Subject: RE: [LIB] Margi failing to play video

I'll leave my system playing video over the weekend
and will report back on what the BSODs say.

Well Avi... I've got good news and bad news. The good news (for me) is that
after 3 days of playing 3 ~2 hour DVD images in W2K, I didn't get a single
BSOD. The bad news (for you) is I didn't come up with any data that might
help diagnose your setup. I did experience a couple of problems, but I
wasn't able to determine the causes.

Day 1: Played a 2 episode DVD. Each episode ~2 hours. 1st episode played
through and returned to the title menu unattended. The 2nd episode was
playing for more than an hour, but at some point before I checked in the
next couple of hours, the system had rebooted for some reason. But that's
happened from time to time with the L110 just playing MP3s in W2K through my
Echo Indigo. Maybe heat. It just shut down today because of heat.

Day 2: Played the same DVD. 1/2 way through the 1st episode 1st episode I
pulled the power cord and brought the L110 with me on a drive. That episode
ended on the drive, and I started episode 2. Somewhere along the way the
system shut down when the battery got low.

Day 3: Everything went flawlessly. I played 2 different ~2 hour DVD
images, one of them twice making about 6 hours of flawless playback. They
were concert videos, and I actually paused playback several times.

Now I didn't do any fast forwarding/reversing, navigating chapter and extra
menus. It seems that's where I've run into playback problems in the past.
But the only BSOD I've seen since you told me to set the screen resolution
to 16 bit was when after doing that, I reinstalled and ran Margi. I've
uninstalled and reinstalled it several more times since then, and everything
has been working darned well.

I was having a problem with my mouse, which was why I tried uninstalling
Margi. But I'm sure the mouse problem was unrelated. My case is broken at
the right hinge, and I think the ribbon cable is the source of the mouse
problem, as I wiggled things and the problem went away. I'm also pretty
sure that the colored vertical lines on the edge of the screen that
Librettos are famous for are due to faulty connections through that ribbon
cable.

Matt

Matthew,

is this a W2K vanilla or one upgraded with Service Packs?
It could be very well that this bug was introduced in a later version.
Care to share with me the version of stream.sys and ks.sys?

Are you playing DVD's using a ISO image or ripped MPEG2 files?

Avi.

No need to be condescending. Presumably you subscribed for a reason and the
only reason it is now annoying to you is that you are no longer interested.

I did a search and found this
URL: http://www.mail-archive.com/libretto@basiclink.com/msg16212.html that
has instructions for how to unsubscribe. They used to be appeneded to the
end of each message sent to the list, not sure why that stopped.

   --Jim Dempsey--
From that link:

**
---TO UNSUBSCRIBE---
Reply to any of the list messages. The reply mail should be addressed
to: libretto@basiclink.com - Then replace any text on the message's
subject line with: cmd:unsubscribe
 TO UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST--
Do above but with this on subject line: cmd:unsubscribe digest
**

So do this:

1. Address an email to: libretto@basiclink.com
. . By replying to any list message, this will be done automatically.

2. Delete any text in the email's Subject field if any exists, and type this:

cmd:unsubscribe

. . Or if you're subscribed to the digest, put this in the subject field:

cmd:unsubscribe digest

3. Then send the email.

You'll then get email back from the list server confirming the fact that you've
been unsubscribed.

Over the years... many, many people have not gotten that right. All kinds of
combinations of those characters have shown up. Let me make this as clear as I
possibly can.

The characters have to be typed into the subject field EXACTLY as I typed them
above. That means the characters I typed above which appear AFTER the colon (:)
and the space that follows it (: ).

Let me repeat what has to be put into the subject line of the email:

==

To unsubscribe from the list, type JUST THESE CHARACTERS into the subject field:

cmd:unsubscribe

To unsubscribe from the digest, type JUST THESE CHARACTERS into the subject
field:

cmd:unsubscribe digest

Well. you could talk to Dan Seiden... though it seems he's got his new
server software tweaked at this point. Haven't seen the list clog up and

What would be different with a ezmlm installation other than dealing with

Well, it'll essentially behave the same way as the vast majority of
mailing lists worldwide. Important differences between every other
mailing list manager and SVList (IIRC the remailer software that runs
this list) include:

* proper reference preservation (which would let any email program worth
  its salt handle conversation threading)
* a saner method of list administration (separate addresses for
  sub/unsub/etc., rather than a fragile subject-line-based mechanism)

I am 99% sure even the Libretto 110 won't support

137GB. It was released in 1998 and I don't think

ATA/66 was even available then, let alone support for
huge drives. The best you could do with a 160GB drive
would be put it in a USB case, get a USB 2.0 card, and
find a convenient way to get the extra power that the
USB card won't supply.

Depends on the model. Older ones L110 have ISA
buses, some of the
newer
ones have faster interfaces that support UDMA
connections. Anyways, as
long as
the HD can max out any interface, that's a good thing.
It'll mean that
you
have no trouble at all keeping the Libretto running as

I am 99% sure even the Libretto 110 won't support

137GB. It was released in 1998 and I don't think

ATA/66 was even available then, let alone support for
huge drives. The best you could do with a 160GB drive
would be put it in a USB case, get a USB 2.0 card, and
find a convenient way to get the extra power that the
USB card won't supply.

Aren't they all limited to a lower speed by the

Libretto's aging

interface? Someone said before that the IDE for the

hard drive on the

Libretto was on the ISA bus...

Depends on the model. Older ones L110 have ISA
buses, some of the
newer
ones have faster interfaces that support UDMA
connections. Anyways, as
long as
the HD can max out any interface, that's a good thing.
It'll mean that
you
have no trouble at all keeping the Libretto running as
fast as it can
go.

Nah, get a cardbus SATA card. It would probably be faster than USB2.

  1. HIBERNATION AREA SETUP
Are you saying that this needs to be an actual separate hard drive
partition
With it's own drive letter (E:, etc) ??

No. Simply leave it unpartitioned -- ie. unused. Create your other
partitions around this space. Partition Magic and Ranish Partition
Manager
  and
Linux partitioning software can all do this for you.

If you do create a partition on this area, you can simply resize that
partition using the above to move it outside of this hibernation area.

Partition Information for Disk 1:57,223.7 Megabytes
  Volume PartTypeStatusSize MBPartSect # StartSect
  TotalSects

=
  C:FAT32X Pri,Boot 40,656.7 0 1

 ExtendedX Pri 12,009.5 0 0
  83,264,895 24,595,515

Info: MBR Partition Table not in sequential order.

 EPBRLog 12,009.5 None --
  83,264,895 24,595,515
  D:BACKUP FAT32 Log 12,009.5 83,264,895 0 83,264,958
  24,595,452
   Unallocated Pri 4,557.5 None --
  107,860,410 9,333,765
Based upon the above, what should I do to create this hibernation area
properly. Please be explicit as I'm not an expert in this kind of
thing!

Here, the C: drive is too big (40GB) and overlays the 8GB boundary.
You'll
have to resize it down 8GB. Leave space after (eg. 128MB or more) for
the
hibernation data. Then use the rest of the HD for the extended
partition.

I can't say 'exactly' where the hibernation partition is since I believe
it
varies slightly depending on HD size and so forth, but if you leave the
1000-1100 cylinders free (try it, can't guarentee w/o testing), then you
  should
  be okay.

(Otherwise, you'll have to do what I did earlier -- wipe drive space
between
7-9GB empty - zeros - hibernate - unhibernate - examine HD with WinHex
and see
where the hibernation data was written.)

  2. DUAL (Or Tri) BOOT OS SETUP

Currently, have Win98SE installed as my OS.
Thought I'd use Win2K (or WinXP) on another partition and Linux on
another
  partition.
Unless fellow Libretterati think it would make more sense to put Win2K
(or
WinXP) on my current partition and the Linux on another. Thus
eliminating
  Win98SE altogether.
So do I just use PartitionMagic to create another partition and then
install
OS there? Or do I need to do some other setup things as in Item 1 above
  regarding hibernation area, etc?

Simply avoid putting a partition on the 8GB area, and you can do the
above
just fine -- three primary partitions for the three OSs. Doesn't matter
and
  will work fine.

Rather excessive to have both W98 and W2k on the same computer however,
so
I'd just pick one or the other and not install both -- unless there's
just
  some
program you have that wants the other.

So I'm finally taking the big step and am in the
 process of upgrading
my HD to a 20GB one. I'm following some advice I
 saw on the list a
while ago, using a windows boot disk's fdisk to
 partition out the
first 8.4 minus hibernation space, and a second
 hibernation partition,
then use a disk manager to partition the rest.
 However, when I tried
to fdisk, it can only see 7978 MB, and will only
 let me parition 1137
MB. Any ideas as to why? I'm using a Win95 OSR2
 boot disk, my BIOS
hasn't been upgraded (it's still 6.40), the HD is
 an IBM-DJSA-220.

 Don't know...
 What model of Libretto?
What OS('s) are you going to run?

 From: Digby Tarvin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: [LIB] fdisk cannot partition 8.4gb

 Hmm, I make 7,978MB = 8,365,539,328 which sounds
 close enough to me...

(you do know 1GB is not 1000 MB right??? )

I measured the hibernation start as 8,373,335,040 on
 my 100CT, but the
BIOS may be holding back a little more for some
 reason. Probably rounding
to the nearest cylinder boundry according the the
 mapped geometry
(multiple of 16065 sectors). Of course aligning to
 virtual cylinder
boundries is completely pointless, but that is
 Microsoft for you..

You don't have to reserve space for the hibernation
 partion if using
windows FDISK. It gets the drive size from the BIOS,
 which automatically
subtracts what it needs. That is the advantage of
 doing the FDISK on
the Libretto rather than on a desktop. In fact it
 reserves 64M for
hibernation, and an additional 12GB out of
 stupidity.

The point where you have to be careful is when you
 use a more powerful
os which knows about the entire disk to allocate the
 space on the
other side of the hibernation area.

Don't know about the 1137MB limit. Did you enable
 support for large
 disks when starting FDISK?

 Regards,
 DigbyT

P.S. You didn't mention which Libretto you have -
 they may behave
 slightly differently.

Installs a small program into sector 0 of the master boot record on
your HD. When the PC boots, it loads this in, overlays the old BIOS
Int13 calls that don't work, and lets you correctly see the full HD
 size 8.4GB.

You can deinstall and install it over and over again on 8.4GB HDs
with partitions below the 8.4GB boundary working just fine if they
were created already before installation. I've tried this and it
works fine for me booting into Win98SE with or without it as a primary

4GB partition created on the HD before installing it.

All partitions created after it is installed above the 8.4GB boundary
will be invisible when the software is removed from the HD. They'll
show up again if you put it back in.

Does not affect system BIOS at all.

So in a scenario where you had the above utility installed on a 'Big'
HDD (20GB, 30GB, 40GB, whatever), and then the system detected that it
was over-heating, where would the resulting hardware hibernate (ie the
one that can't be disabled) be written?

Hmmm... I'm not sure just what this program is going to do, even if I
have/get the right version. Is it going to flash the BIOS on the MB?
And
if so, will I be able to flash it back if there are problems.

Also, though I assume not, if it flashes the BIOS, will there be any
conflicts with any older, smaller drives.

Have you downloaded and tested the other 2 versions of EZ Drive that
 have
 posted?

  Use mine at http://160.87.24.214/ezdrv909.zip

Tested and works fine for me.
