Hello,

sorry, I could not join the meeting today.

I reached out to our projects and got feedback from some already.

I added version information if provided to our spreadsheet

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Q5BaEgQtgw4O1bXyeWMlM8XtAOhUgcjZ7Y2O0FZc2H0/edit?hl=en_GB#gid=1335412455

I will wait for more feedback and will report next week about the
status.

Starting build cycle for OSGeoLive 12 and call for translators

28 February 2018

Are you interested in joining our Open Source GIS experience? The build
cycle for the next OSGeoLive release, 12.0, is going to start in 3 weeks
at OSGeo Code Sprint 2018 in Bonn [1]. The final version is planned to
be ready at 2nd August 2018 in time for FOSS4G 2018 in Dar Es Saalam
[2]. Have a look at our schedule for the the detailed steps [3].

Till then we have many challenges - from simple to challenging, to help
describe and train people in the value of Open Source GIS.

Translation
-
Are you multi-lingual and interested in Open Source GIS? At the end of
2017 we moved the translation of OSGeoLive to transifex [4] and we still
have many open translations. How about help translate one or two of the
Project Overviews or Quickstarts? Have a look at our translation guide
[5] to get involved.

Packages
-
Are you a programmer or packager with experience in one of the Open
Source GIS applications. Are you interested in helping update a project
to the latest version.

Join us at OSGeo Code Sprint 2018
-
There will be the OSGeo Code Sprint 2018 in Bonn from 18th till 25th of
March 2018 [1]. Some people from OSGeoLive team will be there. We'd love
to see you, whether you are new to Open Source or an experienced old
timer.

Could you please have a look and give feedback or edit the page?

Today at our IRC meeting I will not be able to join. So maybe you can
give feedback via mail and I could send the press release tomorrow.

Have a good meeting and see you next week.

2017-12-21 Thread Astrid Emde (OSGeo)

Dear developers,

OSGeo Code Sprint will come to Bonn (Germany) in March 2018 [1]. You are
invited to join us.

http://www.basecamp-bonn.com/)

- Accomodation Booking System:
http://www.bonn-region.de/events/fossgis.html

Interested? So read more about why & where & when...

The Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) has a long tradition of
organizing code sprints for developers of Open Source GIS software.

For several years the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) [1] has
been organizing a yearly Code Sprint, a come-together of the "C Tribe"
OSGeo projects - now we call it OSGeo Code Sprint. Leading developers of
projects like GDAL, PostGIS, MapServer, QGIS, PDAL, and many more get
together to discuss new ideas, hack, decide, tackle large geospatial
problems & more & simply to have fun.

In 2018 the OSGeo Code Sprint will come again to Europe after Vienna
(2014) [6] and Paris in (2016) [4]. This makes is possible to embed
European developers and users.
The tradition started in 2011 with Toronto [11], then New York [10],
Montreal [9], Island Wood [8] and Boston [7]. And went to Philadelphia
in 2015 [5] and last year to Daytona Beach (2017) [3]. Find a list of
code sprints at [12].

OSGeo Code Sprint 2018 in Bonn
--
This year the international code sprint of the OSGeo will take place
from 19 to 25 March 2018 simultaneously with the FOSSGIS Conference 2018
in Bonn. We offer a setting so that individual projects can meet for
their code sprint.

The code sprint will take place at BaseCamp in Bonn. During the FOSS4G
2016 in Bonn we have already organized a code sprint at this location,
in which about 100 developers worked on the open source projects every
day. (https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/FOSS4G_2016_Code_Sprint). It is a
really awesome location. Codesprint and accommodations are combined in
one hall and you will live in a caravan, bus or cabin.

Check out http://www.basecamp-bonn.com/ for details about the venue.

Acommodations
-
Working zones will be created for you in the breakfast area and
hallways. Healthy and not-so-healthy catering of drinks and snacks will
be provided by us. Participation in codesprint is free of charge.
However, overnight stays will have to be reserved and paid for by
yourself.

BaseCamp is an indoor campground and offers different caravans, night
sleepers, Airstreams, a Trabant, Volkswagen transporter and other places
to stay.

If you prefer to stay in a hotel - no problem. Bonnox Boardinghouse is
close-by. And you also find many great hotels in Bonn.

Book your room soon
---
As the accommodations are as well available to FOSSGIS 2018 participants
we will make an effort to make advance booking possible for you a few
days ahead, to ensure you have the opportunity to sleep on-site and wrap
up the evenings jointly.
Therefore, please book your accomondation as soon as possible via the
booking system http://www.bonn-region.de/events/fossgis.html

Register for the OSGeo Code Sprint
-
And don't forget to sign up in the OSGeo wiki at our OSGeo Code Spint
2018 page:

 https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Code_Sprint_2018

This is important for us, not only for the planning of snacks and
drinks.

The OSGeo Code Sprint is open to all who wish to participate in one or
more projects. There is always plenty to do – it’s not all about
programming. Translation, documentation, feedback, discussions, testing
– all this is also important for projects so everyone is cordially
invited to attend the codesprint!

The Codesprint Organizing Team is looking forward to your coming!

[OSGeoLive] OSGeo-Live Press Release 81: OSGeoLive enters OSGeo Incubation

2017-11-13 Thread Astrid Emde (OSGeo)

OSGeoLive enters OSGeo Incubation!

6 November 2017 - The OSGeo Foundation and OSGeoLive Team are pleased to
announce that the OSGeoLive project has officially entered the OSGeo
Foundation's incubation process. By completing this incubation process,
the OSGeoLive team intend to officially demonstrate the level of rigour,
quality and sustainability of the project.

As noted by Angelos Tzotsos, chair of the OSGeoLive Project Steering
Committee, "With the OSGeoLive project coming up to being 9 years old,
we felt it was time to audit our processes against best practice, and
demonstrate our commitment to quality".

Jody Garnett, incubation mentor, welcomes the challenge: "Incubation is
a chance to review how the project works, emphasizing being geospatial,
open source, and fair. Incubation can be done very quickly, and I am
hopeful that the OSGeoLive project can set a new standard.".

The team is living up to their enthusiastic reputation and has already

collaborating with our foundation projects, and building connections
with the wider geospatial open source community.

The team produces a bootable USB or Virtual Machine offers a "first

The new OSGeo web site should link directly to the docs, making the

Dear OSGeo-Live contributors,

As you might know, we are working on translating OSGeo-Live
Documentation using the Transifex Platform.

We choose that in order to provide a better translation experience
than the old .rst files and git one.
It will help us doc building process of course, but we also add
machine translation capabilities (thanks to ) to help
translators.

It adds a review part too, that was sometimes not possible with the
old system (when the merger didn't speak the language), so it will
help us provide better quality documentation.

All that said, the platform is online [1], ready to test. So we need
early translators to battle test it with several languages, writing
systems and such.

We are in the moment where we can start testing the infrastructure
and our first draft of the translator guide [2].
For testing the infrastructure, translated files are needed, you
can translate based on the priority mark, or on the amount of lines
to be translated, or complete a translation that someone else
started, or start with your project. Note that we already marked
files that don't need translation. Some feedback about the guide is

Hi Nicolas,

Press release is fine. I've made a few changes [0]. I work on the
concept that "Less words get read more". Assume most people will
only read the first sentence or two.

I suspect that it would be useful to set up an
OSGeo-Live-Translators email list, which I suggest setting up
before sending out this "call to action" for translators. Send
something like:

"I notice that you have translated OSGeo Live before. Are you
still keen to stay involved? (I hope so.) We are setting up an
OSGeo-Live-Translators email list, would it be ok if we included
you on the list?"

Cheers, Cameron

Dear OSGeo-Live contributors,

As you might know, we are working on translating OSGeo-Live
Documentation using the Transifex Platform.

We choose that in order to provide a better translation
experience than the old .rst files and git one.
It will help us doc building process of course, but we also add
machine translation capabilities (thanks to ) to
help translators.

It adds a review part too, that was sometimes not possible with
the old system (when the merger didn't speak the language), so it
will help us provide better quality documentation.

All that said, the platform is online [1], ready to test. So we
need early translators to battle test it with several languages,
writing systems and such.

We are in the moment where we can start testing the
infrastructure and our first draft of the translator guide [2].
For testing the infrastructure, translated files are needed, you
can translate based on the priority mark, or on the amount of
lines to be translated, or complete a translation that someone
else started, or start with your project. Note that we already
marked files that don't need translation.
Some feedback about the guide is 100% useful. (probably the guide
is more for a reviewer than for a translator)

our translator guide [2]

[Live-demo] please create a new project flyer for your project with the new branding till FOSS4G Boston

2017-07-27 Thread Astrid Emde (OSGeo)

Hello OSGeo projects,

it is not a long time till FOSS4G Boston where we will have an OSGeo
booth with the new OSGeo logo and new flyers for the projects.

This is why we need your help! Please create a new project flyer for
your OSGeo project with the new branding. We try to arrange it that the
flyer will be handed out at OSGeo booth in Boston from August 14-19,
2017 (http://2017.foss4g.org/)

The current flyer are out of date. You find them here as a template.
https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/browser/marketing/flyer/project_brochure_pdfs
https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/browser/marketing/flyer/

You also could take information from OSGeo-Live to setup your new flyer.
https://live.osgeo.org/en/overview/overview.html

You find the new branding material at:
https://github.com/OSGeo/osgeo/tree/master/marketing

Have a look at the GeoforAll flyer or OSGeo-Live flyer. You can see how
a flyer could look like

https://github.com/OSGeo/osgeo/blob/master/marketing/print/geoforall_a4.pdf
https://github.com/lucadelu/osgeo/blob/osgeolive/marketing/print/osgeolive_names_a4.svg

The best way is to fork the repository on GutHub and make a pull request
with your new flyer at the end.

These are the steps for you:

1. How to set up the fonts (on linux create the folder
$HOME/.local/share/fonts and copy the 4 .ttf there)
* Download  from
https://github.com/OSGeo/osgeo/tree/master/marketing/branding/fonts

2. Take the svg template and modify it with the content of your project
https://github.com/OSGeo/osgeo/blob/master/marketing/print/osgeo_a4.svg
You can modify the svg either with a texteditor or f.e. inkscape.

3. In the end you can create a pull request to the osgeo repository

We try to organize it so the flyer will be printed and present at the
OSGeo booth

Thanks for your help.

If you have questions. Please ask on the list or contact me or Luca
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/User:Lucadelu

PS: Luca finished the OSGeo-Live flyer and wants to work on the
Zoo-Project and MapServer flyer too.

Hello Luca,

thanks for your mail and the drafts.

With the OSGeo-Live team we had a long discussion about the new logo at
an irc meeting. Everyone had a different preference about the logo.

The result was, that we will postpone the final decision to after the
release of 11.0.

Let's see whether we can talk about it next monday at the irc meeting.

HI Thorsten,

we can meet and discuss the next steps next week at FOSS4G Europe.

Some people from OSGeo-live team will be there.

Maybe you have time to come to the code sprint at 22.July.

Please don't wait for the next deadline to work on including Hale in
the OSGeo live release. The major technical work seems to be providing
a version that does not include the jre and uses openjdk provided by
ubuntu. I tried downloading hale from your site and removed the jre
folder. I've done a few preliminary tests (on debian) and I didn't see
differences compared to the included jre. It is perhaps a good idea to
test this a bit more, and run your unit tests against openjdk as well.
If any changes need to be made it is better that these are tested
thoroughly and included in the project rather than branching of for
OSGeo live.

Kind Regards,
Johan

Discussion on relationship between projects and osgeo

+

We have an answer about “Live” - it is a live
demonstration of software, rather than a static demo.

+

We have a strong relationship and we could ask OSGeo
Live
to use the OSGeo logo unaltered, however that does not
answer the general problem (of how to work with sub
brands)

You may remember me asking what 'live" was meaning for osgeo live,
judging from early art assets in github (the svn banner had hidden
early prototypes of the logo). The thinking was "pulse" with hearts
and heart rate monitors tracking which projects were actually alive.
The other meaning I could come up with was a live demo, rather than
a static demo.

Both Marc (strong marketing background) and the graphics designer
(really proud of the new logo and visuals). They wanted to ask if
OSGeo Live would be willing to use the following:

[2] https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B08AjQ2hqLipZjJsSG12a19HcWM
[2]

This is an interesting tradeoff:
- because no other software project is being asked to update their
logo (only include an OSGeo project logo on their website).
- the tight relationship with OSGeo foundation is causing this
request, so a mark at how central osgeo-live is to our foundation
- I will support whatever direction the project chooses to take
(hesitate to offer my own opinion since I can see advantages both
ways).

I have also had this question come up recently - why is OSGeo-Live
not an OSGeo project. The answer is simply that you have not asked
and acquired a mentor.
- You are of course welcome to apply as an OSGeo Community project
(and get approval right away - summer voting habits permitting)
- Entering incubation can also be done, but we need to line up a
mentor first.

Many of the direct "osgeo foundation" activities just use the

A few sub brands (GeoForAll, OSGeo Live, local chapters) are
expected to work with the design elements and create their own

[Live-demo] OSGeo-Live Press Release 78: OSGeo-Live 11.0 - Need help translating and testing

2017-07-04 Thread Astrid Emde (OSGeo)

Hello,

we're looking for help testing OSGeo-Live 11.0 beta1 and translating
docs.

In particular, we need help:

1. Testing. Run Quickstarts and verify they work. Join us on
irc://freenode.net#osgeolive this weekend, 8 & 9 July 2017, for our
testing sprint.

2. Check if any new features need to be added to Project Overviews [2]

3. Update review status in our spreadsheet [4]. (It really helps us know
if an application has been reviewed, and by who).

4. Translate docs that have been updated. (Note, our spreadsheet [4]
lists a number of retired projects which need updating in the
overview.rst contents page and metrics.rst page.) You find the
documentation at [2]. Read how to get the documentation fom github and
how to make pull request [3].

OSGeo-Live is scheduled to be the default installation at FOSS4G 2017
workshops. We strongly urge all workshop leaders to test OSGeo-Live now
and provide feedback, while there is still time to tweak anything
required for the workshop.

[Live-demo] OSGeo-Live Press release 77: What's in the OSGeo-Live 11.0 reboot?

2017-05-29 Thread Astrid Emde (OSGeo)

29 May 2017

In line with the OSGeo-Live reboot [1] we have identified the following
actions:

We will only support a 64 bit distribution, (32 bit will be built but
not tested or officially supported).

We will no longer provide:
* Windows installers,
* Write ups for OGC Standards,
* Write ups for libraries without a user interface (on a case-by-case
basis)

Stray projects: We haven't got a point of contact for these projects. If
you know something about this project, and can help review docs, then
please consider adopting the project. Without a volunteer, we will need
to consider retiring them from OSGeo-Live. Work commitment is low, kudos
and karma very high :)

* openlayers
* osgearth
* gmt
* iris
* jupyter
* JOSM (OpenStreetMap editor http://www.openstreetmap.org/about)
* proj4
* mb-system
* zygrib

Projects recommended to be retired from OSGeo-Live:
* geokettle
* geomajas
* javaworldwind
* kosmo
* mapnik
* pywps (quickstart broken)
* sahana
* tinyows
* ushahidi
* viking

Remaining projects:
* Most projects have at least minor tweaks required for the docs, some
have outright errors.
* We are asking each project to, check their project overview, run the
application on an OSGeo-Live VM (10.5 or a recent nightly build), run
every step of the quickstart, update if required, and tell us when done.
* Once verified, we will add the project back into the OSGeo-Live 11.0
builds.
* We will call on all projects to test their projects and quickstarts
again in an OSGeo-Live 11.0 beta.

For specific project comments, see the OSGeo-Live status spreadsheet,
column T "11.0 Comment", and column U "10.5 Doc Review".

Ideally the latest 5.x.

Mapbender3 can now handle PHP 7. So we would be fine with moving to
PHP 7.

PHP MapScript doesn't support PHP 7 yet, that will be included in the
upcoming MapServer 7.2 release.

Bas

[Live-demo] OSGeo-Live Presse release 76: upcoming OSGeo-Live 11.0 - what applications and versions should be included?

2017-05-09 Thread Astrid Emde (OSGeo)

Hello,

we are asking all OSGeo-Live projects to let us know:
1. What versions of projects should be on OSGeo-Live?
2. Are there any new projects which should be on OSGeo-Live?
3. Are there any projects which should be dropped from OSGeo-Live?

As per last announcement [1], with our next OSGeo-LIve release we intend
to focus on quality, and as such will be asking each project:

1. To help install the latest stable version of the software.
2. To verify Project Overview and Quickstarts are both up to date and in
line with our documentation standards.

You can see results of our first pass review in our status spreadsheet
[2], column T "11.0 comment", and column U "10.0 Doc Review".

[Live-demo] Reducing scope of OSGeo-Live for next 11.0 release

2017-04-17 Thread Astrid Emde (OSGeo)

Reducing scope of OSGeo-Live for next 11.0 release

18 April 2017

For our next OSGeo-Live release, 11.0, we propose to reduce the number
of packages included, and only support a 64 bit distribution, (32 bit
will be built but not tested or officially supported).

Factors leading to this suggestion include:
1. Some projects have dwindling communities and momentum.
2. Increased OSGeo-Live scope has increased our core maintenance and
testing.
3. Reduced engagement from projects (partly due to less core time spent
reaching out to projects)

4. Missing our first release milestone in 9 years.

From our options of reduce quality, become more efficient, increase
volunteer engagement, find a sponsor to support core activities, and
reduce scope, reducing scope is our most viable and acceptable option.
Other ideas are welcomed.

Questions we will ask in assessing which projects to keep include:
1. Is there an ACTIVE OSGeo-Live liaison person/people for the project?
Prior list is copied to "Contact" column at:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Q5BaEgQtgw4O1bXyeWMlM8XtAOhUgcjZ7Y2O0FZc2H0/edit?hl=en_GB#gid=2014800150
2. Has the Project Overview and Quickstart been reviewed and are they
current and complete?
3. Do OpenHub metrics reflect an active and healthy community:
https://live.osgeo.org/en/metrics.html

4. Is the project being updated on OSGeo-Live with each release?

Re: [Live-demo] draft press release about descoping OSGeo-Live

2017-04-14 Thread Astrid Emde (OSGeo)

Hello,

Do OpenHub metrics reflect an active and healthy community:
https://live.osgeo.org/en/metrics.html

Maybe we should inform the projects if their OpenHub metrics shows low
activity. We had it with Mapbender a while ago too. OpenHub did not make
get the statistics although there was activity in the project. We had to
contact the OpenHub team and they fixed it.

Looks like in Leaflet project it is similar. Activity is not available
says OpenHub but on github are regular commits.

Thanks Vicky, Micha, Pirmin,

This is really good feedback.

I've introduction text to:

"For our next OSGeo-Live release, 11.0, we propose to reduce the

(32 bit will be built but not tested or officially supported)."

Regarding OpenHub metrics, I'm very aware that it has many
imperfections. However, as far as I'm aware, it is the best available,
and hence we reference it from OSGeo-Live.

While projects should rightly be concerned if OSGeo-Live only uses
OpenHub metrics to assess project health, they should be significantly
more concerned about the general public's assessment of their project.

I think it should be a priority of all projects to try an ensure their
OpenHub metrics reflect the true health of their project as new users
can, do, and should make use such metrics as part of their due
diligence of project selection.

Warm regard, Cameron

Review comments are welcome

For non-native speakers like me, an earlier hint what the euphemism
"descoping" is standing for, would be very helpful.

 Two comments:

Even with English as my mother tongue, I had to think twice about what
phrase referred to. Why not just say outright: "removing some
projects".

Regarding the list of considerations to assess projects, we need to
keep in mind that some projects, spatialite for example, use version
control systems that are not "Openhub-friendly". So they are sorely
under-represented on Openhub.

Best,
Micha

[Live-demo] Feedback from FOSSGIS 2017 & OSGeoL-Live

2017-03-27 Thread Astrid Emde (OSGeo)

Hello OSGeo-Live team,

we had FOSSGIS 2017 in Passau last week & it was a great event.

** Youtube at: https://www.youtube.com/user/fossgis
* soon at TIB AV-Portal for eternity:
https://av.tib.eu/search?f=publisher%3Bhttp://av.tib.eu/resource/FOSSGIS_e.V.&o=0

Workshops with OSGeo-Live

We ran 16 workshops with 152 participants. OSGeo-Live 10.0 ran in a
virtual machine with QUEMO. Worked fine!

https://www.fossgis.de/wiki/Datei:Fossgis2017_wprkshop_osgeolive.jpg
Some workshop leader used the Desktop Icon to provide material:
https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/wiki/Live_GIS_Workshop_Install

Feedback
* 1. you saw the mail from Primin about a better editor: "Replace Eric
with Atom Editor"
https://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/live-demo/2017-March/011979.html

* 2. Add an Overview and Quickstart for GeoPython packages. Many python
packages are installed on OSGeoLive, but there is no tutorial or
overview. Christian Strobl made a great workshop. He would help to make
an overview and quickstart document.

* add additional Python Package python-skimage ->
http://scikit-image.org/

We will ask the workshop leader for more feedback and let you know.

OSGeo-Live 10.5 beta1 is ready for download at [1]. We're looking for
testing applications and updating docs and translations.

In particular, we need help to:
* Check if any new features need to be added to Project Overviews
* Run Quickstarts and verify they work as described. Please join us on
irc://freenode.net#osgeolive in the upcoming days during our testing
sprint.
* Update review status in our spreadsheet [2]. (It really helps us know
if an application has been reviewed, and by who).

* Translate docs that have been updated.

OSGeo-Live is scheduled to be the default installation at 10+ of the
FOSSGIS workshops, and used at FOSS4G Europe [3] in Paris in july . We
strongly urge all workshop leaders to test OSGeo-Live now and provide
feedback, while there is still time to tweak anything required for the
workshop.
