Re: Ubuntu 9.04 install - direct it to empty hard drive?
Hi, Out of interest have you tried unplugging (or disabling in the bios) the other hard drives then doing the install? I always do this out of habit so I can't destroy any data. Probably a silly question, but are you using the "alternate" Ubuntu disc? This distribution has an "expert" mode that gives more options along the way. 2009/6/19 Bryce Stenberg : > Hi, > > As part of keeping our options open I have been permitted to play with linux > on Friday afternoons at work to become familiar with the OS. > So for starters I chose to install Ubuntu 9.04 on my work pc, which has > three disks and is running Windows XP. > Disk1 has 2 ntfs partitons - one a 2 GB active partition for booting, the > 2nd 198GB with windows install I don't want touched. > Disk2 has 80GB - I want linux on this disk (currently formatted Ext4 and > empty). > Disk3 is 1TB - but is over half full with various virtual machines. > > When I run the ubuntu install from cd, no matter what I've tried, it seems > to want to install itself to my second partition on disk1 - adding extra > partitions and resizing. > I don't want this partition touched. > > Can anyone please tell me how to get it installed to Disk2? > > Thanks, > Bryce Stenberg. > > > > DISCLAIMER: If you have received this email in error, please notify us > immediately by reply email, facsimile or collect telephone call to +64 3 > 9641200 and destroy the original. RE: Ubuntu 9.04 install - direct it to empty hard drive?
I have not yet installed ubuntu. Maybe it is going wrong as when it gets to the 'Prepare disk space' page it says "This computer has no operating systems on it" while showing a disk graph for /dev/sdb1 (which is my terabyte disk). The default option is set at "Install them side by side, choosing between them each startup" which is what I want. But not on sdb1. If I choose 'specify partitions manually (advanced)' then the wanted disk is /dev/sdc1. The boot loader needs to be on /dev/sda1. But this installer does not seem to have options for picking what should go where? I did try googling for help before asking here. I was hoping someone may have some insight into why it is going wrong on my pc? -Bryce. > -Original Message- > From: jim.cheet...@gmail.com [mailto:jim.cheet...@gmail.com] > On Behalf Of Jim Cheetham > Sent: Friday, 19 June 2009 2:37 p.m. > To: linux-users@it.canterbury.ac.nz > Subject: Re: Ubuntu 9.04 install - direct it to empty hard drive? > > There is a lot documentation for Ubuntu ... for example this > page may help ... > > https://help.ubuntu.com/community/How_to_dual-boot_Ubuntu_and_ > XP_after_installing_them_separately_on_two_HDs > > -jim > DISCLAIMER: If you have received this email in error, please notify us immediately by reply email, facsimile or collect telephone call to +64 3 9641200 and destroy the original. When you partition it, you should be able to state what the partition is for, ie mount as /, forma as ext3, etc. Once this is done and saved, it'll use it. TBH, I'd disconnect the important disks, and just leave the one you want to partition as linux. That'll give you an extra level of safety when starting out... Oh, yes, I've been there! The install goes on to whichever partition gets used as "/". Tell one of these partitions that you want to mount /. If you are manually partitioning, I recommend 10GB for /, GB for /home, and you can make swap on a partition if you want to (2xRAM seems to be reasonable) or just make swap from files on a filesystem later if you need it. -jim

There is a lot documentation for Ubuntu ... for example this page may help ... https://help.ubuntu.com/community/How_to_dual-boot_Ubuntu_and_XP_after_installing_them_separately_on_two_HDs -jim

Yes - that let me partition my empty drive - but nowhere could I find a way of selecting this drive for the install. -bryce. > -Original Message- > From: steve [mailto:st...@greengecko.co.nz] > Sent: Friday, 19 June 2009 2:32 p.m. > To: linux-users@it.canterbury.ac.nz > Subject: Re: Ubuntu 9.04 install - direct it to empty hard drive? > > Have you tried the manual partition method??? > > Steve > > On Fri, 2009-06-19 at 14:28 +1200, Bryce Stenberg wrote: > > Hi, > > > > As part of keeping our options open I have been permitted > to play with > > linux on Friday afternoons at work to become familiar with the OS. > > So for starters I chose to install Ubuntu 9.04 on my work pc, which > > has three disks and is running Windows XP. > > Disk1 has 2 ntfs partitons - one a 2 GB active partition > for booting, > > the 2nd 198GB with windows install I don't want touched. > > Disk2 has 80GB - I want linux on this disk (currently formatted Ext4 > > and empty). > > Disk3 is 1TB - but is over half full with various virtual machines. > > > > When I run the ubuntu install from cd, no matter what I've tried, it > > seems to want to install itself to my second partition on disk1 - > > adding extra partitions and resizing. > > I don't want this partition touched. > > > > Can anyone please tell me how to get it installed to Disk2? > > > > Thanks, > > Bryce Stenberg. > > > > > > DISCLAIMER: If you have received this email in error, > please notify us > > immediately by reply email, facsimile or collect telephone > call to +64 > > 3 9641200 and destroy the original. Have you tried the manual partition method??? Ubuntu 9.04 install - direct it to empty hard drive?
Hi, As part of keeping our options open I have been permitted to play with linux on Friday afternoons at work to become familiar with the OS. So for starters I chose to install Ubuntu 9.04 on my work pc, which has three disks and is running Windows XP. Disk1 has 2 ntfs partitons - one a 2 GB active partition for booting, the 2nd 198GB with windows install I don't want touched. Disk2 has 80GB - I want linux on this disk (currently formatted Ext4 and empty). Disk3 is 1TB - but is over half full with various virtual machines. When I run the ubuntu install from cd, no matter what I've tried, it seems to want to install itself to my second partition on disk1 - adding extra partitions and resizing. I don't want this partition touched. Can anyone please tell me how to get it installed to Disk2? Thanks, Bryce Stenberg.
