Somebody produces a patch, for lilypond git and/or GUB as
necessary, and we will examine it. There are no guarantees that
we will accept any patch.

Do I need to fiddle with GUB to install a otf font file?
I understand (roughly) how the metafont stuff works, but
the JazzChord font is otf. I feel that pasting this file anywhere
in lilypond's build tree won't suffice to make the font available :-/

Off the top of my head, I'd estimate at least 10 hours of work for
anybody unfamiliar with both lilypond and GUB to be able to
produce any sort of a patch.

I don't know. I don't even know what an otf font file is.

That sounds reasonable. So obviously you need to
1. look at the otf-reading code to see how it loads stuff
2. figure out how to distribute an otf file by adding it to git
and then figuring out how to make the build system include it in
the data
3. maybe not do anything in GUB after all

Estimated frog time: 20 hours.

For /some/ things, it's nice to have serif-ed chord names; an easy way
is to put

\override ChordName #'font-size = #0
\override ChordName #'font-family = #'roman

in \layout \context ChordNames, which gives the attached.

Or you could try

\override ChordName #'font-name = #'Exact Font Name

to use any font on your system.

Ok, you're right - but IMHO 1204 is about documenting the new font features,
whereas Marc Mouries proposed to include the Jazz font and Gonville into the
standard lilypond distribution, which is another issue.

Jean-Pierre G writes that the font is free to use, but he doesn't leave

The Gonville licence seems to be very permissive already.

Does it make sense to include external fonts into lilypond?

Technically, it's impossible to include external fonts, since once
they're included they cease to be external.

Patches will be thoughtfully considered (and I'm assuming that the
patch is under GPLv3). The main questions are does it break
anything that's currently working, does it make things slower,
and does it make the download size much much bigger.

I think they will make LilyPond more versatile and better suited for

work out-of-the-box are much more convenient, especially for the

I know it's a preference and I don't think the feta font has anything to do

sheet or a score with chords on it plus all the other 'gumpf' that is
usually in a serif font (title, composer, arranger, tempo, dim.. cresc..
etc) they blend in when they are anything but sans.

Maybe you are right.
I have to admit that my scores that have chord names don't have almost
any other stuff that could mix with them.

When I see serif used for chord names it's like someone using 'zapf
chancery' for body text because it's 'fancy' :)

Although I have to say I have seen chord names in 'comic sans' on printed
material I have played in my Wind Band and actually while that sounds
dreadful, when you're playing some old time rag or an old traditional song
that's about 'jolly' things, comic sans chord names seem some how apt!

I'd say that it's very interesting. Something distinctive, but not as
soulles as regular sans, might be the best choice for chords (i don't
want to say that it should be comic sans of course :) ). Well, if i
stumble across any font that may fit i'll let you know.

I don't like it too, it doesn't blend nicely with rest of the score.
Perhaps it's because of Feta font, which is quite ornamental and chord
font is not (i think they would blend quite good with some finale
scores)... I have the impression that the chord names with default
