I use a real modem on an embedded system.
AFAIK, it's a Dynamode modem.

Hi

I use a Bullet E56K modem I bought from Bynet (Binat...) - they have
internal (PCI) and external versions, and it's a Rockwell chipset, so it
really works... It's not too cheap...
Try at www.bynet.co.il

It was only the preliminary suggestion, and not a rule set. I would spell it
so:" There is a USR modem that at least does not cost 100...150 NIS as it's
neighbors on the shelf, so it CAN be worth to call Office Depot and ask them

Real modems..yea I forgot anything that linux didn't think about first
isn't real?
winmodem is just another chip no better than the new intel mother boards
that uses memory for the onboard screen card.
pctel chips (as in most win modems) sould work with kenrel 2.4.0
so you can just downlad the newest test version (2 million and one or
something like that). and try it
hey not it's real again.

btw most computer stores I know (in jerusalem) can get you an hardware
modem with no problem.

A modem is a modulator-demodulator. as DSP-less "modem" does not
modulate, and does not demodulate, so can hardly be called a modem. This
is regardless of whether a driver for Linux or windows exists or not.

winmodem is just another chip no better than the new intel mother boards
that uses memory for the onboard screen card.

Of course the situation you describe, is indeed like a winmodem - a
compromise between price and performance. I think the trouble and
performance lose of an i810 chipset MB is not worth the price, so I have
another one. I also think that the troubles and performance lose of a
winmodem is not worth the price, so I want a real modem. The problem is
that unlike a MB, this is much harder to find.

I didn't hear about it, but he could be right..
Anyway.. 2.4.0 is called unstable because it's still a test version. in
fact 2.4.0 is stable, but it's not out yet :-) . 2.4.0-test?? is
"unstable". but it's very stable anyway. the current version
(2.4.0-test12 for example) are probably very close to the stable 2.4.0..

Almost no winmodem has an 'external' linux driver. I still didn't hear
about this 2.4.0 support.. but about the drivers from linmodems.org, the
only REAL, open sourced driver is for lucent modems. all the others are
binaries that works only with a specific (usually very old) version of the

It seems that PCtel, Lucent, and Cirrus Logic have linux drivers, which
makes most modems supported. Cirrus drivers are also free.
