Re: SCO Sucks

2003-08-14 Thread Tony Alfrey
The interesting thing is that this whole thing actually made the local
public radio station with a story from National Public Radio (NPR). Of
course, these sorts of public radio stories are always behind the
curve but it described linux as being an operating system developed by
a collective of internet-based developers, mentioned that SCO had
purchased some rights to the Unix OS, that SCO had claimed that some
as-yet-undisclosed portions of Unix code had been copied into linux and
finally that SCO was now expecting linux users to pay a license fee.

The story then went on to say that NPR reporters had contacted some
developers of the linux code who then said that, if SCO would tell them
which portions of the code had been so copied, that they would then
rewrite these portions of offending code in about a day.

I was driving my car and laughed so hard I nearly drove off the road.

This is like their licensing for UnixWare. Of course the difference is that
Linux supports lots more hardware and 3rd party apps. I think this is simply
a way to offer Linux without worry that it will eat into UnixWare sales,
which had to be the case for OpenLinux. We made that switch. It cost SCO.
This will stop the switch to Linux. Oh, I mean to SCO's Linux, anyway.

The problem is that as soon as SCO make public which code is effected (if
any), it will be reimplemented. Making the need for a license go away.

OOC, is any of the IP SCO squalk about for the 'general idea' of the things,
or is it just for the specific implementation. I have not really sorted that
out.

Any judge in their right mind will be able to see through this. Politics
aside, the judge would have to concede that SCO's tactics have been completely
self-serving and not in accord with a desire to resolve anything. Since the
code is already public, listing code that has been allegedly infringed upon
would not in any way further any possible damages. No, this is SCO's attempts
to make money off of Linux since they were unable to do so using more
conventional means (ie. SELLING IT!)

i would be guessing fear, and the desire to save money. If people perceive that
they will be saving money by getting in early, they might go for it. Most will not
question the need to purchase, unless they are better informed.

If MS or Novell, or someone else walked into a comercial business and stated
you need to buy X ammount of licences to be legal, most would not question
would they, especially if they thought that they were getting a special rate, and
would avoid prosecution.

If they get some peple paying money havent the had a win ?? even if it fails in
court ??
