HP Linux support on laptops?

2004-03-04 Thread linux-il
Hello,

I've been offered an HP laptop for a good price and when I called HP
Israel to ask
about Linux support they told me that HP does not support Linux on ANY
laptop
of theirs. At least in Israel.

That doesn't quite fit what I see in http://tinyurl.com/26yeb, which
lists some
models with full support for RH, Mandrake, Suse and TurboLinux.

So what's the deal? Just forget about supported HP laptops with Linux?
Should I stick to IBM's?
(It's very disappointing not just because of the good price but also
because I heard that
HP made 2.5 Billion (10^9) $ last year just frmo Linux sales).

Thanks,

That's the strange thing - their web site claims that they DO support
some models,
but the people in Israel say they won't.

Hi,

If you're looking for official Linux support on HP laptops, then forget it -
here and in US (unless of-course you're a big HP customer which orders 500+
machines from them). Same deal with IBM (go find official support for their
ACPI, etc)...

If you're planning to buy an HP notebook, then I would suggest to search some
forums, see if anyone previously had installed Linux on top of the same
notebook model and what quirks he had to pull to make it work. 99% chances
that with Linux - you're on your own with your notebook problems (software
side).

Thanks,
Hetz

Hi,

Most of HP's laptops support Linux without any problems, with the
possible exception of the HSF modem that most of their models have.
Also, look out for poorly supported video cards. My Presario has an ATI
IGP-340 video card, with poor to no support for the S-VHS port in X
(yes, I know about gatos).

But you can forget about any kind of support from HP personel. The best
advice they seem to be able to give is Sorry, only Windows can
possibly run on any of our laptops. I suggest you restore the original
installation, and see if the problem still occurs.

Actually also be careful also when asking for hardware support. I have
no experience with hp, but calling the US sony support with an
overheating (and later dead) laptop, I made the mistake of mentioning
that I got the temperature reading of Linux since I could find a way to
do it on XP and I immediately got the answer that they don't support
Linux (didn't help trying to convince them it was a hardware problem,
had to call again and not mention Linux).

Also, it could be that the Israeli support don't support Linux despite
international support doing so (again no experience with HP).

Your best bet is probably to searching the web first on the model and/or
components to see if it has linux support. Main problems to look for
would probably be modem, acpi, sound, graphic acceleration (integrated
memory cards I think are more problematic. I believe ati cards are
usually ok, newer but not newest are supported).

I believe other things usually work ok.

 Hetz

This would not be a first time tech support staff do not know their own
company policy

If you are in the mood to confuse them, send them the web page.
If you want to confuse them more, you can then ask a technical question.
HP made it's linux money not from direct sales, but channeled sales,
such as HP Consulting jobs.

You will also note, that while HP provided a press release that they
support Debian, it is not on their certification list, not do their
provide any of their software as DEBs.
