The 3Com 574 has been supported for quite some time. pcmcia-cs
3.1.24 certainly supports it, and the pcmcia-cs that was current over a
year ago supports it. If pcmcia-cs is installed and the cardmgr daemon
is running, plugging the card into a PCMCIA socket should result in two
high beeps as the appropriate module is loaded and the actions specified
in /etc/pcmcia/network.opts are taken.

If these things don't happen, then a report on the error messages that
do get generated would be useful. pcmcia-cs is actively developed on
http://sourceforge.net/ , search for "pcmcia-cs" and make use of the
forums and documentation there. HTH,

...at least, that's how it worked when I tried an HP parport CD-RW with
my laptop, though it used "epat" instead of "bpck". The Backpack
protocol has been available under Linux for over 2 years, is well
understood, and works... though I would not recommend using a parport
CD-RW; you just can't push data over a parport fast enough to burn at a
reasonable speed.

Look at the names and numbers on the parts. "cat /proc/pci" works for
PCI hardware. If you have unknown ISA stuff, isapnp may help, or it may
not. If you have unknown MCA/VLB stuff, you may be up a creek. If you
are truly concerned, post the names/numbers of the parts you're
suspicious of to this NG, and someone will probably get back to you.

over the SonicFury or Santa Cruz because
of the cool breakout box that it comes with.)

Can anybody verify that this card works properly under Linux? Are any of its features

Hi,

I have been using the Net2Phone Yap Handset on a Windows platform for years
and it turns out the device is excellent for what it is supposed to do.
However, I am fed up with the creepy Windows OS that crashes a lot of time.
I am wondering if there is any support for this device under Linux that
anyone knows of. As far as the device concerns, I am open to any
suggestion that may get the device working under Linux.

You'll need a bleeding-edge kernel (and I do mean bleeding-edge:
2.4.4ac4 or newer) to get intelligable output from it.

I'm not sure how well anything other than 2-channel waveout/wavein is
supported though.. I have one in one of my dual boot boxen right now,
but that machine has severe stability (hardware) issues, so I don't use
it much.

As far as Linux support is concerned, the best (modern) card to get is
the SBLive. The GTXP should only get better, but it'll be a while
before you can take advantage of its fancier features. And Philips
hasn't released any specs at all. :)

If this is better answered in comp.os.linux.setup, please forgive me for
cross-posting in the future.

Newbie linux install.

In Expert mode, trying to load module aha152x to use my cd-rom connected
to a SB16 scsi card(Adaptec 6360 chipset). I've been to the RH site and
read their faq about scsi card installs and used parameters:

aha152x=0x340,11,1,1 where 1 is the scsi id and I assume the extra 1 is
for parity.

I've tried different scsi id's on drive(jumper settings) and different
adaptec drivers, even no parity, or 0 in place of one, but I always get:

"failed to insert aha152x module"

Do you gurus suppose this is a problem with my parameters, or could there
be something else I'm missing. I created disks with rawrite using the
boot.img and drivers.img from the RH cd on an old IBM pc350(p133) with
96mb ram, and a 1.2gb ide hd. NT loads their aha152 driver, so I know
driver and scsi card work, but if I was happy with NT, I wouldn't be here.

Sorry to be late in posting here new info.

Here it is:

my overclocking P3-700mhz FC-PGA to 895mhz prevents RH 7.1 running.

After taking out all cards, except the video and check, RH does not run.
Putting an old PCI video, an old TNT, 1st generation, these two run
perfectly
in Asus P3B-F, RH still hangs. I am at my wit's end. Have a break, coffee,
think,
and finally, that is the last possibility, which shows that RH may not like
overclocking ?

The Asus CUSL2 mobo + GeForce2 run perfectly with RH, not the video card.

Cheers,

SN

Hi,
We have RH6.2 installed on a DELL Poweredge 2300. We have an Adaptec
2930CU SCSI card installed into this machine which runs the Seagate Travan
tape drive. BRU is used for our backups. For some reason, the backups
keep working, then not working, they work for about a day or two then quit
working out of the blue. If you try to issue a tapestat or tapeinfo, it
won't even be able to communicate with the tape drive. Once a reboot is
forced though, we will be able to issue tapestat and tapeinfo commands even
though the backup may or may not work for that night. It is very
inconsistant which is the hardest part about solving the problem. ANYways,
we decided to post to see if anyone was running close to the same
configuration and was/was not having this same problem. Any information
you can provide to me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nick Moore

Subject: Compiling of hpoj-0.7 package fails
Date: Mon, 14 May 2001 22:30:07 -

Hi,

I would like to install the hpoj-0.7 printer package on my RH7.1 box
(2.4.2 kernel).

Now make fails with strange errors. Checking the INSTALL script downloaded
with the package I find the following (see bug section):

=
If during "make" or "make install" you get an error trying to create a
symbolic link, then you are probably compiling and/or installing on a
file system that doesn't support symlinks, such as MSDOS or VFAT. Try
compiling and installing on a native Linux ext2 filesystem.

FEATURE: The kernel drivers require at least kernel 2.2, due to the
"parport" functionality they rely on.

BUG: The kernel drivers currently fail to compile under kernel 2.4.
They also do not work with SMP (any kernel version). These two problems
are being worked on.
==

The same INSTALL file from http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/hpoj/INSTALL does
not have this BUG section.

Question: Does anybody know, if this package may be compiled under the
2.4.2 kernel? If not, are there any workarounds?

Thanks for your help.

Heinz

Subject: Linux X goes away???

Running RH7.0. I never can be assured if Linux is going to come up in X.
Sometimes it does and somethings its just a blank black screen. When it
doesn't I have to re-install the who OS over again. Running Matrox Millenium
G200 8mgs ram.

What confuses me, why would it work sometimes and sometimes not?

Confused and looking for answers.

Thanks for your help.

Subject: Disk errors with kernel 2.4.2
Date: Mon, 14 May 2001 18:15:52 -0700

I installed RedHat 7.1 on a new IBM IDE disk a few days ago and am having
nasty disk errors ever since. They happen every few hours and mess up
filesystems a lot. So far I was able to recover by forcing e2fsck on the
/usr partition in single user mode, and reinstalling the damaged packages.
But it's only a matter of time until glibc gets damaged and then it's all
over.

Now this is definitely not the state of events I would like them to be. My
old RedHat 6.1 worked fine on this machine on an old Seagate hard drive.
It seems therefore that either the 2.4.2 kernel is broken or the new disk
is defective. The log file would occasionally have this message:

hda: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
hda: drive not ready for command

The disk is a brand new 40GB IBM 60GXP series (ATA-100), using dma
transfers (up to 33MB/s, I presume, since this is a BX chipset)

/dev/hda:

 Model=IC35L040AVER07-0, FwRev=ER4OA41A, SerialNo=SX0SXLL6552 Config={
 HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec Fixed DTR>10Mbs } RawCHS=16383/16/63,
 TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=40 BuffType=DualPortCache,
 BuffSize=1916kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=16 CurCHS=4047/16/255,
 CurSects=-217054981, LBA=yes, LBAsects=80418240 IORDY=on/off,
 tPIO={min:240,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120} PIO modes: pio0 pio1
 pio2 pio3 pio4
 DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2 udma0 udma1 *udma2 udma3 udma4 udma5

hdb is a 24x cdrom, hdc an ORB drive and hdd is a 20x dvd-rom drive.

So, I would really appreciate some help from those who are familiar with
IDE drivers or had similar experiences. My system is not usable at this
point and I need to know whether to replace the disk or the OS.

Thanks in advance,

Vladimir
