(This is in kdm, but should work the same in xdm. And I'm sure there's a way to do similar with startx.) In /etc/X11/xdm/Xmodmap I put: keycode 115=F13 keycode 116=F13 This maps the winders keys to F13. Then in kde I can tell it that I want F13 to be a shortcut to the menu bar. I also have buttons labled www, mail, and search on this keyboard, so I mapped them the same way: keycode 178=F15 keycode 236=F16 keycode 229=F17 Then F15 starts the browser, F16 starts mail, and F17 doesn't do anything because I didn't have a use for 'search'. You can use showkey or something similar to see the keyboard scan codes (the first number above) that go with a button. Kde makes it easy to use keys as shortcuts, I don't know about other WMs. One caveat, with this setup I wasn't able to get the 'menu' key to act like a right mouse click. Also, only one window key works (the left one which is first above). Dave ___ Linux-users mailing list Archives, Digests, etc at http://linux.nf/mailman/listinfo/linux-users

I think it's one of the unfinished details like numlock and getting Alt-217 or whatever to return the euro, which my installations NEVER do :-(. I can't get any of that stuff with the Alt key. I'm using a pre (expletive deleted) 95 keyboard with NO such keys. You can land a start menu in some op systems with Ctrl-Alt-Esc, so I don't have the problem really. I do get hung up on the graphics thingh though. We're going over to the euro here in a month, and it would be nice. -- Regards, Declan Moriarty Applied Researches - Ireland's Foremost Electronic Hardware Genius A Slightly Serious(TM) Company Success covers a multitude of blunders - G.B. Workstation 3.1 on a Compaq 1278
I just finished up installing Workstation on my boss's COMPAQ PRESARIO 1278 and thought I'd make a few public notes... This isn't a good piece of harware to install Linux on. I had all kinds of problems with the via chips in this laptop and APM/APCI is still kind of iffy... Anyway, the smoothest sound setup is via ALSA. Once I loaded the needed packages, it all came together. Prior to ALSA it seemd as though sending data o the sound device caused a bunch of other little problems... draggy mouse syndrome, etc... ALSA fixed it. Getting APCI/APM to work is another problem. And I would most dearly appreciate anyones input on this. I've got 2.4.16 with APCI in the kernel (APM was a dud). I've got the apci daemon running, but still can't get it to recognize a low battery, suspend, etc... If anyone has a step-x-step... a real good hand holder on this one... I'm for you. That's it really, everything else works except the windows buttons. One of these days I'll have to find something todo with them. -- ** Registered Linux User Number 185956 http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=ensafe=offgroup=linux 12:50pm up 1 day, 23:52, 3 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 ___ Linux-users mailing list Archives, Digests, etc at http://linux.nf/mailman/listinfo/linux-users
