Re: zLINUX end user provisioning

2019-12-11 Thread Herald ten Dam
Hi,

for our customer we started with to provide the Linux, but the Linux team
wanted to provision it self. They bought Wave but didn't like it because they
want to script it. So at the end we use now the CloudConnector for z/VM,
nowadays called Feilong and is part of the openmainframe project
(https://www.openmainframeproject.org/projects/feilong).

The Linux team scripted around the API's provided by Feilong. We as z/VM team
provide for the linux servers the Swap on vdisk and some basic profile so the
Linux has always 2 FCP ports (Exit on Dirmaint and always called 5c51/5c50) and
the same network ports. For the Linux we use Mdisks (out of a pool) and for
Oracle binaries and Data the lun's are directly connected to Linux. After
installing Linux, a script provides Oracle. The customer is content, before it
costed around a week to setup a blade, now within an hour all is setup.

Feilong - Open Mainframe
Project
Feilong is a new open source z/VM cloud connector project under the Open
Mainframe Project umbrella that will accelerate the z/VM adoption, extending
its ecosystem and its user experience.

production here, we have taken an extensive look at it and continue to figure
out a migration plan for our non-Dirmaint environment.

It *was *a good tool-set and is long gone now unfortunately. Since it was

would not be of much use except for the concepts.

Humbly I would say zPRO is the way to go because I bet you have better things

RHEL8 z/VM requirements?

2019-12-11 Thread Alan Haff
How about z/VM - what's the minimum version required to run RHEL8 guests? I've
reviewed the docs at
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/8/,
including
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/8/html/performing_a_standard_rhel_installation/system-requirements-reference_installing-rhel
and haven't been able to find anything about z/VM at all.

Will any version of z/VM that will run on a z13 (and above) suffice?

Right. It has to fit in the scheme of your company.
I think a scheme that is used often in x86 is to use a cloud image and then
use cloud init to provision the system. You basically use a daily image
(e.g. https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/bionic/current/ has daily builds
of latest greatest 18.04 with all updates). You then use a config file
passed through as virtual disk to provision the system.
While this works natively with kvm, there are also documents that describe
cloud-init for z/VM. (I have not tested that with z/VM so I will just assume
that this will work as well)

A kind of similar thing is used in coreos called ignition, so a base image
that is customized with config seems to be common in the container/k8s
world as well.

There is a very affordable, easy to use and vendor-supported product
available called zPRO from Velocity Software that will clone (you get an
exact copy), clone and personalize (exact copy with new network info, etc)
or kickstart (brand new build) Linux servers on z/VM. It has system
administration of the servers within a single LPAR, SSI cluster or across
your Enterprise and can easily be customized to fit your needs.

it worked well enough for us.
z/VM 6.4 is different .. I haven't done anything with it.

Re: zLINUX end user provisioning

2019-12-11 Thread James Vincent
I did see the "no budget for buying" but I have a shameless product plug.

If you want to know more, let me know!

In the past (z/VM 5.4) I setup XCAT to do LINUX provisioning .. it was a
bit of a struggle to get it working but it was free and once I got it going
it worked well enough for us.
z/VM 6.4 is different .. I haven't done anything with it.

Mike and I are in agreement about read-only root: Don't do it.
Intellectually appealing, but impractical. It's good for a ysprog to play
around with such things to see what's *possible* with the available tech,
but just because a thing CAN be done doesn't mean it SHOULD be done.

When we start to aggressively push process-changing Z tech into the Linux
admin world, it creates a rift. The x86 Linux admins wash their hands of
Z, leaving it to a sysprog who isn't part of the Linux admin team to do
Linux administration. And the sysprog is now left with another job and no
pay increase for doing it. You don't get invited to the Linux admin
parties and you're not part of strategy discussions. You get left behind
and sand gets kicked in your face. You get exasperated eyerolls and the
occasional "OK, Boomer."

The real learning moment is when you simply ask your Linux admins, "How do
you install new Linux servers in your virtualized environments?" Based on
that answer, you figure out how Z can fit into that model. Just keep in
mind that better tech isn't always "best". By all means, ask them if
would be of value to them, but be prepared to accept
"No" as an answer, no matter how much inherent mainframe coolness is
there.

I didn't say you had to buy something. I asked how you deploy new Linux
servers on other platforms. This is about integrating Z into your
existing IT processes. You can't change the Linux server deployment
process without getting approval from a lot of other people, and doing
THAT requires the buy-in I'm talking about.

If they aren't using cloning today, they may have a good reason. I often
hear:
- The install process runs scripts that register the guest with
- Each new server must have the the latest patch level (so cloning only
helps if you're building several at the same time)

I'm just suggesting that before you start looking for cloning techniques,
find out first if that's going to be worth your effort.

Alan,

Yes, OK, many shops prefer 'build' over 'clone'. Chapter 2 of
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg248303.html?Open
shows how to use kickstart for RHEL.

Our shop still does clones because we have to use golden images hardened by
another team.

I would not recommend "read only root". It sounds good on paper, but the

I'm interested in this too. I am following the read-only root documentation,
which is starting to show its age a little (RedPaper redp4322 is good, but
copyright 2008), but still has good stuff about gold instances, maintenance and
cloning.
The other documents I have are the workbooks from some VM and Linux
installation classes I've taken, but a lot of the preparation stuff is skipped
over.

like, where and how to put an ISO. Nothing I've found in any cookbook says how
it was done, or what tools I can use to manage or unpack an ISO. BFS? OMVS? RPI?

I'm just interested in the latest doc. I'm trying to install ClefOS and manage
it as cleanly as possible.

How does your company deploy Linux and Oracle today (on other platforms)?
Cloning isn't always the best choice. It's sexy and it exploits a lot of
Z functionality, but it comes with a down side, too: Your Linux admins
