No Floppy at Boot up in Mandriva 2009.1 Gnome
I can get the floppy to be recognised after boot up with # modprobe floppy but what is the best way to have it showing up in Places after boot up? Unlike Windows in Linux before removing a floppy disk you have to unmount it. However it is not visible in Places at boot up. Re: ubuntu is starting to annoy me
Why not try the new Mandriva 2009.1 Gnome. It isn't bad at all once you get the hang of it. I let Mandriva upgrade me from their server from the 2009.0. I think that this is the Kernel used in the new version. The edition has the webcamera drivers that I need installed for Logitech chat. With Skype I do the following: # LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype and then checking if the sound is set correctly. I did see that it tells me their is an overlapping of Hard Drive Partitions on the HD that Mandriva is installed on. This I never had with the 2009.0 This doesn't stop me from giving Write Read to all Hard Disk Partitions. Re: DavkaWriter or Dagesh With Wine or Crossover
It's a matter of curiosity of trying new things. I remember reading within the linux-il lists that some people thought that Open Office didn't cover all their needs like MS Office. This brought me to try to see why this is so.. Then I found that altogether although MS Office showed the Right-to Left and Left to Right Buttons with Crossover it doesn't behave correctly as Open Office. For example I found that at the cursor it behaved as though it was typing in English. For example, בא instead of אב eventhough the paragraph mark was correctly placed. I do not know whether it is the Mandriva playing games with the programme or Crossover, but if Open Office works correctly it must be that Crossover has difficulty with Hebrew, or some Chametz got into the Keyboard. On checking Properties for the Setup.exe for Davka I saw that it showed as root is the owner. Probably this is correct. Installation does not complete in Crossover or Wine. I have a feeling that this programme needs a version of .net to be installed first. As I mention this is a matter of curiosity and not of great importance as I find Open Office an excellent programme. I doubt that for Linux there's anything to compare with it. Regarding Tables I noticed that if you paste Hebrew from Word into Open Office you get all the formatting details in the margin free area outside the cells; I am not so sure why Open Office needs to behave this way, but it does. What I had done in Word was paste into the right column some Hebrew text and English in the left column of the table. Then copy out to of it to paste into Open Office. I think the reason for this was being unable to paste directly into Open Office without an inbetween programme. Some programmes do not let you paste from certain sources.. Diversing a little: One of the things that they could have perfected in Open Office which is left to an Add in is the picture cropping option. This is more of a hit and miss regarding getting that right when cropping. But that is as I have written above digressing from the subject. At the monent the only way I can do that is by booting into XP ;-( If you are creating the documents and others are reading, then there are two solutions: 1) Open Office 3.0 handles MS Office documents = 2003 in a reasonable manner. If you are producing the documents for distribution, then expect no problems (but don't be mad at me if there are). Sometime receiving documents for MS Office users is not ideal, but creating them is fine. 2) Again, use OOo 3.0 but instead of distributing DOC files, distribute PDF files. DOC files are not meant for distributing, their viewer application is buggy and rarely used (users will likely open the documents in an editor, ie, MS Word) and has other problems. If you need to recieve and colaborate with MS Windows users, you have two options: 1) Buy MS Windows and MS Office and use them. I actually like Microsoft's office suit, but I hate their operating systems! 2) Convince your collaborators to use Open Office. This is suprisingly easy, many people are willing to get rid of MS Office. Although I personally prefer MS Office and use OOo out of necessity (Linux user), I find that most people prefer OOo for some reason, once they see it. Re: The role of Wine
Hi Shachar, I knew that I would prompt a reply with my e-mail. Which OS we live in a free world and what I love about Linux is the idea of the freedom it can and does offer. Yes I used an example like Office, but like others I find that Wine does give where possible the best of both worlds. My thought was due to the fact there is innovation out there in Linux someone looks at Windows based programme and says well I'm clever enough to write something that will do better. Till Mr average, which is me who will probably never learn to do this, I will use Linux programmes where possible bouncing between one another and Wine for where I haven't the patience to do so, or where I really need an option that just won't come right when used in Linux.. Someone wrote about Open Office and Hebrew not exactly appearing correctly. I had an email where Hebrew with vowels and English regarding the special blessing made on 8th April for the Sun cycle. I copied the contents to Open Office and found that the vowels misplaced I thought maybe it would appear correct exported to PDF No they weren't the same text copied to Word appeared correctly. So the writer was spot on when he said Hebrew may not appear always correctly, hence the use of Wine. Many thanks Oleg for your reply and taking the time to look it up. This Canoscan version was sold extensively in Israel because scans in WXP are quite fast indeed. I tried to get it installed with Wine, but failed. I suppose the only way is to use another emulator and install WinXP and then the scanner :(( I am sure that I am. However, I didn't stop at that. Re: kchmviewer problem - correct contents page , but any other page are inaccessible
Hi Lev, Have you tried to decompile the .chm doc and recompile it? What I mean is you may have to use a Windows programme to do this such as Help and Manual or Help Scribble. I doubt whether there is a programme to compile ..chm programmes using Linux. However, I could be wrong about that. It is quite possible that there was an error when the original document was compiled in the beginning. Programmes like the above use the Microsoft Help File compiler programme (available free) to compress and at the same time make the hypertext links live. Some of these programmes convert pictures to ..png files. Help and Manual can even produce a live hypertext link .pdf file, which obviously should run with Linux. I doubt whether you will get an easy answer on this one, but likewise who knows. How big is the file? Maybe I might be able to help decompile and recompile it. Re: Fax Modems?
I have a feeling that most of the PCI fax cards are really Windows type fax cards and won't work with Linux. Therefore an external Fax Modem would be preferential. This is a kin to the problem with ADSL or Cable Modem where an external router or certain external modems work. But a lot of homework needs to be done which will support. Mandriva Israel is very supportive!
As a Newbie I saw that it was geared up for Right to Left typing for עברית. After reading up that Gnome appears easier to use I chose Mandriva. I contacted by mail www.mandriva.co.il and requested their free Mandriva 2008.One Spring disk. After installation I found that I couldn't connect to the Internet. With Win XP I could and therefore sent them an e-mail requesting assistance. What happened next was that I got a phone call and a personal visit from רועי who is the Managing Director. He at his insistence visited my home bringing with him his own Router. On his advice I went to Bezeq and changed the Router for another. They gave me a Siemens SL2 - 141 which with ease I managed to set up, set the settings and do any Port forwarding. I have never experienced such wonderful service like this before whereby a Managing Director actually took the time and bother to actually visit, listen and advise. כל הכבוד לרועי! Shavuah Tov, I'm a beginner what they call a Newbe. I too came to some of the conclusions below. However, I look at the problem from a different angle as a newbe. I recently upgraded under the recommendation of Mandriva 2009.0 from 2008.1 v Spring, I can't for love or money other that in Cheese and Ekiga the Webcamera to work. With regards to other programmes yes they are not perfect and far from it. Something of the Linux uniqueness makes me use it. I have Wine on my computer which plays games when trying to use it for certain Windows Programmes. But - I fight with myself not to add too many Windows programmes for the obvious reason - if I wanted to use Windows based programmes I don't need a dual boot machine. When do we reach this line? If we cross it then you are 100% right. A young lad by the name Linus thought that programmes are too expensive for Mr average. He was right! With regards to Mac: I have owned a Mac Classic and before that an Apple //C two wonderful easy to use computers. I have yet to see anything in Windows get to Mac standards; they are several years ahead of PC. I do not want to sound like an advert for Apple. As I found that several programmes on the Mac crashed. The Resume button appeared, presumeably the guy who wrote the programme that crashed had to send out his Resume when looking for a new job. To: David Harel harel...@gmail.com Cc: linux-il@cs.huji.ac.il Date: Saturday, 28 February, 2009, 5:45 PM Not to take the wind out of your sails, I would probably advise against switching to Linux for anyone who's not a Linux expert. While it took me some years to reach this conclusion, I now believe that Linux is not a viable choice for anyone who's not an advanced user. My reasons follow: 1. Mainstream desktop environments (KDE, GNOME) have gotten slower and buggier over the years. As I bought faster hardware, KDE and GNOME seemed slower and crashed more often. 2. Linux distributions don't work. Even Ubuntu and other mainstream distributions simply do not work. Package testing is poor, and various programs do not integrate with one another. I often find myself having to fix things manually, usually by digging deep into various scripts/configuration files. Additionally, at least with Ubuntu, upgrades tend to break horribly, requiring a clean reinstallation. 3. Usability as a whole is becoming less viable. Applications (at least with my recent Ubuntu distrubutions) tend to crash often, work more slowly and have less features. Windows suffers from the same problems, only it's not as slow as Linux. On the other hand, I've been using OS X lately, and the thing works. The UI is simple, relatively powerful and does not randomly crash. I'm guessing OS X is not a valid choice for you, due to the prohibitive cost of Mac hardware.. Anyway, that's what I think. Good luck, though. I read an article in Readers Digest on Linus Torvald, as they say in Hebrew Kol HaKavod what ever his intentions were. Not many of us could do what he did: He took on the giant Microsoft. Is Linux winning over Windows, the Jury is still out on that one, and it will be for some time yet. Is Linux easy for the beginner not really as I have found out. The beginner has the fear of dual booting and wonders what will happen if the damn computer won't boot? More than once I've had to use the Windows recovery repair console to Fixboot and Fixmbr, then because of dual booting to either Windows or Linux use a nice little disk I have downloaded called SuperGrub. This little floppy in the A:\ drive automatically repairs GRUB. It finds which Linux and Windows is where and does the necessary. If anyone wants it I will upload it. With regards to Skype the picture showed up correctly once then didn't show up correctly in the preview next time around with the LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l1/compat.so skype I thought maybe an alternative like Yachi would work the Webcam, no this programme doesn't either. This sentence is written from the end to the beginning. It should read I cannot get the Webcamera to work, except in Ekiga or Cheese. Throughout your many posts to Linux-IL, you have complained that you cannot get the webcamera to work in *Skype*. Well, for your information, Skype is a highly proprietary, and highly obfuscated program that is hard to debug, has no official community support, and you should be thankful that it works at all.. If your camera works in Ekiga, then it works - period. The fact Skype does not interoperate with it indicates that it is a bug in Skype. We've been more than patient in trying to help you with it, and I've given you a lead that I think that your problem is that some of your device files have improper permissions, so you can only run Skype as root and use the video-4-linux compatibility layer. Please try to find out which device files are being accessed (You can use strace -e open as root), and report your findings to us. With regards to other programmes yes they are not perfect and far from it. Something of the Linux uniqueness makes me use it. I have Wine on my computer which plays games when trying to use it for certain Windows Programmes. Wine will take a lot of time to start working properly, because it is very hard to catch up with Microsoft's hairy Windows' semantics. Each version of Windows tried to remain as backwards compatible to the previous ones (up to including many application specific workarounds) but also introduced many new bugs, and incompatiblities that application writers had relied on or worked around. So it's a hard problem, and it would be hard for a group of free software developers to implement a Windows-compatibility layer from scratch.. You'll need to accept this fact. But - I fight with myself not to add too many Windows programmes for the obvious reason - if I wanted to use Windows based programmes I don't need a dual boot machine. When do we reach this line? If we cross it then you are 100% right. What do you mean? I don't understand you. A young lad by the name Linus thought that programmes are too expensive for Mr average. He was right! Actually, Linus Torvalds' original intentions in creating the Linux kernel were not to bring cheap software to the masses. However, Richard Stallman's intentions in starting the GNU project were to a large extent to build an entire operating system built out of free-as-in-speech/open-source components (which would be made available for use in other operating systems and in other contexts). It should also be noted that the original Berkeley BSD effort, started even earlier, and so were even earlier efforts of writing Public Domain or otherwise open-source software. I think in the /etc/modprobe.d I added a line options quickcam compatible=6 as I saw in www.linuxquestions.org I also tried both LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4compat.so Skype LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v42convert.so Skype I have a Quickcam Chat 8.4.8 In Mandriva 2008.1 Spring edition I had a Pixart PAC2007 connected quite successfully. Fw: Skype Webcam problems - Update to Webcam Problem
Update: I tried to start Skype a second time and the camera would not show correctly with the command below. I don't like the idea of remaining in Root all the time as it can be dangerous. I have also installed the following may be it will help http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3?stat...bv4lsrodzaj=3 and qc-usb-qcset - Tool for the old Quickcam Express webcams But I can see that it must have been a fluke that it worked once with the line below. It doesn't now. I think that I have 2 choices get hold of another Mandriva 2008.1 Spring disk or wait to see if Mandriva put this right in the next upgrade. They know that this is a bug and mismatch. Re: pluginserver.ex
Good afternoon to you, I am beginning to think like WinXP and Vista, Linux needs more RAM installed than I thought. I have a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz and 1 GB of RAM. Win XP needs 2GB to really run smoothly and Vista needs would you believe a whacking 4 GB of RAM. I too have noticed the delays of Firefox and wonder whether this is the latest version playing games here no matter if Linux or Win. I have seen an improvement when downloading a new Adobe Flash .rpm However sometimes there's a few seconds delay or a slight freeze up which clears itself and any typing done appears at lightening speed. Could there be file in Temp playing games? Skype sound problems
Regarding Sound. Sometimes I find I get the warning There's a problem with the Sound even though ALSA appears to be configured OK in Mandriva 2009.0 Gnome Desktop. I have an CMedia PCI card installed. I have not tried the Via. Other programmes work fine regarding sound without problems. To fix I log out and login then the problem appears fixed or reboot. However Mandriva appears not to save the settings. I have tried setting the Skype Options to Pulse but the sound isn't good, or it won't work. Skype I know needs ALSA. I have tried also tried through the Webcam but as likewise no video it doesn't input sound. I have also tried: alsactl store and alsactl restore Anyone have any ideas how to get over this problem? Re: Skype and Web Camera CPU Usage
Shavuah TovSara I read your comments and found them to be quite interesting.. When using the latest 4.0 Skype in WinXP there is an indicator which tells you the Bandwidth taken up by Video. Probably there is a way in Linux to see the Bandwidth usage but the best way I have found to see if I am getting the Bandwith I am supposed to have is http://www.speedtest.net/index..php What you can do is try the download upload test twice, once with the camera video and once without this will give you an idea of Bandwith loss. This is simple to use and anyone can use this page, left click on the Yellow pyramid and watch the man send the packets to your computer; Clocks tell you the Bandwidth speed. The camera is not so esential but sometimes I do want sometimes to use it. I do find that even in Windows if I see that the conversation is going to be a long one that I switch off the video. Re: Linux experts do not want to be bothered with newbie questions! (was:Re: No noobs?)
Good evening Shlomi, I am in the club a newbe that often racks his brains for answers. I still find it difficult to deal with a compressed .tar file and install it. I am sure that for the experienced they do this with their eyes closed. Sometimes I get the /home/moshe/desktop/. does not exist. Trying to get around in the console is sometimes for the newbe a real nightmare. When some experts say do this add this or that it may take quite a while before the console accepts the command request. I find that to make a file in a folder is a headache. I first have to cd to the actual directory, this I understand. Then I have to use mkedir to make the directory. To actually get a text file into that new directory I have to create the file and save to the desktop. Sometimes the mv file -T /Whatever works or CD to the relevant directory and type in the console import /./ and hope for the best. I expect that the number of people who have even read a driver's source code on this list could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Exactly. The distinction between noob and experienced posts is too blurry today to justify two lists. Especially when there is essentially _no_traffic_ on the noobs list (I subscribed yesterday and there have been no messages so far). There is indeed very little traffic on GNUbies-IL . I expect most new Linux users ask on web-forums instead of on mailing lists. I'm still a GNUbies-IL admin in case someone posts, and am subscribed there to answer any questions that people may have. I personally support accepting beginners' posts here on Linux-IL, assuming there will be any. I don't expect the added traffic to overwhelm Linux-IL, and it may lead to interesting more advanced or more philosophical discussions. Some beginners may be intimidated by the more advanced questions, but I doubt it will be an issue. In any case, maintaining GNUbies-IL is not time consuming at all, so I'm perfectly fine keeping it in its mostly-dormant condition.
