I think that it's the tty which is slow :
For example, I've used fdisk. When I hit '?' to display the help menu, the
display is slow : 3 lines, next 1 second, 2 lines, 1/2 second...
Secondly, when I use ls or cd, the floppy disk light is switched off (I
think, because of the cache buffer) and the output appears slowly.

What do you mean, "the shell is slower"? You mean the tty output
is slower? The prompt is displayed after some delay when no
input is typed? Or applications are read from disk and are slower
to start?

Could it be anything to do with differences in the root images used?
eg. different shells (ash is slowwer that standalone).

Therer doesn't seem to be too muych mentioned in the Changelog.

Mods to tty stuff shouldn't give any sort of noticeable difference, or fs
stuff. There is mention of changes to timer code, but I don't see why any
stuff like that should make any noticable difference.

ELKS 0.0.81 slower than the 0.0.76

2000-07-12 Thread COIFFIER =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Fr=E9d=E9ric

I've installed EKLS on an old 386 with 2Mbytes RAM. I've tried
several versions and I've remarked that the older versions are faster
than the newer. The starting is the same but the shell is slower.
The change is appeared between the 0.0.76 version and the next one.

Why ?
