.

I am curious about how to start the process of opening
them without making marks in the case. Use a thin
knife blade?

I never bothered to glue them together again, as
when they snap into the Libby, they're held
together pretty well. If at some point I decide
to try using higher capacity cells to up the pack's
power, I don't have to deal with splitting the cases
 again.

Makes a lot of sense.

I notice my new main battery just purchased has an mAh
of 3000!!

Matt, and all,

So how is the system at this point, Jayme? Is the
 RTC battery functioning correctly now?
 Matt

W-a-a-a-a-a. I spoke too soon. It going past the
message that one time must have been a fluke. Because
when I left it off for more than 24 hours, the message
was back.

So late last night (Sat) I got out my trusty
instructions, tools, sandpapered my fingers (just
kidding) and swapped out the RTC battery. I have a
brand new respect for the manufacturing process of
these little machines! And a ton of notes added to the
printed instructions.

Actually, when one figures out how to use two tiny
screwdrivers - one to each side of the little white
wiring connectors, it's pretty easy removing them from
the mb. And why don't they tell you that there are two
thingys - one on each side of the keyboard cable that
need to be pushed toward the display side as far as
they can go and then the cable will slip right out??

I just wish I'd had Mikkel's advice for the case
popper. [Is that like a corn popper? :-)] I used my
fingers inside the battery compartment to start the
right side opening, then moved around the case and it
came right off.

Was kind of nervous booting it up when finished. But
it gave me that message again, and then went right
into the desktop after dealing with the message. So I
guess I didn't get any extraneous material in the
memory, and did everything properly.

It's still being charged right now. And I found a
paper on Toshiba's site stating what Perry said, that
the machine must be booted up and running in order for
the RTC battery to charge: can't just plug it in and
leave it.

I should know tomorrow morning if everything is as it
should be. Whew! what an experience. It would drive me
up the wall to work on these puppies all day long.

Mikkel,

How inventive you are :-) I just used my fingers. But
I suppose that using a thin plastic card with Toshiba
written on it would work much better. And if it didn't
have Toshiba on it, probably wouldn't work at all
:-)

I appreciate you making sure I have the proper tools
for my next homeservicing job on my Libby. I just hope
that will be many months away, if ever :-)

 On another related note.
I was visiting a tech at the official Toshiba
service facitity in Denmark some years back when he
was working on my 50CT, which I still have. They
have a special tool for opening up the plastic
parts.
It is an all-plastic white creditcard with the word
TOSHIBA in red lettering on at least one side. It is
the official Toshiba tool for not making too many
scratches on the plastic of the machines while
 opening up the display.

So if you have an old plastic card or you get issued
a new credit card for some place, keep the old one
and just use sandpaper on it to make it unreadable
to see what the card actually is and usable in any
normal context, then write TOSHIBA on it and you are
good to go on your next homeservicing on your libby.

The new main battery arrived this afternoon. Putting
it in the sick Libby, I ran it for about 1.5 hours,
and set the correct date and time in the Control Panel
icon. Then deciding to put it up out of the way for
the next 48 hours to finish charging, I shut it down
and got it set up in the new place. It was off for 5
to 6 minutes.

Booting, there was
NO message of bad RTC
NO message of bad CMOS checksum

When it got to the desktop, I checked the date and
time, and it was still correct! Perhaps it won't need
the new RTC battery after all.

I'm feeling some hopeful relief about this machine
right now :-)

Thanks to Matt, David and Perry for all your help so
far!

Matt,

I found a RTC battery for $30 and a main battery for
$90, including shipping and tax. Just waiting for them
to arrive so I get to learn about the Libby insides.

Which model did you say you have?

I have two 110's. One works great so far. Then there
is the sick one.

I hope I don't offend any Linux/Unix users on this
list by sharing something that made me laugh. I got
into the BIOS on the sick machine, and when I came out
it booted into GRUB. I thought Well, that's what is
wrong -- there's food inside! (grub being the
packpackers name for food)

 Good luck!
 Matt

Thanks! If you, or anyone, have been inside your
Libby, I'd appreciate any pointers you can give me on
this process.

Thanks! Matt and David for your help!

Learned something else. When charging the battery over
the past two days, I had shut the lid completely; and
the charging led went out. Consequently the same
messages were there when I booted. UGH! Two days shot.

So now, I've left the lid slightly ajar, and after two
hours so far the charging led is still lit. Hopefully
after another 48 hours the RTC battery problem will be
solved. If not, well, I guess I'll learn all about the
insides of my Libby.

Anyone know offhand what kind of battery and where it
can be had? Just in case.
