accidental names

2003-12-04 Thread Paul Scott
In |coriolan-margin.ly|  in
Tips and Tricks Version 2.1.0 'raisedFlat' refers to accidentals--1
which is now accidentals--2 because of the quarter-tone additions.

This same change probably affects macros derived from the manual that
many of us have set up to put accidentals in text.

Not a complaint just a warning to others.

Distributed Proofreaders

2003-12-04 Thread Tobin Richard
Hello all,
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but there is some sheet
music being proofread in Lilypond format over at Distributed
Proofreaders (http://www.pgdp.net/).

If you want to help then log in (or sign up for an account) then scroll
down the list of available projects until you find "Slavery's passed
away and other songs". Make sure to read the project comments before
proofing.

Its only a 17 page project but there doesn't seem to be many people who
understand Lilypond at DP.

More syllables in one verse?

2003-12-04 Thread Joseph Zitt
In a song I'm notating, one verse has a few more syllables in one line,
so notes are added for them in what would otherwise be a rest area. Is
there a way to notate this so that both the normal and the altered
melodies appear within the same staff without too much confusion?

Re: file names nonsense

2003-12-04 Thread Aaron
Sorry for no follow up.
For some reason there were no apparent parse errors. Just couldn't find
dvi etc.
I assumed that the files were ok, but when I lifted the notation and
dumped it into a template I knew parsed, voila the errors appeared.

So for now I retract my question. If this becomes a problem at a later
date, I will ask again.

Sorry

A quick glance at the .ly file should be sufficient to notice
if they use any scheme -- at least for a small file. Of course,
somebody with malicious intent would make the scheme hard to spot...

I don't think that scheme can erase your filesystem, unless you're
running it under root -- your normal user doesn't have the permission
to damage the filesystem. Of course, it could still delete all your
user's data files.

You could run unknown .ly files as another user (make an account
only to be used for potentially unsafe things), or compile the .ly file
inside a chroot jail.

If you're happy licensing your work as public domain or MutopiaBSD, I recommend
http://www.mutopiaproject.org/index.html
It's specifically for Free LilyPond scores.

In discussing Free music with other musicians, it seems that Werner Icking's
archive is much more well known:
http://icking-music-archive.org/

Neither of them are specifically aimed at teaching material, nor strings,
but they're a good place to start. You may also want to make a small
web page and submit links to some viola groups (either online or offline).

Finally, you could send a copy to me, since I also play viola. :)

Cheers,

bug with extender lines

2003-12-04 Thread Russ Ross
I see two problems with extender lines which I believe are bugs:

1. They start too soon, overlapping text (particularly noticable
   with punctuation).

2. When they end at a rest or the end of the piece, a warning is
   generated "warning: unbound spanner `LyricExtender'" The output
   is correct in this case, but the warning should be suppressed.

Here's an example that illustrates both problems:

\score {
\simultaneous {
\context Staff \notes \relative c' {
c4 d e f g f e d
}
\context Lyrics \lyrics {
This2 __ is, __ an; __ example. __
}
}
\paper {}
}

Is there a way to fix the spacing issue? If I can do it in one
place then that's fine, but if I have to change it every time I use
an extender line then that seems a bit silly.

Also, is there any way to suppress the warning? When I get dozens
of those warnings scrolling by it makes it difficult to spot the
real errors.

If the answer to either is "no", would someone who is subscribed to
the developers' list be kind enough to forward this message as a bug
report? The list is closed to non-subscribers.

Thanks!

look in the manual under "Notation Manual|Sound" --- there is a (very)
basic
description of how to change the equalizer settings of the midi
output. this is
probably how to fix your problem.
Wow, that *is* basic. It's nice to know instrumentEqualizer exists, but
simply mentioning its existence is not enough to get it working in a
lilypond file of mine. Searching both the archives and lilypond.org
turn up nothing useful on 'instrumentEqualizer.'

Anyone here use this in their code?

file names nonsense

2003-12-04 Thread Aaron
Hi all,

I have a large amount of notation in lilypond format.
Many of the songs have no name and no text. I also have audio examples
and written introductions to each song.

I thought that giving each song the first few measures of ly text would
be a great way of absolutly tagging each song and the corresponding
audio and text.

The problem lilypond won't parse them.
Now is the problem the length or the use of periods??
example:
b16b8.b4bb16b8.a4ga4.g8aba2e4.ly won't parse but renamed to test.ly it
does parse.

I want each title to be significantly different and since some songs
start the same I want it to be as long as possible.

Is the a maximum size for a file name???

Or is it the periods??? and if so how can I use them??

Thanks

Aaron

jazz and score output

2003-12-04 Thread c10221
hi all,

with mats' help i've now got my output looking how i want it. now i have three
feature "requests" (if they are not totally insane and vaguely implementable).

in jazz notation you often see a slur up to a note from nowhere and also you may
find a slur from a note downwards ending in nothing. to implement these in
lilypond it is not quite trivial, but it works, with the only gripe being that
it is a lot of work just for on little output tweak. my suggestion would be to
implement two commands "\climb" and "\fall" --- which will either slur up from
nowhere or slur down to nowhere... this would make the job of anybody creating
jazz (or modern) charts w/lilypond a lot easier.

2ndly, the glissando notation is cool. i love it --- especially the zigzag
style... one bug/feature which is not right: if a glissando goes say from beat 4
at the end of one line to beat 1 at the beginning of the next line, you only get
a tiny little line at the end, but almost not there (in 16pt). the glissando
should also be continued on the next line finishing at the note it is attached
to. this fragment should show what i'm on about:

\score {
  \notes {
\property Staff.TextScript \set #'extra-offset = #'(0 . 3)
\clef bass
\repeat unfold 4 { g4 g g g } |
g4^"line" \glissando b g g \glissando | \break b1
\repeat unfold 4 { g4 g g g } |
\property Voice.Glissando \override #'style = #'zigzag
g4^"zigzag" \glissando b g g \glissando | \break b1
\repeat unfold 4 { g4 g g g } |
\property Voice.Glissando \override #'style = #'dashed-line
g4^"dashed-line" \glissando b g g \glissando | \break b1
\repeat unfold 4 { g4 g g g } |
\property Voice.Glissando \override #'style = #'dotted-line
g4^"dotted-line" \glissando b g g \glissando | \break b1
\repeat unfold 4 { g4 g g g } |
\property Voice.Glissando \override #'style = #'trill
g4^"trill" \glissando b g g \glissando | \break b1
\repeat unfold 4 { g4 g g g } |
\bar "|."
  }
}

as you can see, this problem is especially apparent w/dotted-line style.

third feature/bug request: when creating a score, lilypond does not take the
Staff.instrument/Staff.instr text into account when calculating the linewidth of
the score. which then results in manually having to tweak the linewidth down
until the text fits on the page. would it be possible for lily to automagically
calculate the instrument names into the linewidth thereby avoiding this problem?
I realise that this may lead to unsightly indents in the first line w/overlong
instrument names, but it would save most ppl a lot of work.

regards,

simon the impossible. :)
