Re: StarOffice - Israeli mirror? RPM?
Regarding Staroffice 5.2 installation, here are the details from the book - I did it and it worked well. Note my comments below. [begin quote] Installation Overview: You'll be installing StarOffice on the server, then running a setup file that gets installed on the server, to install StarOffice on clients. The files installed on the server include the following: * Program and help files, including the setup file used to run the client install. * A share directory containing shared resources such as templates, and configuration settings for items like printers. * a SdlSrv directory, separate from the StarOffice directory, contaning files for services and user calendars (a separate, optional install). The files installed on the client include the following: * Programs and help files, including the soffice file used to start StarOffice on the client. *A user directory containing files created by the user on that client (includes modified templates, client-specific configurations, etc.). [snip] Installing StarOffice on the Server [snip] 4. In a Linux or Solaris environment, be sure you're logged in as the user who will be runnig StarOffice. 5. In a terminal wivdow, navigate to the directory on the CD for your operating system, then to the office52 subdirectory; for example, go to /linux/office52/ 6. Type the appropriate command and press Enter: ./setup -net [snip] 12. The installation type window will appear; select Custom Installation and click Next. 13. The Select Insallation Directory window will appear. Enter the directory, new or existing, where you want to install StarOffice. Click Next. Note - If you let StarOffice create the installation directory for you, it will assign fairly restrictive access rights to it. You'll need to apply the appropriate rights to it after installation so you can access the installed setup program. [long snip] Installing StarOffice on Each Client 1. In a Linux or Solaris environment, log into the client computer as the user who will be running StarOffice there. 2. On the client computer, navigate to the office52/program directory *on the server where you installed StarOffice* (You don't need the CD for the client installation). 3. Double-clice the setup file or setup.exe file, or run either of the following commands: ./setup or ./setup.exe Note - If you have problems accessing the file, be sure that the correct access rights are set on the server computer for the client user, especially if you let StarOffice create the installation directory. 3. A welcome window will appear. Click Next [snip] 9. The installation type window will appear. Select Standard Workstation Installation. Click Next. [snip] Starting StarOffice: Multi-User You don't need to start anything on the server except, if you're using it, Schedule Server (which was started automatically). Start StarOffice on each client, either with the program item added to the desktop, or running the setup or setup.exe file in the *client's* StarOffice directory. (The program item won't appear until you restart the client). [end quote] Basically, I run staroffice by running ~/office52/soffice, that's the executable. Hope this helps anybody. The above is taken from the StarOffice 5.2 companion, ISBN 0-13-030703-3. Problem with installation and SCSI CD/R.
Hi. I have a problem installing Suse 7.3 on my machine (which had suse 7.0). I should say on the outset that this is a PPC machine, but I think the problem is probably not CPU-related, so maybe the experience of people here may help. Basically, I have an internal IDE hard disk (on which I install), an external SCSI hard disk, and an external SCSI cd/r (from which I install). Kernel 2.2.16 (the old one I used) recognizes the SCSI devices without a problem. However, the SuSE installer runs kernel 2.4.12 (I think), and that one displays the devices correctly (e.g. disk at scsi bus 0, id 1, lun 0, cd at...). But then it gets stuck. As if, once recognizing the devices, it can't actually access the CD/R. Once or twice it got past this stage, and into linuxrc, but then linuxrc did not find the CD/R. So, I was thinking that one of two things are possible: 1. This kernel is overly sensitive to SCSI quirks (such as cable length, SCSI ID voodoo, and stuff). 2. The kernel, as compiled by SuSE, lacks some crucial module of which I'm not aware. If the first case is true, I guess I can shorten the cables by replacing my dysfunctional internal SCSI cd/rom with some new device (probably cd/rw, while I'm at it), so I only have one external device and about 1.5 meter less of cable. Of course, this is a bit of an expense with some added problems, such as - is a Yamaha CRW2100SNB supported by kernel 2.4.x). If the second case is true, I need to know what module I'm missing. The external CD/R is an old TEAC (I can find out the exact model once I'm back home). Any help appreciated. Re: StarOffice - Israeli mirror? RPM?
I also got hit with this when I tried installing staroffice. Here is a tried-and-tested way of installing staroffice on your linux machine in a normal, unix-like way: 1. su to root 2. run the installation with the -net option, and install in (say) /opt/staroffice6.0 (N.B. Ignore any components the installation fails to register) 3. Exit from root 4. Now that you're yourself again, edit the .sversionrc file in your home directory and REMOVE ALL MENTION of the version you are trying to install (aha!) Rename your staroffice6.0 subdirectory to eatmyshorts6.0 if it exists. 5. Now do a workstation installation: cd /opt/staroffice6.0/program setup (answer all the questions truthfully, please) 6. After the setup completes, logout and login again. The staroffice components will be visible under kde-personal-staroffice6.0 Good Luck - and enjoy the product! -- = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi about stallman's article - as always, he's not a lunatic but an idealist. but the anti-word movement must come from the users, even MS users: personally, i hate word attachments mainly because they are big and tend to eat out my memory when i work with win98 on my office computer. i edit articles only on notepad (word's speller sucks anyway), and so do most of my employees. when exchanging documents over mail i encourage all our staff to use plain inline text, if they want a response within less than a two days ;-). because there's nothing like receiving a 1MB attachment with a single page document containing three lines and a .bmp company logo. and if HR people will only understand that, we'd all be better off. about our chat - i've already asked our chat admin to ask netfun for a version that will work on all platforms. meanwhile you can make do with the advanced chat we have - i know it kinda sucks, but it's better than nothing. hope netfun will provide us with a new version soon. i'll notify this list when he does... cheers, Dvir Volk Editor in Chief Nana by NetVision _ [EMAIL PROTECTED] | Tel: 03-5652585 | Fax:03-6241952 | http://www.netvision.net.il http://www.nana.co.il NetVision LTD. Anybody with a certain degree of hebrew support in the OS can read a ISO-8850-8-i/CP1255 hebrew text file. It also has the advantage of having a minimal space consumption. Problems: * Bad at saving formatting (although not as bad as people think). Export routines of word processors can preserve paragraphs, numbering and bullts. But probably cannot preserve *emphasys* * Not always trivial to use text from there (espcially if it has complex formatting) HTML: Text with some formatting. When used efficiently can produce relatively compact text files. Can preserve at least most of the formatting (at least the important bits). Problems: * Word2000's HTML export tends to be quite bloated (but not as the original document, I believe) * When explorer is used to read HTML files, they are not safe of ms-integration-virii * Not always trivial to use text from there (espcially if it has complex formatting) PDF: A read-only text format that preserves almost all of the formatting. Can be made quite compact. Problems: * A read-only format (Spare me the notes that it is not exactly true). Although for some uses it is an advantage * A viewer for that format is not common enough. * Most windows users don't have the software to produce a compact hebrew PDF document. PostScript: Genrally the same advantages and disadvantages of PDF. The viewer is even less common, and the format is a bit less rich (e.g: URLs) RTF: This basically preserves the formatting, and allows further editing. Problems: size is bloated. I'm not sure about virii. -- Tzafrir Cohen mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.technion.ac.il/~tzafrir = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Problem with installation and SCSI CD/R.
Hi! I have A SCSI CDRW on a regular Intell system with SuSE 7.3. I did the text mode install with yast1 from diskette. After the inital boot, it asks if you have any modules to install. Well, you sure do. Say yes, and you are asked to use the second diskette to select modules for your SCSI peripherals. At the end of the day, it creates an initrd image with these things built in so you can see them after a normal boot (otherwise you have to insmod everything by hand!). Most of this stuff is covered in the supplied Reference Manual. One gotcha: mkinitrd is NOT supplied with SuSE. They have there own thing called mk_initrd which does much the same thing. I found 7.1 and 7.3 to be quite different from 7.0 in the way it does this stuff - probably because of the move from the 2.2.x to the 2.4.x kernels. Bottom line is that once you have preselected the modules for your SCSI CDR, you can then use it for the rest of the install. Regards, DAF Shaul Karl wrote: Hi. If 2.2.16 worked with this CD rom and you did not change the hardware then cabling problems is not much likely. What is the behavior with MS (in case you have it installed)? You might try to compare the .config of the 2.2 and the 2.4 kernels. Any help appreciated. Herouth Perhaps the scsitools package can help? The CD-ROM HOWTO? Looking to buy: cat5 cable + a crimping tool + RJ45 (male) connectors?
Networking hardware: Is there someone on this list who would like to sell me some of the above stuff? I am aware to the `Where to buy home network' thread from mid September (http://plasma-gate.weizmann.ac.il/Linux/maillists/01/09/msg00211.html). I just hope that buying ODAFIM from people here would be a bargain. I live in Tel-Aviv. RE: Looking to buy: cat5 cable + a crimping tool + RJ45 (male) connectors?
Shaul, Har Tzion street near Central Bus Station in T.A. has a number of a small electronics shops which have everything you need, and at decent prices (comparing to computer shops). You may want to shop there before looking elsewhere.
