 Ah, nods.

Someone opened up a big ol' can of whoop-ass on you, eh?

more like a big ol' can of boo hoo hoo whining. it really doesn't matter
whether Jon Leech or John Q Public tries to explain to the raging linux
lunatic why he is completely off base--it's just falling on deaf ears.

but this thread sure does illustrate exactly the type of userbase sgi
has to look forward to dealing with when they get into the intel/linux
pimpin arena.

cheers.

Hi all,

Is the Panasonic KXL-RW10A CD-RW drive compatible with Linux? Does anyone
has experience on setting up this device to work with Linux Mandrake 7.2
(kernel 2.2.19-4.1mdk) or other linux? This drive has a PCMCIA SCSI
interface. When I plug the card into my notebook, the kernel can detect
the PCMCIA card and assign IRQ and others for the card. I'd like to ask
what other steps are required to setup the drive for CD burning in linux.

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Redhat 7.1/Mandrake 8.0 Hardrive Problems
Date: Sun, 20 May 2001 15:57:35 -0700

Alright kids, here's the story:

My pertinent hardware layout is:

MB - Abit-kt7-raid\
HD - IBM Deskstar 7200 30gig
PROC - Thunderbird 900

I'd been running a couple distros on my system (first RH 7.0 then Mandrake
7.0? 7.2?) for a while with no problems whatsoever. I did a clean install to
MDK 8.0 and now I get an error message dumped to my console by the kernel
about every 10 seconds or so:

hda: dma_intr: error=0x84{DriveStatusError BadCRC}
hda: dma_intr: error=0x51{DriveReady SeekCompleteError}

I did an install of RH 7.1 (which also uses the 2.4 kernel) and I'm getting
the same probelm. I've already swapped out my IDE cables and reformatted the
disk checking for bad sectors, and used low-level disk utilities from IBM to
check for hardware problems.. so its not one of those... Can anybody help?
Is there a kernel patch for this anywhere? Am I high and dry?

Thanks a million,

Andrew Murray

I've bought a SIIG UltraATA/66 PCI board, and for various reasons had
to install it as the only active board in my system. Windows 98
(after a little jiggering and swearing and the accidental loss of some
nontrivial data) boots from the new controller and works fine. Now to
install Linux.

I've already found the UDMA howto, and it gets me right up to the
point where the drives are supposed to init and be recognized. What I
get is

probing with STATUS(0x00) instead of ALTSTATUS(0x51)
probing with STATUS(0x01) instead of ALTSTATUS(0x51)
no response (0xa1)
resetting drive

and it does this for both /dev/hde and dev/dhf (which would be all the
hard disks in the system).

The CD-ROM drives on the secondary IDE controller on the card appear
to be working fine, but the hard drives won't initialize. Anybody got
any idea why, and what I could do about it?

I have just bought an Advansys SCSI card (2930U+ it
says on the box), and it detects the three (elderly)
disks I have connected to it without problems.

But when I build a kernel (2.2.12) with advansys enabled in
'SCSI low-level', the kernel oopses as soon as it tries
to do whatever it does to to /dev/sga. Is this a well
know problem? And is there a fix? Or should I post
some more information?

Thanks for any help - and sorry for crossposting, but
I'm not sure if this is a hardware or a system question.

Your problem could be kernel config option "CONFIG_SMD_DISKLABEL".
It is SMD disklabel (Sun partition tables) support, and it is turned off in
default kernel that ships with RedHat 5.2

Hi you all.
I am trying to configure a SiS 6326 AGP video card on Linux with the Xfree86
3.3.3. The problem is that it seems that the configuration program doesn't
recognise the memory from the card (videoram=0) and all display modes are
deleted. Even if I edit manually the XF86config file and set up the valid
modes for my monitor, when I start the X windows (xinit), evrything becomes
black and you can see that the cursor changes when you are on top of the
terminal or outside it. But you cannot see anything as everything is black
(except the cursor).

May somebody help me? Thanks before hand.
