Re: [SLL] Help with dual boot setup
Hi Randyl, I want to make sure I understand correctly. Problem:When you boot up there is not a menu selection to choose Linux. I have done this before with windows 10 and CentOS. When I did, I chose to install and use GRUB as the boot loader. I think if you do that you will have a lot easier time configuring it to use a particular default or manually select the OS on boot up. But... I just went and read some SUSE documentation and it says it will not install GRUB on machine with UEFI unless Compatibility Support Module (CSM) is enable. Here is where I got that: https://www.suse.com/documentation/sled11/book_sle_admin/data/cha_grub.html If this was me, I think I would make sure I have CSM and then install SUSE again and choose to put in on the MBR (I hope I have the term correctly used). I think trying to make the widows boot loader do it will be too much of a headache. Background: 1. Last month my old linux box crashed, refused to boot, hard drive corrupted. 2. Bought an HP Pavilion 550-227c desktop at Costco with Win10 Home installed on 2TB drive. Everything works as it should. 3. Installed openSUSE Leap 42.1, resized windows partition, all the default linux partitions for swap, boot, root, etc. Everything works as it should except sound (RealTek HD, missing special driver maybe?). 4. Rebooted into Win10 and everything there still seems to work, except . . . 5. There is no option or opportunity to reboot into Linux that I can find. 6. So obviously I don't know wtf I'm doing and now I'm trying to learn more than I ever wanted to know about UEFI and new secure boot process. 7. Costco Tech Support was no help and handed me off to Microsoft, which was even worse. 8. I did figure out how to run bcdedit (boot config data editor) in windows, but I still don't know how to get a boot menu so a linux boot is an option. I do know the linux installation is still there, so I could, if necessary, reinstall linux, but rather not. Help? In Seattle, I hope? Thanks, Randyl

I have no idea how Windows 10 works, in older versions of windows you could boot up from an install/repair disk - open a console (cmd) and then try using a program called Bootrec (bootrec.exe /fixmb ) later versions of Windows you can start up in "safe mode" and then run console - same procedure... this is a good link for the process: http://www.digitalcitizen.life/command-prompt-fix-issues-your-boot-records I really hope that this helps you :) Andre
