Re: SLES9 Install hang
We went round on this before. My suspicion is that they have (or had) one mirror with bad ISO images. Out of the 12 images I downloaded, all using IE on the same machine, two were bad. I didn't find out till I'd burned them, and couldn't mount them. I ended up tossing out at least 4 CD's before I figured out what was wrong. I re-downloaded the two bad images, still on the same machine, and one came in correct (md5sum matched, and it was mountable). I had to download the other two more times before I got a good one. I don't recall exactly which discs they were, but they were both in the 31-bit set. All images for the 390x set were fine on the first try. Every bad image (for a given CD) had the same md5sum, which sort of rules out random corruption. The fact that I was eventually able to get them all good using the same process each time seems to rule out any persistent problem with IE. Besides, I download ISOs using that machine all the time, and never had this problem before. When I finally did get good copies, the md5sums matched the ones posted on the page. I'm speculating on this, but if they're using DNS to load balance between servers, and you're going through a DNS cache, it will tend to download from the same IP address every time, until the cache TTL expires. This MIGHT explain why people are getting bad images consistently until they switch machines. -Original Message- From: Linux on 390 Port [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Rob van der Heij Sent: Tuesday, December 07, 2004 3:27 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [LINUX-390] SLES9 Install hang On Mon, 6 Dec 2004 16:48:35 -0700, Ledbetter, Scott E [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Now I'm wondering about my SLES9 images. Re: SLES9 Install hang
Sometimes an image is downloaded incorrectly. CD Recorder says it is a bad image. So, I delete it and download it again (takes the same amount of time for the download). CD Recorder again doesn't like it. There is nothing I seem to be able to do considering that image. But, if I go to another machine, it will download correctly. This is going to sound stupid but... I had a discussion with someone from the GNU people about him downloading my project after I'd changed it for his recommendations. We'd had the same problem. The changes didn't show up. Turned out that there was something strange with the browser caching stuff and returning the cached (i.e. old) version rather than the updated one. (No, this is not a Win system either.) Another useless 'Weird but true...' story... SLES9 Install hang
I went back thru the archives a couple months, and didn't see any discussion of this one... I'm trying to install the current SLES9 evaluation CDs. Once we get our support keys, I assume that this evaluation distribution can be upgraded, via YOU, to a current, production distribution. Wellwe hang... The first hang, I was able to get around. When you are first asked to select/activate/format dasd, just select and activate them. If you format them, you will hang when doing the package selection. Wait for the partitioner step, and format them there. But the second hang, I can't seem to get around... After CD1 has been loaded, it asks for CD2. I insert CD2 and click OK. Nothing. I can use Windows explorer to see that CD2 looks like a normal Suse CD (as least looks like all the others). I have 256 MBs virtual defined, using SMB for the install, with an IUCV network connection. I've tried the abort installation button, but it presses, and nothing happens. Are there any known problems with the evaluation CDs that would make them, rather unusable? I had problems with the SLES9 hanging during the install too. I believe that I had a bad CD image that I downloaded. Try downloading the image again and verify downloaded ISO images using MD5SUM. To check the MD5SUM of the filename.iso you would type the following in a terminal: md5sum filename.iso sans quotes. I believe novell gives you the following: FilenameMD5 Checksum Value Approx. Back in the old daysSuse 8.0 that isG. You needed 512MBs if you wanted to use the Web interface for installation. 256MBs worked just fine for VNC. And back in Suse 7.3, it seemed like 128 MBs worked just fine for installation via the non-GUI interface. But now a days, I can't afford 512MBs even for a short while (would require standalone time for that kind of storage). Even with 300MB virtual, I had to go to some, lessor used machines, set run off and hit PA1 to allow them to fully page out. Well, for one thing, I now know where our knee is as far as where thrashing startsG. Not a single one matches the MD5 checksum on the Novell Download webpage. This seems so unlikely that I actually went and found another copy of md5sum. Same problem. I downloaded all 6 CDs for both 31 and 64 bit versions from the Novell website to my Win2K PC. Not a single one matches the MD5 checksum on the Novell Download webpage. This seems so unlikely that I actually went and found another copy of md5sum. Same problem. I downloaded new copies to a different PC, and came up with the same MD5 values. Are the MD5 values on the SuSE page bad? I'm glad someone brought this up before I actually attempted to install. Re: SLES9 Install hang
Grand Morning, I think it's an issue depending where you are, and what path you have to get to the iso's. I have tried for many weeks to get a 'clean' x86-64 set of iso's. I'm still trying. I did get the i386's after many tries. I'm on the left side of the big pond looking from the top, Mark is on the 'right' side ;=) Regards, Dick Waite Senior Consultant, ETS Solutions Architect, Software AG, 64297 Darmstadt, Germany Phone: +49 (0) 6151 921505 Email:mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: Linux on 390 Port [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mark Post Sent: 07 December 2004 04:58 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: SLES9 Install hang I downloaded both s390 and s390x versions.
