thanks for that, it will save me some time in the next build :-)

Scott, could you wait until 1.9.6 or would you like to me to build the

I certainly appreciate not having to compile these so I'll gladly wait.
I can easily go back to 1.8.1 if I can't get what I want. I can also
learn more about emacs and learn to patch that.

Thanks very much for what you are doing,

ly2dvi doesn't exist in 1.9.5 - it's been renamed lilypond.

Does that suggest that Pedro's deb's install an incorrect
lilypond-mode.el and startup?

When I run your version ly2dvi reports that I am running 1.7.20. When I
install from unstable it reports 1.8.1.

I have partially tracked this down. I have both:

-rwxr-xr-x1 root root25850 Aug 26 11:23 /usr/bin/ly2dvi

and

-rwxr-xr-x1 root staff 25648 Jun 7 21:05
/usr/local/bin/ly2dvi

When I install from unstable emacs runs /usr/bin/ly2dvi. When I install
from your debs emacs runs /usr/local/bin/ly2dvi.

I looked at lilypond-mode.el and don't right away see why it would go to
different place to get ly2dvi but that's as far as I have time to trace
it right now.

I don't know whether this suggests a packaging problem or something
messed up on my system but I thought it would be good for you to know
about this.

Ok.

I'm not sure, but something will have to be done. Note that
lilypond's data directories do already have a version string. The
biggers problem may be the fonts: how to support two versions of feta
on one system? We may even have to add versioning to feta.

There are at least two 'standards' that Debian uses. You can have
binaries tagged with version strings (what python does). Then there
is the alternatives mechanism, but I'm not sure if it is used for
different versions of the same package. Mozilla uses a second set of
-snapshot packages, while gcc, apart from the different versions
gccX.Y, is also packaged as -snapshot and -experimental, which live in
completely different trees.

These are mere 'technical details' that you can discuss with Anthony,
and possibly the debian-devel list.

Jan.

the "new" package idea is very good. I was thinking of 1.9.x replacing
1.8 which now doesn't sound good because 1.9 is a development series.

> > Should I contact the lilypond debian maintainer (Anthony Fok) and

you're right. Since the debians are very strict with the way packages
are created, uploaded, etc, I'll need to read the docs to get more
knowledgeable. Having a "new" package will imply on installing the
binaries in a different place than 1.8 and having a different name (in
case one wants to install both 1.8.x and 1.9.x). But, AFAIK, they
already have standards ways of handling cases like that. I'll check it
out.

Nice!

Because it will cost you some time and you should be willing to keep
it up for a while; you'll probably need to be(come) a debian
maintainer and do (or help Anthony add) a 'new' package called
lilypond-snapshot or something. It would be very nice, though.
