[pfSense] Adding Ethernetports

2014-09-19 Thread Brian Caouette
I added a dual port nic to my pfsense box and it doesn't show the
additional ports.

The new nic doesn't show anywhere. I am using a PowerEdge 2850 and an
Intel Card. I am also using vmware on the machine.

Any ideas what may be going on?

check dmesg and pciconf -lv.
If its not seen at all then try different slots and try to verify that
card/slot is working.

Your pfSense is running on a VM ... correct?

Does vmware recognize the nic? I know some versions of esx need custom drivers
for even some intel NIC's.

This is definitely worth a try.

As an aside, one of the first things I do with a fresh pfSense install
is to revert back to the 'traditional' skin with the menu fully expanded
in a column on the left. I find it works much better with tabbed
browsing (ability to work down the list and open each page in a new tab,
especially with old/slow hardware like ALIX boards where page
transitions can be time consuming).

Kind regards,

Chris

It's 34a2 Aurora version in Debian GNU/Linux 8.0 (testing, preparing
for freezing).

I found no help such ways.

Reboot from physical and logical connection with router/firewall does
work - pfsense goes full circle of reboot and shows up well but with
menu layout still as bad as before. The last menu item in one main
menu line ends with Gold (pfsense Gold). Help run away from
last position to under the first System item (the images prove the
remarks).

You don't have a pfSense problem at all, you have a VMware problem.
Suggest you visit any one of hundreds of VMware support forums or lists to find
out how to manage virtual networks.
There are also a lot of old threads on the pfSense forum discussing this.

I have had mixed results trying to find support for hardware that is not on the
vmWare HCL and often spend way too much time hunting for solutions. You are
much better off sticking with officially supported hardware.

That being said, This link may have the drivers that you are looking for ...
https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/details?downloadGroup=DT-ESXI55-INTEL-IGB-42168productId=353

Should probably take this to one of the vmware support groups.

There's also the unofficial VMware ESXi white-box HCL, but it hasn't really
been updated since v4.x.
Agreed that if this is anything more than a test system, stick with the HCL and
a support contract. Been there, done that, have the scars to prove it ...
