I think it's probably referring to z/VM TCP/IP APAR PQ34318. However,
that doesn't look to me like the problem you're having. Refer to

Re: IPL device number

2003-01-10 Thread paultz
Ken,

Mark has it posted:

http://linuxvm.org/patches/S390/iplvol.sh

Here's another chance for me, though, to thank Mark for the great job he
does of organizing all of this stuff at linuxvm.org.

In thanking Mark for writing the script ( I had been the one who
originally asked how this could be done), I mentioned I owed him yet
another beer. Mark corrected me that I was probably up to a pony keg by
now.

Hmmm ... can you FedEx a kegger? ;-)

SuSE patch-3858

2003-01-10 Thread Mark D Pace
I've applied SuSE kernel patch-3858. When you apply it there is a note
that you should be sure that have applied the latest VM APAR.
Well once I apply the patch, run zipl and reboot , my VCTC adapter to VM
stops working. See output below.
My question is - What APAR are they referring to? There is no mention of
the number. I have z/VM 3.1 service level 0101. As far as I know that is
the latest RSU. I have had no luck getting a response from SuSE.

You have a bug in the iplvol.sh script

When the subchannel is returned to the variable "subchannel", it should be
translated to upper case as the values in /proc/subchannels are in hex and
upper case.

On my SuSE SLES7 2.4.7 system LPAR, the value returned is "0be7", but the

Re: Anyone running DB2 connect on linux - I just got asked where it keeps the log

I checked with our DBAs and they said that the diagnosis log is about
all there is. The Peoplesoft second tier server (non-Linux) has an
access log built as part of the application, which is probably what
the db2 connect folks were counting on.

Re: Migration of NON CDL volumes to new disk array

2003-01-10 Thread McKown, John
If you are running under zVM, then you can use DDR to back up the current
disks to tape, then restore on the new DASD when it comes in. DDR does a
complete track-for-track copy and doesn't care about content at all as long
as it is readable. Or use OFFLINDR to do the backup and restore.

Re: RH 7.2 LPAR install - HELP

2003-01-10 Thread James Melin
Just for entertainment purposes mostly, we re-loaded the OAT configuration
for the ENTR - and the MAC address problem went away. Dunno why. I was
elated and then couldn't get to the net.

Turns out the very next problem was a mis-configured switch. So, just
wanted to know that smacking the ENTR card in the microcode did the job,
and the SuSE install works. Now I can try that whole roll-your-own oco
modules thingy for redhat.

In my mind, SuSE is ahead of the game for which flavor we go with because
they include the correct oco modules with their distro.

Thanks for everyone's help. This was REALLY frustrating me. Again, I bow
before the collected wisdom of my peers.

Jim,

Do you have a Linux or UNIX system available there? If so, what I
recommend
you do is this...

Take the initrd file from the SuSE distribution and copy it to the Linux
system.
Uncompress it:
cat initrd | gzip -d > initrd.out
Mount initrd.out on the loopback device.
cd to the /mountpoint/bin/ directory
Edit the netsetup file, and insert this near the top:
set -x
Save the change and exit.
Unmount the initrd.out from the loopback device.
Recompress the initrd again
cat initrd.out | gzip > initrd
Try the install again.

You should see a bunch of messages from the script as it executes. You may
not have access to a printer from the HCM, but you should be able to take
screen captures and save them to files for later review. Perhaps we can
see
just what command is failing to work as expected and fix it via a similar
method.

I thought of that too. Just finished trying it. Didn't change anything. I
do see messages about a partially successful config involving 832,833...
but I didn't write them down. I can do that and see if it sheds any light.
I WISH TO GOD our HMC was connected to a printer.

Re: Migration of NON CDL volumes to new disk array

2003-01-10 Thread Post, Mark K
James,

If you're still running SuSE 7.0 (2.2.16 kernel) you can _not_ use CDL.
That is only supported in the 2.4 kernel series. You can use the mini-HOWTO
at file://d:/webpages/linuxvm.org/Info/HOWTOs/movefs.html to copy your data.
Once that's done, you will need to re-run silo, pointing to the _new_ IPL
volume as it is _currently_ known by the running system, with the parmfile
using the _new_ DASD device numbers (in preparation for your next IPL).
After that, you should be able to do a shutdown and reboot from the new
volume.

You might also want to take a look at
file://d:/webpages/linuxvm.org/Info/HOWTOs/dumprest.html for a little
explanation of the above, but in the context of using the OFFLINDR program
to actually dump the data to tape and back to disk.

We are having our 'shark' box replaced with a similar model because it
keeps killing drives. IBM has replaced almost 30 disks on the thing since
we bought it. They don't want us to have it in the field as it's some how
wonky. So they're giving us a new one, and hauling our old one back to the
lab.

When I first built this one Linux LPAR (SuSE 7.0) I didn't know about CDL.
So I used the standard Linux layout.

We are unsure whether or not the tool IBM will use can cop non CDL Linux
volumes at all.

My thought was to re-configure the LPAR with the dasd addresses of the new
disk as well as the current disk and just use dd, ( I think?) to copy the
volumes and do whatever is necessary with silo to make it so I can IPL from
the new DASD.

Is there a way to make the new file system CDL and still copy the whole
system and make it IPL-able? Is there a way to convert the existing FS to
CDL without reformatting?

I am going to make the bold assumption that DB2 connect EE keeps track of
who accessed what DB2 subsystem, and any errors that occurred during that
connection in a log file some place. As far as I can tell, they were having
connection problems on Wednesday and wanted to see if it was DB2 connect EE
or something else. Since they had no problems going to development DB2,
just prod, I suspect it's the target DB2 subsystem not DB2 connect EE, but
regardless there should I suspect, be a log with who did what to whom on
the DB2 connect EE server some place.

Again, this is a guess as I didn't install it, and I am largely unfamiliar
with it. Just trying to get an answer for someone whom I owe a favor.

That would be a really good argument for the net-snmp based idea. You
could use the SNMP OID to provide guest status for your NMS system (and
have a single place to query what was running, and provide any private
info you want to via a standard interface), and have a "set" request act
as a virtual "power on" button -- send a set request and wait for the
query interface to report "guest up", all w/o inventing a new protocol.

In fact, you could implement the "set" request as a toggle, press once
for on, one more time to generate the CP SIGNAL SHUTDOWN command to the
guest for a graceful shutdown.

This reinforces my belief that the mapping database is being deleted. The UID's are
being reassigned starting at the beginning of the defined range, as users log on in a
different order from the last
time. Where you see the numbers is for UID's that haven't been reassigned yet.

When Samba (and winbind) are restarted, some names start showing up, but they
aren't the same as the ones that were setup before the reboot. Additionally,
it seems to not be the same one every reboot.

Re: Samba weirdness

2003-01-10 Thread Hall, Ken (ECSS)
Okay, that makes sense. The way Winbind works is it gets the RID from the Domain, and
assigns a UID number sequentially from a pool specified in smb.conf. It adds this
mapping to a database, but for
some reason it seems it keeps the database in the Samba "lock" directory. If you have
something in your startup that cleans out the lock directory, you'll lose the mapping
database every time you
reboot.

Here's some relevant stuff from the winbindd man page:

  $LOCKDIR/winbindd_idmap.tdb
Storage for the Windows NT rid to UNIX user/group
id mapping. The lock directory is specified when
Samba is initially compiled using the --with-lock-
dir option. This directory is by default
  /usr/local/samba/var/locks .

   $LOCKDIR/winbindd_cache.tdb
Storage for cached user and group information.

And some scary stuff:

If more than one UNIX machine is running winbindd, then in
general the user and groups ids allocated by winbindd will
not be the same. The user and group ids will only be valid
   for the local machine.

If the the Windows NT RID to UNIX user and group id map-
ping file is damaged or destroyed then the mappings will
   be lost.

Since the SuSE supplied Samba doesn't include Winbindd, I assume you built your own,
so you'll have to find the file based on what options you used when you compiled Samba.

Is there possibly a process start up sequence problem? I modifed the smb

the smb script is run at startup time. Does winbind need to start before
something earlier in the process?

Vic, the CD-ROM appears as a 3422 tape drive. If someone wanted to write
a 3420 driver for it, Linux could access it. (Dunno, maybe the 3480

Re: Samba weirdness

2003-01-10 Thread Rich Smrcina
We are using winbind. Stopping and restarting Samba does not cause the
problem, only a reboot. nsswitch.conf was modified to add winbind to the
passwd and groups tags:

passwd: compat winbind
group: compat winbind

That was the only change to any nsswitch settings.

Once security is set, everything works great. We just can't boot... without
losing the security settings.

After a reboot, and I see the uid and gid values, I tried a lookup (eg: wbinfo
-S `wbinfo -U 1000`) to get the proper value and it comes back with just the
number. Any ideas or comments before I take this to the samba list?

I have seen this happen when the owner of the files and directories is
missing, or not readible, from /etc/passwd. In this case the mapping from
UID/GID to username/groupname does not exist. If your using NIS or LDAP,
check to make sure that you still have a connection to the server.
/etc/nsswitch.conf should control this but it's traditionally one of those
files that is really easy to botch up while editing and it normally reverts

The names are just reverse translations of the UID/GID values. Where are those
mapped? passwd? NIS? LDAP? Winbind?

The translation happens in the name-service-switch mechanism, controlled by
nsswitch.conf.

Somewhere, your mapping database is getting reset.
