Hi Again,

I am still not sure what exactly you need from me.

Do you mean step-by-step instructions to make a bootable USB stick to
re-flash a BIOS?

Kind of a case study for what I did?

We just called IBM in regard to Ori's BIOS update. It appears that the
BIOS update is available only for Windows. I called IBM, but the
tech said that there is a problem with the computers, and asked that
I call back soon. I asked that they call _me_ back. I stress that this
is a _business_ machine (from International _Business_ Machines, or
IBM) and such downtime is unacceptable. I will _not_ randomly call
them and hope that their computers are working at that same moment.
The tech agrees to call me back, but he cannot accept a non-US phone
number. This is not acceptable from _International_ Business Machines.
I asked to speak with a supervisor and although she had no idea what
Windows is, she suggested that I call 1-800-426-7378 to speak to a
real tech.

Is this what we should expect of IBM now? I think that they should
drop the I and the B, and just call themselves M.

If you have another computer on the network, you might consider a
network install, if your BIOS/NIC support PXE.

The computer already has an old version of Debian running on it.

You can try and add to the grub menu the kernel and initrd of the Ubuntu
installation, and if all goes well that should do it. Copy the files to
/boot, duplicate an entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst, change the kernel and
initrd lines to point to the files you copied, and add to the kernel
command line whatever's that in the Ubuntu installer (you can find this
out e.g. by looking at their network installation instructions, if you
can't look at the boot files on the DOK). However, if you have a problem,
you won't be able to boot to some rescue CD to solve it. If it's an
important machine, I think I'd first make sure I have some other boot
device with useful rescue media.

Have you searched for a BIOS update that would let you boot from USB?

By the way: did anybody have any experience with UNetbootin?
It is not needed for Ori (because the built-in solution of Ubuntu is
enough for him), but I ask this question for generic cases, where there
 is no built-in solution.

I have used it but the install failed due to a bug in Ubuntu, the
install failed in the same manner when installed from CD.

Are you sure the DOK actually works? It may also be that the DOK does
not work properly with the computer, I have had that problem, but that
was a long time ago. Make sure it is directly connected to the
computer, I have had trouble using a hub when booting from a DOK.

I did a quick web search and found:

http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dpelleg/X31_freebsd.html

For the purposes of installing, I think it is safe to assume it works the
same with Linux as FreeBSD.

The web page says:

Straightforward, using an external USB CD-ROM.

If you remember my post answering your question, I suggested that an external
DVD drive would do.

I repeat my offer, if you are in Jerusalem, you are welcome to come here with
it. I have both a working Ubuntu DOK, and an external USB DVD drive.

Don't forget to check the cd integrity before you create a DOK and the dok
integrity after you create it - its not fun to find out that the install
failed just because of that.
