Re: [Ltsp-discuss] Via Unichrome Pro II Xorg driver for ltsp 4.2

2008-09-09 Thread Ondrej Valousek
Fortunately, Via released a binary driver for all Unichrome II boards
(see the Via Linux portal) for Ubuntu Hardy.
This one works fine but still is not as stable as the vesa driver.
Generally speaking, there is no stable/perfect driver for the recent Via
chipsets - the your luck with the one I have mentioned - it is the best
I have seen so far.

Hopefully this situation will change when Via fully releases the specs
for their hardware to the opensource community.

No, sorry. Never did anything like this.
So, if I were in your stead I would see two alternatives:
 - use the vesa driver
 - switch to LTSP-5 :-)

Yes, the vesa driver works to a degree. Just as it says Slow, not
taking advantage of any memory on the chip.
Yes if it was just me I would see how newest Ubuntu with LTSP 5 runs it
but I am constrained by needed to stay with 4.2 for now.
 Thanks

I'm interested to know how to do this in general, because I'd like to
get some of the newer amd-geode drivers working in LTSP 4.2 -- please
post any successes you have!

For the VIA PCI-Ids see http://pci-ids.ucw.cz/iii/?i=1106 or just run
lspci -n on client (on the shell SCREEN).

For the driver I would guess it's via. Indeed I found an example
Xorg config on http://en.linuxreviews.org/VIA_Unichrome_Pro_II , but I
don't know if the via driver of LTSP-4.2 (Xorg-6.9) already supports
this video adapter.

So let's say lspci -n gives you
.: 1106: (rev ..)
for the video adapter just give it a try and add
1106: via# Via Unichrome Pro II
to the vidlist. With this pci_scan will know your video and Xorg will
use the via driver for it and you'll see if it works.

Thanks Horst,
That helps with updating the vidlist with knowledge of the device. But
the via driver still doesn't work for this device at that version. And
that is the bigger problem. I had already manually configured the via as
the xserver in lts.conf and found that via didn't work for this device.
I have looked around at the various groups that have been working on
drivers for this card and have tried one of them which also didn't
work. There have been quite a few structure changes to Xorg since this
4.2 ltsp and I was hoping that some one had a newer driver (binary)
available compatible with this ltsp version. Any idea about where to
find a newer via binary that might work with ltsp 4.2. I don't think
that it would be easy to try to take a driver for the newer Xorg
structure and backport it what was used for the 4.2 ltsp. Any thoughts
on that?
Thanks again
Tim
