Before you go too far, take another look at the BIOS setting. A common tip,
back in the day, was to disable the camera from the BIOS. It should be
somewhere under the "Integrated Devices" menu...

It might be a permissions problem on the "kde-link" file.

I haven't used KDE for years now, so I don't know where to look. In unity,
all launchers are in the ~/.config directory.

Any of you uses / knows FreeCAD or know of someone who does?

Building a Linux-based Game Machine

2017-06-13 Thread Amichai Rotman
Hey All,

I'd like to build my own Linux-based Game Machine, for the kids.

Their original request was a Console Machine (Sony PS4) but I thought I'd
educate them with the Libre Software values...

I didn't realize how hard it will be!

They saved up their allowance and bought the following:

Asus H10 Mini ATX Motherboard/
Intel i5 CPU w/integrated GPU
2X8 GB DDR4 RAM
256GB SSD
2X SteamControllers

My original idea was to install SteamOS on it. It wouldn't install - got a
black screen after the first boot.

I ended up installing regular Ubuntu 16.04 and Steam client.

I am not a Gamer, so I find it hard to configure the Steam Controllers and
finding games - and make them work.

My kids are 11 and 12 years old, and don't have the skills necessary -
yet...

A friend from work told me to cut my losses and buy them the PS4 with a
couple of controllers and thus get rid of the head ache...

I am kinda tired of this - the whole thing started last September. Almost a
year ago!

I am writing to you with hope that one of you out there will be willing to
come over and help me out with making it work.

I live in Haifa.

Any thoughts / pointers / ideas / constructive criticism will be
appreciated.

Help configuring Multiboot from ISOs

2017-06-08 Thread Amichai Rotman
Hello all,

I am trying to set up a desktop kiosk-style computer at my local Library,
based on Ubuntu.

My idea is to have a regular desktop mainly for browsing the Web, but I
would also like it to be able to reboot into an ISO by clicking an icon on
the Launcher.

I specifically would like to use the Linux Gamers.net [1] and another ISO
compressed as squashfs and using syslinux to boot.

I am having trouble configuring the GRUB2 menu

entries to boot these as ISOs and I have no idea how to create a launcher
to boot the computer to the ISOs.

The computer isn't strong enough for a VM...

Israeli FLOSSers Directory?

2016-04-21 Thread Amichai Rotman
Hi all,

Is there an searchable directory of all people working with FLOSS in Israel?

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to search this DB for, say, all PHP coders
in Haifa?

I am willing to help put it together.

Didn't work for me. it isn't LibreOffice specific. It's related to the way

The problem is with Unity's text entry, not LibreOffice.

RFC: Creating an Israeli directory of Linux savvy Computer Professionals?

2016-02-13 Thread Amichai Rotman
Hi All,

I provide Computer Services to home and small businesses in Haifa.

I try to use FLOSS-based solutions as much as possible. Since the outbreak
of the "Windows 8.0" virus [1] I have managed to move about 20-30 computers
to the Ubuntu Linux distro - and they thank me almost every day since...

Funny enough, after they've been using Ubuntu for a few weeks, they tell me
they have re-discovered their computer and are able to do a lot more with
it than before!

The number one reason for them to finally give up on Windows and make the
switch is financial: most of them prefer to pay me 200 NIS for me to
install Ubuntu [2], instead of buying a brand new computer...

The most popular concern before making the switch is available support:
"what if you are no longer available for some reason? Who do I turn to for
help? Nobody knows this Linux thing..." - they say...

I try to explain it is not true. "First of all, I'm not going anywhere", I
say. "and there are millions of people in the world, thousands of them in
Israel, that are willing to help"...

They, naturally, ask for proof!

I thought we, Linuxers of Israel, could start a *Directory for Linux Savvy
Service Providers in Israel*. A much better version of the poorly
maintained version on the Hamakor Wiki.

This Directory should be very accessible for the average Joe, easy on the
eyes and searchable - by field of expertise, Location etc.

I am willing to help with populating the DB, but I'd need someone to start
the Site. It should have an easy to remember URL, so I can refer people to
it directly (they shouldn't have to dig a bunch of sub-menus to get there).
It should have it's own URL, (maybe under www.linux.org.il?) and, of
course, in Hebrew.

Your thoughts?

Thanks,

Amichai Rotman

[1] ;-)
[2] I know it sound very low price, but it is hardly any work for me, and
I include Data Backup and a basic explanation on the system! I can finish
the whole thing in 3 hours!

Re: RFC: Creating an Israeli directory of Linux savvy Computer Professionals?

2016-02-13 Thread Amichai Rotman
I mentioned this list as an example for how the list *shouldn't* look...

It is also well hidden. The average Joe will not be able to use it and will
never find it...

We (as a community) need to revamp the http://www.linux.org.il web site. In
it's current state, it looks like an outdated early 90s site...

Fwd: By 12/15: Send us comments to rally the Dept. of Ed. toward free licensing

2015-12-12 Thread Amichai Rotman
I guess some of you will find this interesting...

Amichai.

Subject: By 12/15: Send us comments to rally the Dept. of Ed. toward free
licensing
To: Amichai Rotman ‫‎<amic...@iglu.org.il>‎‬

The U.S. Department of Education has issued a notice of proposed rule
making (NPRM) with a request for comments from the public regarding new
regulations relating to the licensing of grant-funded works -- both
software and courseware.

These proposed regulations
<http://tech.ed.gov/files/2014/06/OET-Open-License-NPRM-FINAL-Web-Posting.pdf>
are meant to facilitate public reuse of works funded by Department of
Education grants. Currently, as explained in the NPRM, grantees are allowed
to make their federally-funded works proprietary. The Department of
Education receives a special license to share the works with the public,
but in practice it rarely does so. Worse, teachers and students absolutely
cannot use them in freedom (except for those few that happen to be made
free).

Since the course materials are works of practical use, they should carry
the four freedoms of free software, just as programs and manuals should
<https://gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html>.

The proposal would require grantees to publish the works under an "open"
license. In the case of software, they may be thinking of "open source",
which is not quite as strong as free; in the case of courseware, many
"open" courses are *not* free. The flaw in the proposed specific rules is
that they don't require that the license permit redistribution of modified
versions. Without that freedom, the works will be nonfree.

With a small change, this proposal will more clearly do what is needed. The
small change is to add "redistribution of modified versions" to the list of
uses these works must permit users to do.

If you are a US citizen or you are living in the US, then you can help make
that change happen by submitting a comment advocating it.

If you are not a US citizen, then we hope you will use this as an
opportunity to reach out to the department of education or the appropriate
government rule makers in your own country and encourage them to adopt
similar rules -- ones that require grant funded works of a functional
nature be distributed under free licenses. If you do contact your own
government with such a request, please, email licens...@fsf.org and let us
know!

Unfortunately, submitting a comment digitally <http://www.regulations.gov>
requires the user to run nonfree JavaScript (JS) code
<https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/javascript-trap.html>. We are taking a
stand against that by submitting the FSF's comment another way. We are
going to submit it by post so that it gets to the DOE by Friday, December
18th (the date comments are due).

To help you submit a comment without running the US government's nonfree
JS, we offer to print and send your comment along with ours. To do that, we
need to receive your comment by email sent to licens...@fsf.org with the
subject "DOE comment" by 12:00PM EST on December 15th. We can print PDF
files, ODF files and plain text. You need to follow the rules for
submissions 100%, because we don't have staff to correct even minor errors.
The eRulemaking Initiative has some guidance on how to write a good comment
<http://www.regulations.gov/docs/Tips_For_Submitting_Effective_Comments.pdf>.
But in the very least: your comment should clearly cite the above
referenced NPRM, it should express your support for these proposed
regulations, and it should cite the exact section (§3474.20 (a)) that you
believe should be updated and why you think it should, including any
relevant personal or professional experience or knowledge.

We may skip comments that are too long or that are inconsistent with the
goal. Please say in your email message whether you give permission for us
to publish your comment.

While we would like to deliver a large packet of comments to the Department
of Education, you can also mail your own: address them to Sharon Leu, U.S.
Department of Education, 400 Maryland Avenue SW., Room 6W252, Washington,
DC 20202-5900.

In addition, if you are interested in becoming a cosigner to the comment
the FSF is going to write and submit, then please email us at
licens...@fsf.org with the subject "DOE comment cosigner." In your email
please provide your full name, city and state, and be aware that we will be
making that information public as part of publishing our comment.

Lastly, there should be no doubt in your mind that the FSF's work in free
licensing, licensing education, and advocacy has played a meaningful part
in the circumstances that have lead to the US Department of Education
reforming its policy from promoting proprietary works to one that requires

Entering Shortcuts While in Hebrew Layout - LibreOffice on Ubuntu

2015-12-12 Thread Amichai Rotman
Hi All,

Can someone explain to me, once and for all, what's the issue with entering
keyboard shortcuts (i.e.: CTRL-C) while in Hebrew Layout in LibreOffice on

I call it an issue, because I understand it isn't a bug. It has something
to do with the text entry in Ubuntu, and if I change the text entry mode -
problem solved!

I really hate having to switch to English every time I need to copy or pate
text...

I promise I'll write up a Hebrew HOWTO guide for the community, as soon as
i successfully fix this annoyance.

Code Monkey by Matach - Outrageous!

2015-12-10 Thread Amichai Rotman
Hi All,

My kids got an offer to participate in the Code Monkey competition. I was
directed to enter the Matach Web site to start training the monkey (sounds
s bad!)

I was disgusted by the landing page - you take a look and guess why:

http://ebag.cet.ac.il/

My question is: Why does the official Education in Israel promote a private
company with obvious interest in making money, and so strongly objects
FLOSS solutions?!

As far as I know, it is common practice in Europe and the United States...

How can we change this?

How can I check if there's even one line of free software code behind the
Code Monkey business?!

I'll appreciate any information / opinion on FLOSS solutions in the
official Israeli edukation... (typo deliberate).

2015-11-05 Thread Amichai Rotman

Windows
8.1.

[OT] Moving to Jerusalem - Looking for a Job

2015-09-29 Thread Amichai Rotman
Hi All,

This is slightly off-topic:

Do to personal reasons, I have to move back to Jerusalem.

In order to do that, I need a job...

   - I have a lot of experience with troubleshooting and fixing computer
   problems (software and hardware).
   - I am using Linux since 1999: Installation, configuration,
troubleshooting - both Desktops and Servers.
   - I am looking for a position in the IT department. I have great people
skills, have been providing in-house technical support for years.

I have a CV in Hebrew and currently being translated to English too. I
would really appreciate any help with finding a job with one of the
companies that work out of Jerusalem.

i'd be glad to answer any questions and send my CV - if you contact me
off-list.

Thank you very much and Chag Sameah!

One easy way, if you can let things run overnight, is to install
Claws-Mail, which is pretty darn fast. Point it at your Gmail IMAP,
filter out everything before 1/1/2015 (the advanced search thing for

Don't try this with Thunderbird. 12K messages with Thunderbird could
take several days just to load up.

LibreOffice Shortcuts Bug

Hello all,

Can someone please explain why is it so difficult to fix the bug in Libre
Office that prevents us from using the keyboard shortcuts (like CTRL+C,
CTRL+V) while writing a non-english language?

Say I am writing a Hebrew document in Writer and I want to copy something,
I have to switch to English and then highlight whatever, and only then
CTRL+C will work

This bug exist since version 3.3.6, and I am using version 4.3.7-rc2 today!

also, I don't remember the bug #, I'll appreciate if someone sends me the

2015-06-10 18:23 GMT+03:00 Dan Yasny dya...@gmail.com:

The problem with trivia based certification is that it's so easy to get
without actually knowing anything. Download braindumps, go over them a few
dozen times, and you can pass any exam that is based on standard questions.
In Europe and the US, high-end IT shops know this full well, and they would
only look at certifications that are more implementational than trivial, or
at actual experience, especially because there's a huge, dirt-cheap
workforce out there with MCSEs and CCNAs, and no real world experience.
None of those guys would pass an RHCE exam, because there, you'd have to
actually sit down in front of a machine and do real actions, instead of
 memorizing braindumps and redumping them.

So if the goal is to find a job in high-end IT companies, banks and so on,
you have to keep in mind that a trivia based cert with no experience to
back it up will take you nowhere.

If you are a contractor/consultant, ask your clients. If you work through
an agency or marketing person, ask them what would get you better jobs.

My guess is that Microsoft and Cisco certifications will be worth more as
it shows that you know how to play well with others and (almost) no one
 has a 100% linux shop.

They even have a guide in their site how to configure it as bridge:

after you get this in place, a good, open wrt supported router is just

I was once connected to these ISPs, but not for some time

I have Netgear DGN2200 v2 provided by Bezeq, running firmware

Does Bezeq and the ISPs open a backdoor in my router somehow?

How can I find out exactly where I am connected and why?

CTRL-C and such if I am writing a document in Hebrew.

On previous versions I could copy text using the keyboard regardless of the
language I was using at the time.

Any ideas how to get that back?

Thanks!

 For interrupted installs:
 dpkg --configure -a

Would make sure that everything was installed properly, what you decribe

 Greetings,

I hastily tried to upgrade from 10.04 to 14.04 using do-relase-upgrade
It turned out to be a bad idea.
Now after boot I get something like can not mount / and then it
suggests that I will type (among other things) M for maintenance (start a
 shell)
First flaw I noticed is missing init functions typically in
 /lib/lsb/init_functions.d
I also noticed that init_functions file is not up to date so I copied
them from a stable14.04 installation. This operation enabled running them
scripts in /etc/init.d and also the service command.
Also I had to create a directory /run/network so ifup -a will start.
Still I couldn't figure out what step in the boot process I am missing
 that fails to mount /
Currently I setup the services on this server manually including:
 mount -rw,remount /
 mountall
 networking
ifup -a // Had to do it separately.
 smbd
 nmbd
 ssh
 postgresql-8.4
 apache2

the server is running in full but I guess it has some security issues.
I can not use the init command (i.e. init 2) to initiate the machine. It
reboots and I have to start all over again.

I intend to install a new server instead but for curiosity sake I want to
keep the bad server in order to learn more about upstart.

I did not find any articles about boot sequence with upstart other than
how to build rc files and a few about the conf files in /etc/init

Will appreciate some good reading on the subject.

 Thanks.

I am using Bezeq as infrastructure @ 15Mb and 014 as the provider at the

How can I check for the exact cause?

Both Bezeq and 014 say all is OK, but still...

I have a Dropbox client always open, but closing it only freed a bit of

SpeedTest and 014 SpeedTest sites.

 Now I have 750k or so :(

Was/is the upload truly 3M, as far as I know they promise best effort but
rarely reach promised speeds especially in upstream speeds since most
customers barely care about it, it more overbooked and lower priority.
That said I also like having 1M or more upload when and where possible.

The high DL is a big plus when I need to DL updates and big images

And also important, the ping is reduced

If it's 15 megabit or below, you've probably been upgraded to NGN.
NGN uses vDSL equipment which can run (poorly) in aDSL-2 emulation mode.
Instead of informing people of the problem, they just wait for them to
 call
and sell them a faster line in vDSL mode with a vDSL modem.

 Hi,
I was also disappointed with Gnome 3 on recent Fedora releases. I tried
using Gnome classic mode but still there were issues. Most disturbing was
with the JEdit editor. I also tried using MATE, but I still had issues with
the JEdit editor. So after years of using Gnome on various Fedora
releases, I switched several months ago to KDE, after years of using Gnome
 3. The issues with JEdit are solved with KDE.

 Note:
 1) it seems to me that launching an application in KDE (from the
application menu or from a desktop shortcut) is really slower than with
Gnome. However I did not tried to delved into it - maybe there are some KDE
plugins which can be disabled, or other tweaks.

 2) The issues I had with JEdit might be due to that I am not using the
latest release of JEdit (from my own/legacy reasons). I do not want to
upgrade from my own reasons, which I can describe if anyone is interested
 to hear.

Re: Mobile phone question

2013-07-29 Thread Amichai Rotman
Why complicate things?

You can get a dirt cheep smartphone here in Israel and then go to any of
the netwrks and buy the SIM with the plan that suits you...

I wouldn't go into buying refurbished phone at all - to many things can go
wrong : a friend of mine bought a Samsung Galaxy S II at one of these
dealers here in Israel and the screen went dead after two months. Of
course, the dealer denied any warranty or liability and it turns out it was
a fake from Japan...

I'd buy a new phone, right from the official dealer.

I just bought my Samsung Galaxy S III (GT-I9300) for 2400 NIS.

Jailbreaking is a minor issue. First of all, only a small portion of
iPhone owners do it, most have no need nor clue as to why one would do it
 in the first place.

Jailbreaking can be removed by resetting the phone back to the state you
bought it, which can easily be done using iTunes and anyone who has enough
tech savvy to jailbreak it in the first place knows how to do it.

To keep this the least bit on topic, Android also has a padded cell
which prevents you from installing software except from the Google store,
but it can be turned off via a user settable option.

The problem is removing SP (usually mislabeled SIM) locks. If a locked
iPhone does not have its SP lock removed by Apple, it has been tampered
with and will not be repaired.

Service Providers that sell SP locked iPhones, unlock them through Apple.

I have never seen an SP locked Android phone, although I am sure they
exist, so I have no information about how one unlocks them.

Ehm... the iDen network is still up and still heavily used.

Ok, thanks, I thought it was dead.

But yeah I also heard rumors that they'd like to close it and move
everyone to 3G, I guess if they provide stable PTT services on those
networks and devices that are rugged like most iDen devices most
 people won't mind.

There are several private (as in non government) trunked radio systems in
Israel, eventually everyone using MIRS will either go to cell phones, or
buy time on one of them. Keeping the MIRS network going for the few users
they have today will become less and less worth the cost.

Note that MIRS is the name of the system and service, iDen is a US
vendor's name for their service to separate it from Motorola's MIRS service
 and other trunked services.

Pelephone didn't start with no customers, when the market was just
released I actually spoke to them to see if I wanted to move to them
but at the time their 3G network wasn't operational yet and I would
have had to buy a new (old) phone just to connect to them.

Pelephone has been mistreating customers since the first cellular service
in Israel. They started out with AMPS, then NAMPS (which failed miserably
in the rest of the world due to poor service in hilly/built up areas. They
they moved to 800mHz CDMA, which was even worse in terms of crowded or
 hilly areas.

As far as I can find online Pelephone is still operating it's old
network (EV-DO/CDMA2000) but aren't accepting new customers with that
 technology...

However, Gmail allows you to send SMS messages to phones using a couple

The cheapest way to send 1 SMS to a cell phone from a computer is SKYPE.
$0.10 (about 50ag). Nothing needed but free software and almost any
 internet connection.

If you want to send many, it becomes expensive quickly.

The cheapest way to send a reasonable amount is to install either a
Nokia phone which supports the feature connected via either BlueTooth or
USB OR a Hauwei USB dongle to your asterisk system.

A properly unlocked Hauwei dongle can be used to send and receive SMS's
and make and receive phone calls.

Depending upon your cellular plan it may be a good investment or a waste
 of money.

About a year ago I bought a Hauwei dongle from a store in Haifa (it was
listed in ZAP) for under 300 NIS delivered, and another (used) one for
$50 delivered from a eBay vendor.

The eBay one had an antenna jack, which is good because within USB cable
range of my asterisk system there is no reliable cell phone coverage. I
bought a $15 antenna from China which is now out the window and on a
 railing, and it works perfectly.

קידום הקוד הפתוח ותוכנה חופשית לנוער

2013-05-22 Thread Amichai Rotman

Re: power failure - no keyboard in grub menu

2013-04-24 Thread Amichai Rotman
Another trick:

   1. Turn off the computer.
   2. Disconnect the power cable.
   3. Press the power button a few times to discharge any built up
   electricity.
   4. Disconnect the keyboard.
   5. Connect the power cable.
   6. Turn on the PC and wait until it passes the BIOS screens and into
   GRUB.
   7. Hold the power button until the computer shuts down (only if it's
   stuck!)
   8. Reconnect the keyboard and try to boot normally.

All this assuming you have a PS/2 keyboard. If it's a USB keyboard, make
sure the BIOS is set to allow USB keyboards.

Check your BIOS for an option that blocks keyboard until the OS is up.
This bit may have been flagged in the BIOS memory by the power glitch. If
you can't find it, you can simply try to restore your BIOS to
factory/fail-safe conditions, or disconnect it from mains, pull out the
CMOS battery for a minute or so, and then return it..

Replacing Firmware on the Siemens Orange Netbox

2013-02-23 Thread Amichai Rotman
Hi all,

I was one of the unfortunate ones that got connected to Orange's home VOB
line with the Seimens Gigaset 604, based on the Infineon Danube platform.

Once I have left them, they opened the router, giving me admin on it
and disabling the SIP capability.

I heard there is a way to replace Orange's firmware with another,
completely functional (?) but I don't know where to look...

Can any of you point me in the right direction?

You can contact me off-list too...

Hardware Database

2012-12-27 Thread Amichai Rotman
Hello,

It would've been nice to start a website where people could refer to to
find out all the practical issues of installing / using FLOSS in Israel:

* A hardware DB where they can look up a device by category (i.e.
Motherboard) and check the compatibility sorted by distro etc.

* A list of Israeli Linux friendly vendors (including vendors outside
Israel that are willing to ship their products to Israel hustle free).

* Distro specific Installation Guides, pointing out any common pitfalls.

Such sites might exist out there in the Net, but none of them are Israeli
specific or in Hebrew and don't hold all the a fore mentioned features in
one place...
Another plus is the fact that the content will be socially contributed - by
the users themselves.

What do you think?

It's not Flash - its Windows Media Player. When you enable the internal
Flash plugin in Chrome it uses Media Player 10 Compatible Totem plugin...

Try installing the 'totem-plugins' and 'totem-plugins-extra' packages.

Sadly, IBA uses CastUp, which in turn uses Microsoft's crappy codecs...

BTW - Any of you has some pull to make them switch to OGG or FLAC?

Re: tablets, readers and E ink - a question

2012-10-08 Thread Amichai Rotman
Hi,

I own an e-vrit e-ink reader and a Samsung 10.1 Galaxy Tablet.

I used the e-vrit for a while to read books from the e-vrit site and some
plain text classics. It does feel easier on the eyes, but it was very slow
to respond, so the experience is somewhat diminished... PDF files are
supported, but unusable - the screen is too small and the CPU is too slow
to render the image - about 2-3 seconds for each page flip.

Since then I switched to the Galaxy Tablet and I barely put it down: I use
it for reading mostly (80%), some puzzle games and some web browsing. Being
an Android device, it has integrated support for all Google services
(including Gmail, of course).

It is a bit less comfortable to read for a long time, but I don't have that
much free time anyway. I mostly read on the go or before sleep.

I'd strongly recommend a 10 Android-based tablet. I don't know the Kindle
Fire HD specs too well, but I guess you'd find some limitations with it.
The e-ink technology is not very useful yet, i'd wait for the next
generation.

In short:

If you are going to read a lot of content you buy from the provider
(e-vrit, Amazon) and have access to a light source - Go with the Kindle /
e-ink device. 10 is the optimal screen size for PDF files. Microsoft Doc
files are not very well supported with Kindle.

If you want some freedom to choose the e-texts source (PDF, epub, text,
etc.) and you are on the go most of the time - Go with the Android 10
Tablet.

Good Luck!

 Hey,

The E-Ink I had experience with was all black and white and wasn't so

paper book, felt the same for the eyes and pages didn't flip by them
self, also a lot of books are much heavier.

The main issues of LCD are the inability to read in direct light and
 lower batter life.
Even after anti-glare cover that I've added, I still need to shade the
 screen.

 Experience:
A few hours of toying with a E-Ink based reader and a lot more with the
 Nook Color I own.
The biggest issue I found with the Nook Color for reading was that with
some PDFs it was to slow to read (more then two second to load the
content into the screen) but I think it won't be an issue with a newer
 tablet.

If you go for E-Ink make sure that you have a light-source.

Re: printer

2012-09-22 Thread Amichai Rotman
I know Brother support Linux. I recommend Laser printers, if you don't do
much printing. I now prefer Samsung printers. usually works out of the box
- no additional software needed (at least in Ubuntu).
I'd recommend visiting the stores near your house, check the service status
(how much it costs to fix and buy Toner etc.). Make note of some of the
models you find interesting and check them against this resource:

OpenPrinting Printer List http://openprinting.org/printers

My mom bought the following printer:

Samsung SCX4623F http://www.zap.co.il/model.aspx?modelid=745898 and she
is very pleased. Haven't tried it with Linux though... This specific model
isn't on the OpenPrint list, but model SCX-4828FN is listed as Perfectly.
This model is the same, just the Networked version.

Tip: Try installing the printer without any drivers first.

Good Hunting

I have a Brother MFC all-in-one (cannot recall the exact model) , The

as far as I recall , fax is fine as well, however, you cannot print black

 ink in them.

Israeli Linux Related Web Sites - Outdated and User UnFriendly!

2012-05-12 Thread Amichai Rotman
Hello Fellow Israeli Linuxers!

I was going over some Israeli Linux web sites (using http://www.linux.org.il
and http://www.hamakor.org.il as starting points) and I've noticed a few
problems:

   1. most of the mention the same resources (obviously).
   2. Almost all of them are in English only.
   3. Some of the links on the Israeli Resources pages are dead - i.e.:
   http://www.zulo.org.il.
   4. All of them are outdated - both design (The IGLU site is the
   exception) and content-wise.

I have no idea in Web development and/or design, but what I *do* have is
lots of motivation, free time and some basic translation skills.

I am willing to learn, so if someone spends an hour explaining to me how to
improve the above points, and gives me the appropriate credentials, I will
be more the glad to help out in remedy the situation.

We have to make the Israeli Linux Portal more welcome for the Israelis,
starting with the most obvious task: Making Hebrew content available!

Thoughts?

(not for the whole world) is what we need, and who will it be for (Just
developers and aspiring developer? Or everyone who yesterday got an Android

the former - a list of (at least) aspiring developers.)

btw, if one is an app programmer, one does usually not touch anything
related to linux, it's just java and special android api. (rarely use
 NDK).

This is almost like saying that Emacs questions are not related to
Linux, because it's just Lisp and special Emacs APIs... While Android is
very different from GNU/Linux, it is Linux with a diffferent set of
applications, and much of the philosophy of its developers (although
unfortunately not all of it) is similar to that of Linux developers.

i guess there should be more than one. IAAD - israeli android app devel,
and IAD - israeli android devel (create your own android distro).

Why this separation into various kinds of developers? It's almost like
separating linux-il into separate mailing lists for Linux application
developers and Linux kernel developers, and perhaps further into Fedora
users, Ubuntu users, game players, and other subpopulations. I don't
think there's enough members or list traffic to justify such a division,
 yet.
